About UniversityParent
We've Been Here Before
UniversityParent started in 2003 as a single printed guide for parents of University of Colorado Boulder students.
The idea was simple: parents of college students needed better information, and no one was providing it. They had questions about move-in logistics, local resources, how to talk to their students about money and mental health, how to stay connected without hovering, and how to actually support the kind of independence they'd spent 18 years trying to build. Most of what existed was either written for students or too generic to be genuinely useful.
So we built something specific. A guide for CU Boulder parents, written with the depth and care that "your student's school" actually deserves.
It worked from the first edition. Parents used it. Universities noticed. And what started as a single campus guide grew into something much larger.

What We Built
Over the next two decades, UniversityParent expanded from one school to more than 3,000.
At our peak, we partnered with over 100 colleges and universities to provide school-specific parent resources, customized guides, newsletters, websites, and handbooks distributed at orientations, parent weekends, and move-in events across the country. We reached more than 10 million parents annually with guides, articles, community features, and the kind of practical, honest content that parents told us they couldn't find anywhere else.
Along the way, we were recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of America's 30 Under 30 Entrepreneurs, by BusinessWeek as a Top 25 Entrepreneur Under 25, by the Gates Foundation as a "Player to Watch" in post-secondary education, and by the Denver Business Journal as a Top Woman Under 40. We were bootstrapped, family-friendly, and built entirely around what parents actually needed, not what was easy to produce.
We were built by a parent, for parents. That has never changed.
We Sold. Now We're Back.
A few years ago, we sold UniversityParent. It was the right decision at the time. But the need that created this company in 2003 hasn't gone away, if anything, it's grown.
Parents of college students are dealing with more complexity than ever: mental health challenges that have intensified since 2020, college costs that continue to outpace inflation, a technology environment that has transformed how students learn and socialize, and an admissions and job market that feels increasingly opaque.
The same instinct that created UniversityParent in 2003, parents need better, more specific, more honest support, is what brought us back.
We've rebuilt UniversityParent from the ground up for 2026: new tools, deeper school-specific guides, and a new College Match Intelligence Tool that pairs data from thousands of universities with your student's individual profile to help you think through one of the most significant decisions a family makes.
The mission is the same. The platform is new. The expertise is 20+ years in the making.
What We Believe
Specificity beats generality. A guide that tells you exactly what to expect at your student's specific university, the dorm rules, the local resources, what mental health support looks like there, the football weekend hotel situation, is worth ten generic articles about "college life."
Parents and students both need support. The college transition is hard on families, not just students. We write for parents who are doing the emotionally complex work of supporting independence while staying connected.
Data should inform decisions, not replace them. Our tools use real data from government sources, university records, and outcome research. But data is context, not verdict. Your family's specific circumstances matter more than any ranking.
Trust is built slowly and lost quickly. We earn your trust by being accurate, disclosing our affiliates transparently, and recommending only what we'd recommend to a family member.
Our Editorial Standards
Every guide, article, and resource on UniversityParent is:
Researched. We verify tuition, dorm policies, move-in dates, and local information against official university sources. We update time-sensitive content annually.
Honest. We don't write "best of" lists based on who pays us. Our affiliate partners are disclosed clearly and our editorial recommendations are independent of those relationships.
Parent-tested. Our content is shaped by the questions and experiences of real families. When we get something wrong, parents tell us, and we fix it.
Current. College policies, costs, and resources change. We publish update dates on every guide and review high-traffic content annually.
