East Carolina University was founded in 1907 in Greenville, North Carolina, as the East Carolina Teachers Training School, established to serve the educational needs of eastern North Carolina, a region that has historically been among the most economically underserved parts of one of the most economically diverse states in the American Southeast.
In the 119 years since, ECU has grown into a comprehensive research university of approximately 28,000 students and has added the Brody School of Medicine, which is the only medical school in eastern North Carolina and serves as the primary healthcare provider and physician trainer for a region of more than 1.4 million people who would otherwise have limited access to medical education and specialty healthcare.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is approximately 90 miles west of Greenville via US-264 and I-40, served by American, Delta, United, Southwest, and other carriers from comprehensive national markets. Most ECU families from outside the southeastern United States use RDU and drive east.
For families driving, US-264 connects Greenville to Raleigh (90 miles west) and to the Outer Banks (75 miles east). US-13 and US-117 provide north-south connections.
