Ball State University was founded in 1918 in Muncie, Indiana, as the Indiana State Normal School Eastern Division, and has developed over more than a century into a comprehensive regional university of approximately 20,000 students with a strong emphasis on experiential learning, professional preparation, and the distinctive academic programs that have built Ball State’s national reputation.

The Ball State journalism program (housed in the College of Communication, Information, and Media) is consistently ranked among the top journalism programs in the midwest and in the country, with strong tracks in print journalism, broadcast journalism, photojournalism, and public relations. The student-operated WCRD radio station, the Ball State Daily News, and the immersive journalism program reflect the college’s investment in hands-on professional preparation from the first year.

The College of Architecture and Planning is the other Ball State academic program with national distinction, with architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture programs that regularly appear in top-25 rankings for undergraduate architecture education. The program’s emphasis on sustainability, environmental responsibility, and the integrative relationship between design and community has given Ball State’s architecture graduates a distinctive professional profile.

Muncie is a small city of approximately 65,000 people in Delaware County, east-central Indiana, approximately 55 miles northeast of Indianapolis via I-69. Muncie is the original site of the sociological studies conducted by Robert and Helen Lynd (published as Middletown in 1929 and Middletown in Transition in 1937), which made Muncie the most studied American city in the sociological literature and established the “Middletown” name that has become synonymous with mainstream American community life.

A Note on Cardinals Identity and Financial Aid

Ball State’s athletic teams are the Cardinals, competing in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) at the Division I level. The colors are cardinal red and white.

The Cardinals compete in the full range of MAC sports, with football at Scheumann Stadium, and the MAC’s fall football season with regional competition against Toledo, Western Michigan, Miami (OH), and other MAC programs anchors the fall athletics calendar.

Financial aid at Ball State is primarily need-based and merit-based through federal, Indiana state, and institutional programs. Indiana residents should verify eligibility for the Frank O’Bannon Grant and the 21st Century Scholars program. Contact bsu.edu/financial-aid for current aid and scholarship programs.

Getting to Muncie

Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is approximately 65 miles southwest of Muncie via I-69 and I-465, served by American, Delta, United, Southwest, and other carriers from comprehensive national markets. IND is the primary gateway for Ball State families, and the airport’s comprehensive domestic service makes it accessible from virtually any US market.

For families driving, I-69 is the primary north-south connection to Muncie from Indianapolis. US-35 and IN-28 provide additional access routes from the north and east. The approach to Muncie from Indianapolis on I-69 through the Indiana farmland is the typical family approach.

What do parents need to know about Ball State University move-in day 2026?

Ball State’s fall move-in runs in late August, with specific dates and arrival windows per residence hall. Check bsu.edu/housing for your student’s building and move-in window.

Muncie in late August is warm and humid in the Indiana late-summer way: temperatures in the upper 80s, the Indiana corn and soybean fields surrounding the city at their tallest, and the campus at its most densely green.

Ball State runs organized move-in with residential life staff and building-specific unloading areas. The campus’s scale (Ball State’s campus is approximately 1,140 acres) means that the distance between buildings and parking areas can be significant.

Practical notes:

  • Ship boxes ahead. Ball State holds packages.
  • After unloading, the Muncie restaurant scene on McGalliard Road and the Muncie downtown provides family dining options.

The Residence Halls: Where Your Student Might Live

Ball State’s residential system provides on-campus housing for approximately 5,500 students, with freshmen required to live on campus.

DeHority Complex, LaFollette Complex, and Noyer Complex are the primary freshman residential communities, each a cluster of interconnected residence halls with their own dining facilities and community spaces. The complex system creates manageable freshman community clusters within the larger university.

The Village and Elliott/Shively Halls provide upperclass housing options with different configurations and dining access.

The Rinard Orchid Greenhouse, the Living Learning Communities, and themed residential options reflect Ball State’s investment in connecting residential and academic communities.

Muncie and East-Central Indiana: What Parents Need to Know

Muncie’s identity as Robert Lynd’s “Middletown” gives it a sociological and cultural significance beyond its size, and the city has been working to build on its university connection and its Middletown Research Center resources to create a more vibrant post-industrial cultural life.

The Muncie Children’s Museum and the Minnetrista Museum and Gardens (a cultural institution preserving the history and legacy of the Ball Corporation, the original local fruit jar manufacturer whose philanthropy established Ball State) provide the primary Muncie cultural destinations for parent visit.

Indianapolis is 65 miles southwest, with the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (the largest children’s museum in the world), the Indianapolis Museum of Art (Newfields, a combined art museum and 152-acre garden complex), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hall of Fame Museum, and the full range of metropolitan dining and cultural resources that Indiana’s capital city provides.

For parent visit dining: The Yum Cup (downtown Muncie, frozen custard and casual food, a Muncie institution), Vera Mae’s Bistro (downtown Muncie, farm-to-table, the most upscale local option), and Indianapolis for a day trip with more restaurant variety.

When is Ball State University Family Weekend 2026 and how do parents plan for it?

Family Weekend 2026

Ball State University Family Weekend 2026 is September 10 to 13, 2026.

Confirm the schedule and registration on the official family weekend page. Hotels near campus sell out early, so book as soon as dates are confirmed.

Tuition Refund if Withdrawing

Ball State University refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.

The refund is based on the date a student contacts Cardinal Central to initiate withdrawal, not when the paperwork is finished, and is calculated on total fees charged rather than the amount actually paid. Ball State explicitly notes its own refund math is a separate calculation from the federal Title IV aid clawback, a family can see two different percentages apply at once. Students must vacate residence halls within 48 hours of withdrawing.

Refund schedule: for a standard 15 or 16 week term: 100% week 1, 80% week 2, 60% week 3, 50% week 4, 40% week 5, 30% week 6, 20% week 7, 10% week 8, 0% from week 9 onward. Shorter terms use their own compressed version of the same pattern. Confirmed via the official Ball State University refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.

Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.

Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.

GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.

Freshman Car & Parking

Freshmen may bring a car to Ball State, but register last, after every other class year.

Permit sales open in class-year order: residence hall students overall start July 1, but within that, seniors go first (July 7), then juniors, sophomores, returning freshmen, and finally first-year freshmen last (July 28, 2026). Space in any given lot is first-come, first-served once a class year’s window opens.

Freshman permit cost: $222/year for a residence-hall surface lot ($100 registration + $61/semester), or $346/year for a spot in the New York Parking Garage ($100 + $123/semester). Confirmed via the official Ball State parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.

Ball State’s Homecoming and the MAC football and basketball schedules provide the primary athletics events for families. Check bsu.edu/studentlife for current Family Weekend and Homecoming dates.

Hotel strategy: Muncie has adequate hotel inventory along McGalliard Road near the university. Book major Homecoming and football weekends 4 to 6 weeks ahead.

How can parents support their Ball State University student’s mental health?

Ball State’s Counseling Center provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and psychiatric referrals. The Indiana winter (cold, gray, and with limited daylight from November through February) is a mental health factor.

The commuter-heavy culture at Ball State (a significant proportion of students commute or live off-campus after the freshman year) can create social connection challenges for residential students who find the campus less socially concentrated than at more residential institutions.

What is Ball State University’s graduation rate?

Ball State University graduates 49.5% of students in four years; another 12.8 points finish within six. About 77.7% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.

Four-year graduation49.5%

about even with national

Six-year graduation62.3%

about even with national

First-year retention77.7%

3.3 pts below national

Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
