Here is the single most important logistical fact for every UCLA parent: your student’s university is in Los Angeles, and Los Angeles traffic is not a metaphor.

UCLA operates on the quarter system, which means fall move-in happens in mid-to-late September, later than most universities. That sounds like a bonus (more summer!), and in many ways it is. But when your family loads a minivan or books flights for move-in weekend, you are not arriving in a sleepy late-August city. You are arriving in a fully operational American megacity during one of its warmer months, alongside tens of thousands of other families heading to the same hill at approximately the same time.

UCLA runs a structured, staggered move-in process with assigned time windows and specific parking instructions. Following those instructions is not optional. Families who improvise their arrival or try to circle the campus on Gayley Avenue without a plan will spend much of move-in day sitting in traffic, which is a rough way to say goodbye to your student.

Hotels in Westwood and the immediate area run $250 to $400 per night during peak family weekends. Budget options require a drive to Culver City, Burbank, or further east. Book early.

That is the 8 Clap, one of the most recognizable cheer traditions in college sports, and it is the kind of thing your student will remember for the rest of their life.

UCLA’s mascots are Joe Bruin and Josephine Bruin, and the connection runs deeper than most school spirit traditions. The Bruin identity is tied to a genuine sense of public mission. UCLA is the most applied-to university in the United States, year after year. Getting in means something. Being a Bruin means something.

On the field, UCLA’s move to the Big Ten in 2024 created new rivalries and new road trips for families who want to follow the team. LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) is approximately 7 miles from campus. That number is misleading. Depending on the time of day, the drive takes between 30 minutes and 90 minutes. Rideshare services are the most practical option for families without rental cars. The Flyaway Bus is a cheaper alternative: it runs directly from LAX to Westwood and costs a fraction of a rideshare, making it worth knowing about if you are traveling without much luggage.

Return it to LAX rather than parking it in Westwood, where garage rates run $30 to $50 per night. Hedrick Hall and Hedrick Summit sit at the north end of the Hill. Hedrick Summit is a newer, suite-style facility. The Covel Dining Commons is adjacent to this complex and is consistently rated among the best dining options on the Hill.

De Neve Plaza and De Neve Commons form a central residential area anchored by Bruin Plate, one of the most decorated college dining halls in the country. Bruin Plate has won national recognition for its health-focused menu, fresh ingredients, and variety. If your student ends up in De Neve housing, their proximity to Bruin Plate is genuinely good news.

Smaller residential communities including Delta Terrace, Holly Field, and Gardenia Terrace often house students in living-learning communities organized around specific academic or thematic interests.

Santa Monica is approximately five miles west of campus. Plan half a day there on any visit. Third Street Promenade is a pedestrian mall with shops and restaurants. The Santa Monica Pier is the iconic end-of-Route-66 landmark. The restaurants along Main Street in Santa Monica are some of the best casual dining in Los Angeles. If the weather is good (it usually is), walk to the beach.

Venice Beach is seven miles from campus. Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice is one of the most interesting commercial streets in Southern California: independent boutiques, coffee roasters, excellent restaurants, and a distinctly local LA energy that has nothing to do with Hollywood.

Beverly Hills is three miles east of campus. Rodeo Drive is what you expect. The Erewhon on Beverly Drive is expensive and worth at least one visit as a genuine piece of contemporary Los Angeles culture.

The Getty Center is approximately two miles from campus, up the hill on the 405 side. It is one of the great art museums in the United States, admission is free, and the views of Los Angeles from the Richard Meier building are genuinely breathtaking. Plan two to three hours. Do not skip it.

On food: In-N-Out Burger is the Southern California institution, and there is a location near campus. Wally’s in Westwood is an upscale wine bar that works well for a parent-student dinner when you want something nicer than Diddy Riese.

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is on campus. It is consistently ranked among the top five hospitals in the United States.
