Bethune-Cookman University was founded in 1904 by Mary McLeod Bethune, who established the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls with $1.50, faith, and five students in a rented house in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The institution Bethune built from that single rented room grew through her leadership into the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute, merged with Cookman Institute in 1923 to form Bethune-Cookman College, and eventually became Bethune-Cookman University.

Bethune was the most influential Black woman in the United States government in the first half of the 20th century: she was a close advisor and friend of Eleanor Roosevelt, served as Director of Negro Affairs in the National Youth Administration under President Franklin D.
