What is the one thing every Colby College parent needs to know before move-in?

Colby College was founded in 1813 in Waterville, Maine, as the Maine Literary and Theological Institution, taking its current name from Gardner Colby (a Boston merchant and philanthropist) in 1867 after a significant endowment gift.

The campus relocated from downtown Waterville to its current hilltop location on Mayflower Hill in 1952, and the Mayflower Hill campus, with its Georgian-brick buildings and its views across the Kennebec River valley to the hills of central Maine, is one of the most coherent and visually pleasing liberal arts college campuses in New England.

In the past decade, Colby has undergone one of the most significant periods of physical investment in its history. The Davis Science Center (a state-of-the-art research facility opened in 2022), the Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts, the Colby Athletics and Recreation Center (ARC), and the transformative investment in the Colby Museum of Art have produced a physical campus that is substantially more sophisticated and well-equipped than it was a decade ago. The investment reflects both the generosity of the Colby donor community and the college’s ambition to compete at the highest level of liberal arts college education.

The Colby Museum of Art is one of the most significant art museum collections at any liberal arts college in the United States, with a permanent collection that has grown significantly through major gifts in recent years and now includes works by Alex Katz (the largest public collection of Katz’s work in the world), Clarice Smith American art holdings, the John Marin Center, and contemporary works that have transformed the museum into a destination of national significance in the art world. The museum is free and open to the public, and its collection is a genuine cultural asset for the central Maine region.

Colby is a member of NESCAC and is also affiliated with the Twelve College Exchange, providing cross-registration access to Amherst, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Hamilton, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Trinity, Vassar, Wheaton, Wellesley, and Williams.

A Note on Mules Identity and Financial Aid

Colby’s athletic teams are the White Mules (or simply Mules), competing in NESCAC at the Division III level. The colors are blue and gray. The Mule identity is one of the more distinctive in liberal arts college athletics and has been embraced by Colby’s athletics culture.

Colby competes in the full NESCAC sports calendar, with particular strength in skiing (the Maine winter and Sugarloaf Mountain’s proximity provide a skiing culture at Colby that is among the most developed in New England liberal arts athletics), hockey, lacrosse, and rowing.

Colby’s financial aid program meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted domestic students, without loans. The CSS Profile is required in addition to the FAFSA.

Getting to Waterville

Bangor International Airport (BGR) is approximately 60 miles northeast of Waterville via I-95, served by American and Delta from major northeastern hub markets. BGR is the closer airport for families approaching from the north.

Portland International Jetport (PWM) is approximately 80 miles south of Waterville via I-95, served by American, Delta, United, and Southwest. PWM has broader domestic connectivity and is the preferred gateway for most Colby families, including those arriving from western US and international markets via connecting hubs.

Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is approximately 3 hours south of Waterville via I-95 and the Maine Turnpike, and the Concord Coach Lines bus provides service between Boston and Waterville for students and families who prefer the transit option.

For families driving, I-95 (the Maine Turnpike north of Portland, becoming I-95 into Waterville) is the primary approach corridor. The Maine Turnpike exits at Waterville provide a straightforward approach to the Mayflower Hill campus.

What do parents need to know about Colby College move-in day 2026?

Colby’s fall move-in runs in late August, with specific dates and arrival windows per residence hall. Check colby.edu/campus-life/residential-life for your student’s building and move-in window.

Waterville in late August is warm in the central Maine way: temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s, less humid than the coast, and the Kennebec River Valley visible in the distance from Mayflower Hill in the clarity of late summer.

Colby runs organized move-in with orientation volunteer crews and building-specific unloading areas. The hilltop campus has designated roads for move-in traffic.

Practical notes:

  • Mayflower Hill’s elevation and the campus road system require following housing instructions for unloading logistics.
  • Ship boxes ahead. Colby holds packages.
  • After unloading, the Colby dining halls are the most practical first-night option. Waterville’s downtown has undergone significant revitalization effort (Colby’s investment in downtown Waterville is ongoing) and offers dining options at the Hathaway Creative Center and the restaurants along Main Street.

The Residence Halls: Where Your Student Might Live

Colby’s residential system houses all students on campus through a four-year residency requirement, with residence halls distributed across the Mayflower Hill campus.

East Quad houses the majority of first-year students, a cluster of residence halls on the east side of the campus that places freshmen in a concentrated community with proximity to the Roberts Union and the main campus facilities.

North End (Averill, Foss, Perkins, Small) and South End (Johnson, Goddard-Hodgkins, Mary Low) provide traditional-style dormitory options for upperclassmen and some freshmen, with double-room and community bathroom configurations characteristic of the Maine liberal arts college residential tradition.

Heights dormitories on the north campus provide more modern residential options with views across the Kennebec Valley.

The Colby dining program operates through Roberts and Foss dining facilities and has a strong reputation for quality and local Maine sourcing that is consistent with the college’s commitment to sustainability. Dining at Colby reflects the Maine agricultural and seafood economy in meaningful ways: the dining team sources locally where possible, and the quality of the food is consistently noted by students and family visitors.

Waterville and Central Maine: What Parents Need to Know

Waterville is a small city of approximately 16,000 people on the west bank of the Kennebec River in central Maine, with a historic downtown that Colby has actively invested in revitalizing through the Colby initiative to establish Waterville as a destination for arts, culture, and entrepreneurship in the Maine interior.

The Colby Museum of Art is the essential parent visit experience on campus: the Alex Katz Wing alone, which houses the largest public collection of Katz’s work in the world and was specifically designed to display it, justifies a substantial afternoon of time. The museum’s contemporary collection, the American art holdings, and the special exhibitions that cycle through the galleries throughout the academic year make the Colby Museum one of the most rewarding single art museum destinations at any liberal arts college in New England. Free admission.

Downtown Waterville on Main Street has seen significant investment and change in recent years, with the Maine Film Center (founded with Colby support), the new restaurants and galleries at the Hathaway Creative Center (a renovated mill building), and the arts programming that reflects Colby’s effort to create an arts-centered town-gown relationship.

Sugarloaf Mountain, 45 miles north via US-201, is one of the premier ski destinations in the northeastern United States, with over 1,200 skiable acres and among the most reliable snowfall in New England. Colby’s skiing culture reflects the proximity to Sugarloaf: the college’s ski teams train and compete there, and the student culture around skiing is more developed than at most NESCAC peers. Parents who are visiting in the January through March window should strongly consider a Sugarloaf day.

Acadia National Park is approximately 90 miles east of Waterville via I-95 and ME-3, on Mount Desert Island and the Maine coast near Bar Harbor. Acadia, with Cadillac Mountain (the first place in the United States where the sun rises in the fall and winter), the carriage roads designed by John D. Rockefeller Jr., and the dramatic Rocky Maine coast of Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole, is the most significant national park in the northeastern United States and a relatively accessible day trip or weekend destination from Waterville.

Portland is 80 miles south via I-95, with the full range of Maine’s best dining, the Portland Museum of Art, the Old Port waterfront district, and the restaurant scene anchored by Eventide Oyster Co. and Duckfat that draws visitors from Boston.

For parent visit dining: The Colby dining halls (worth visiting for the dining program quality), the Hathaway Creative Center restaurants in Waterville, and the drive to Portland for a dinner at Eventide (Portland, James Beard recognized, oysters and brown butter lobster roll) if time permits.

Jan Plan: Colby’s Distinctive January Term

Colby’s academic calendar includes a January Term (Jan Plan), a four-week intensive period in January between the fall and spring semesters that allows students to pursue a single focused course, project, internship, or independent study during the deepest part of the Maine winter.

Jan Plan is one of the defining features of the Colby calendar and a significant differentiator from NESCAC peers who operate on a standard fall-spring semester calendar.

Jan Plan courses include traditional classroom seminars, off-campus travel courses that take students to locations relevant to their academic focus, independent research projects supervised by faculty, and internship experiences in Maine and beyond. Students can also pursue independent study proposals approved by faculty, and upper-level students sometimes spend Jan Plan at off-campus locations relevant to their research or career interests.

For parents, Jan Plan is an important calendar feature: the fall semester ends in mid-December, and students return to campus in early January for Jan Plan before the spring semester begins in early February. The logistics of a January return to Waterville (which is firmly in winter by early January, with significant cold and snowfall) are a practical planning consideration for families.

When is Colby College Family Weekend 2026 and how do parents plan for it?

Tuition Refund if Withdrawing

Colby College refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.

Colby does not refund institutional charges for a full-time student who withdraws during its January Program (Jan Plan) term. Colby also partners with GradGuard to offer optional tuition refund insurance specifically to cushion a medical withdrawal, and refunds are issued within 45 days of an official withdrawal.

Refund schedule: tuition, housing, food, and the general fee are prorated on a straight weekly basis, roughly 1/15 of semester charges per week over Colby’s 15-week semester, decreasing to $0 once all 15 weeks have elapsed. Withdrawing before the semester starts gets a full refund minus any non-refundable enrollment fee. This source page returned an access error during research and should be spot-checked directly before being treated as fully confirmed. Confirmed via the official Colby College refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.

Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.

Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.

GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.

Freshman Car & Parking

Freshmen may register a car at Colby, but lot access goes by seniority, with first-years choosing last.

Because lot selection is strictly ranked by class year, a first-year student can legally bring a car but may not get a convenient, or any, on-campus spot depending on how much space remains after upperclassmen select first. Worth confirming directly with Colby Security before relying on this.

Freshman permit cost: not found; the official parking pages blocked automated access, so this could not be independently confirmed. Confirmed via the official Colby parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.

Colby’s Family Weekend is in the fall; check colby.edu/campus-life for current year dates. The NESCAC athletics schedule provides the fall sports draw, and the Colby campus in October, with the central Maine hills in fall color and the Kennebec Valley visible from Mayflower Hill, provides a beautiful parent visit context.

The Colby Museum of Art is worth building significant time around during any parent visit, and the museum’s programming calendar often includes special events during Family Weekend.

Hotel strategy: Waterville has moderate hotel inventory by the standards of a central Maine city of its size. The Waterville hotels along Kennedy Memorial Drive near the I-95 exit and the downtown options on Main Street provide the primary accommodation options. Portland hotels (80 miles south) provide the broadest backup inventory. Book Family Weekend 4 to 6 weeks ahead.

How can parents support their Colby College student’s mental health?

Colby’s Counseling Services provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and psychiatric referrals.

The Maine winter is one of the most significant mental health factors for Colby students: Waterville in January and February is genuinely cold (average high temperatures in the upper teens to low 20s Fahrenheit), with significant snowfall, short days (sunrise around 7:15 AM, sunset around 4:15 PM at the winter solstice), and the geographic isolation of a small city in central Maine. The combination is a genuine seasonal adjustment challenge, particularly for students from warmer or sunnier climates.

Jan Plan’s concentrated single-course format can also create mental health dynamics that are different from the multi-course academic schedule: students who are not thriving in their Jan Plan course or project can feel isolated in a way that the fuller academic schedule distributes across multiple contexts.

Colby’s Academic Strengths

Colby operates on a distribution requirement system that ensures breadth across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, alongside requirements in quantitative reasoning, diversity, and writing.

The distribution requirements are designed to ensure that students engage across the full range of liberal arts disciplines, and the Jan Plan adds a concentrated intensive learning dimension that is genuinely distinctive in the NESCAC context.

The natural sciences at Colby are among the strongest at any liberal arts college in the country, with the Davis Science Center’s research facilities providing exceptional access to undergraduate research in biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science. The biology department’s strength is reflected in Colby’s strong medical school placement record, and the environmental studies program is one of the most developed in NESCAC, reflecting both faculty investment and the Maine ecological context.

The Colby Arts enterprise (the name for the institutional initiative that encompasses the museum, the creative and performing arts center, and the downtown cultural investment) represents one of the most ambitious arts integration programs at any liberal arts college. The museum’s Alex Katz collection and the supporting gallery and performance spaces have attracted artists, curators, and cultural figures to Waterville in ways that are directly beneficial to the academic programs in art history, studio art, and creative writing.

The economics, government, and global studies programs are among the most active at Colby, with strong faculty and a student population that is engaged in public affairs and global issues in ways that reflect the college’s long-standing commitment to civic education. The DavisConnects program, which connects students with off-campus opportunities for internships, research, and public engagement funded by the Davis family endowment, extends the Colby academic experience beyond Mayflower Hill in ways that are accessible to all students regardless of financial background.

The writing program is embedded across the curriculum, and Colby’s graduates in journalism, law, and the policy world consistently describe their writing development as a central feature of the Colby education. The creative writing faculty and the reading series they maintain bring writers to campus throughout the academic year.

Getting Your Student’s Stuff Home Between Semesters

Colby’s Maine winter makes end-of-semester December travel planning important, and the January return for Jan Plan requires a second logistical sequence just weeks after December departure. BGR and PWM airports and I-95 are the primary options. Storage Scholars specializes in student storage with residence hall pickup and delivery.

You Are a Colby Mules Family Now

Mayflower Hill in October when the Maine hills are at peak color and the Kennebec River Valley is visible through the trees. The Alex Katz Wing on a quiet Sunday when the large-format canvases fill the room and the Maine light comes through the windows.

The first Sugarloaf powder day in January when the campus buses head north at 7 AM. The dining hall in February when the snow is piled to the first-floor windows and nobody has left campus in 48 hours.

Colby has been educating students in Waterville for more than two centuries, and the college’s decision to invest in both the physical campus and the surrounding community in the past decade reflects a conviction that the relationship between a liberal arts college and its place is not incidental but essential. The museum, the downtown, the Davis Science Center, and the Jan Plan calendar are all expressions of what Colby believes education in a specific place, pursued with specific intensity, can produce.

What is Colby College’s graduation rate?

Colby College graduates 75.3% of students in four years; another 13.5 points finish within six. About 93.7% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.

Four-year graduation75.3%

26.3 pts above national

Six-year graduation88.8%

24.8 pts above national

First-year retention93.7%

12.7 pts above national

Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
