What is the one thing every Fisk University parent needs to know before move-in?
Fisk University was founded in 1866 in Nashville, Tennessee, by the American Missionary Association, established in the years immediately following the Civil War to provide education for the freedpeople of Tennessee and the broader Upper South.
In the 160 years since its founding, Fisk has produced some of the most significant figures in African American intellectual and cultural history: W.E.B. Du Bois received his bachelor’s degree from Fisk in 1888, John Lewis received his bachelor’s degree from Fisk, Ida B. Wells attended Fisk, Aaron Douglas (the defining visual artist of the Harlem Renaissance) studied and taught at Fisk, and the institution’s extraordinary alumni list reflects a role in Black intellectual life that is disproportionate to the university’s small size (approximately 900 students).
The Jubilee Singers are the founding story of Fisk’s institutional identity. In 1871, with the university in financial distress and the buildings in disrepair, Treasurer George L. White organized a group of eleven students to tour the country singing spirituals to raise money for the institution. The tour was initially dismissed by promoters who doubted that audiences would pay to hear formerly enslaved people sing the music of their bondage. The Jubilee Singers proved them wrong: over two years of touring the United States and Europe, they sang for President Ulysses Grant at the White House, for Queen Victoria at the Crystal Palace, and for audiences across the Atlantic world, raising $150,000, enough to build Jubilee Hall (1876), the first permanent building built for the higher education of Black Americans in the United States and a National Historic Landmark. The Jubilee Singers continue to perform today.
The Stieglitz Collection is Fisk’s most unusual institutional possession and one of the most remarkable small art collections in any American university. Alfred Stieglitz, the pioneering photographer and gallerist who was married to Georgia O’Keeffe, bequeathed his personal collection to Fisk in 1949, in part because of his friendship with Carl Van Vechten, a Fisk supporter, and because he wanted his collection to go to an institution that would treasure it rather than lose it among a larger holding. The Stieglitz Collection includes 101 works by Georgia O’Keeffe (O’Keeffe’s own selections from her work, arguably the most personally significant O’Keeffe collection anywhere), along with works by Picasso, Cezanne, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove, and other significant American and European modernists. The collection is housed in the Van Vechten Gallery on the Fisk campus.

A Note on Bulldogs Identity and Financial Aid
Fisk’s athletic teams are the Bulldogs, competing at the NAIA level. The colors are blue and gold. Fisk’s NAIA athletic program reflects the institution’s priorities: as a very small liberal arts HBCU, Fisk’s campus culture is organized around intellectual achievement, the arts, and the Jubilee Singers tradition rather than a major athletics program.

For families driving, I-40 connects Nashville to Memphis (210 miles west) and Knoxville (180 miles east). I-65 connects north to Louisville and south to Birmingham. The Fisk campus is in the North Nashville corridor, approximately 1.5 miles north of the Vanderbilt University campus and 5 miles from the Tennessee State University campus.

Fisk’s Academic Strengths
Fisk is a liberal arts HBCU, and its academic model is the most analogous in the HBCU landscape to the liberal arts colleges of the Northeast: small class sizes, close faculty-student relationships, a broad curricular foundation across the arts, sciences, and social sciences, and a post-graduate record that is disproportionate to the institution’s size.
