Amherst College was founded in 1821 in the town of Amherst, Massachusetts, in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, with a mission to provide a liberal arts education to students of limited means, particularly those preparing for the Christian ministry.
In the 200 years since, Amherst has become one of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the United States (with admission rates consistently among the three or four lowest of any liberal arts college nationally), has dropped its founding religious purpose while retaining its commitment to broad access through financial aid, and has developed a distinctive academic culture built around two core institutional commitments: open curriculum (no required courses, following the Brown and Hampshire models) and extraordinary financial aid generosity.
Amherst has no required courses of any kind. Like Brown, Amherst believes that students should design their own intellectual paths rather than satisfy an institutional distribution mandate. The Amherst open curriculum is even more radical than Brown’s in one sense: Amherst does not have distribution requirements of any kind, not even the informal breadth encouragements that some open curriculum schools maintain. Students take 32 courses to graduate, choose a major or double major (or a special interdisciplinary major), and construct the remainder of their program entirely from their own intellectual interests and advising conversations. This is genuine freedom, and it requires genuine self-direction.
Amherst is a member of the Five College Consortium, along with Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Five College membership means that Amherst students can take courses at any of the four other institutions for credit, travel among the campuses on a free shared bus system, and access the combined library resources, extracurricular organizations, and social communities of five distinct institutions with a combined enrollment of approximately 30,000 students. For a college with only 1,900 students, this consortium access is an extraordinary multiplier of academic and social options.

Amherst’s Academic Strengths
