The 12-Team Playoff, and Why It Matters to Parents

How to Plan Ahead as a Parent
The hard part of a bowl trip is that you cannot book it early with certainty. Matchups are not set until early December, and Playoff seeding not until Selection Day. But you can do the groundwork now so that when the bracket drops, you move in hours rather than days.
- Watch conference championship weekend. That early-December weekend decides most bowl bids and the entire Playoff field. The Sunday after is when you will know your student’s destination and date.
- Hold flexible travel. Because you will not know the city until early December and prices spike over the holidays, a changeable fare is worth the premium. This is exactly the case where families lean on Southwest, since rebooking when plans firm up does not trigger a change fee.
