What is the one thing every Georgetown University parent needs to know before move-in?
Georgetown University move-in is New undergraduate arrival is Thursday and Friday, August 20 and 21, 2026, within a move-in weekend that runs through August 23.
Fall 2026 classes begin Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Classes begin Wednesday, August 26. Georgetown has a single-day mid-semester holiday October 12.
Verified against the official housing and academic calendar pages in July 2026. Move-in times are usually assigned individually, so confirm your student’s slot before booking travel.
Georgetown has no Metro stop. That sentence is doing a lot of work, so let’s stay with it for a moment.
Washington, DC has an excellent subway system. The Georgetown University campus is not on it. The neighborhood sits on a bluff above the Potomac River in northwest DC, and the nearest Metro station is Foggy Bottom/GWU, about a mile away on foot. A second option, Rosslyn, is just across the Key Bridge in Virginia. Students get between campus and the Metro by walking, by taking the Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle (known as GUTS), or by riding the DC Circulator bus, which runs a dedicated Georgetown route to and from Dupont Circle Metro.
If you are flying into Reagan National Airport and planning to take the Metro straight to your student’s dorm, you will need a new plan. There is no Metro line that deposits you on Prospect Street. A rideshare or taxi from Reagan will run 15 to 20 minutes and cost roughly what you’d expect for that distance in a major city. From Dulles, add another half hour. From BWI, add another 15 minutes beyond that.
This is not a complaint about Georgetown. The lack of a Metro stop is inseparable from what makes the Georgetown neighborhood special. The campus feels like a campus rather than an urban building cluster precisely because it is tucked into a residential neighborhood with real streets, real rowhouses, and a real history that predates the federal city itself. M Street, Wisconsin Avenue, the C&O Canal, the waterfront parks: these are genuinely beautiful, and the slight inconvenience of the transit situation is the price of admission for one of the most distinctive campus settings in American higher education.
But parents who arrive for Family Weekend expecting to hop on the Metro will spend 20 minutes on their phones figuring out the Circulator schedule. Better to know before you land.

Hoya Saxa: The Identity at the Center of Everything
Every school has a nickname. Not every school has a nickname that requires a brief linguistic archaeology tour to explain. Georgetown’s rallying cry, “Hoya Saxa,” is believed to derive from a mixed Greek and Latin phrase loosely translated as “what rocks.” “Saxa” means rocks in Latin.
“Hoya” is thought to come from the Greek “hoia,” a demonstrative pronoun. The full phrase became the team’s signature cheer, and from it came the name “Hoyas,” which Georgetown’s athletic teams have carried since the early twentieth century.
The mascot is Jack the Bulldog, which fits the tradition of sturdy, compact, tenacious bulldog mascots across college athletics. But Jack is merely the face. The soul of Georgetown athletic identity lives in basketball.
Georgetown basketball in the Big East is a storied program. Patrick Ewing played here. The program has produced NBA talent and Final Four appearances and decades of Big East drama. When basketball season opens in the fall, the campus gathers for Midnight Madness, a celebration of the first official practice of the year, and the atmosphere is legitimately electric. Capital One Arena (which longtime DC residents still sometimes call Verizon Center, or MCI Center before that) is accessible via Metro from Foggy Bottom and hosts the biggest Georgetown games. If you are visiting during basketball season, understanding what a Big East game means to a Georgetown student will help you understand why your student may have opinions about seating locations and pre-game timing.
The Jesuit Catholic tradition shapes Georgetown’s institutional culture in ways that go beyond the campus chapels. Values around service, intellectual rigor, and engagement with the world are genuinely embedded in the curriculum and campus life. Families from all religious backgrounds enroll at Georgetown, and the campus is explicitly welcoming of that diversity, but the Jesuit identity is not decorative. It shapes advising relationships, first-year seminars, service programming, and the ethical framework through which academic departments approach their work.
How do parents get to Georgetown University? Travel guide from If you are flying into Reagan National Airport
Dulles International (IAD) is roughly 45 minutes west in northern Virginia. It is well-served by the Metrorail Silver Line now, though getting from the Silver Line to Georgetown still requires the Foggy Bottom transfer and the final-mile connection. For a single traveler with carry-on luggage, the Silver Line is a reasonable option.
By air: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the closest airport to Georgetown and the one most families should target. It sits just across the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia, and a rideshare or taxi reaches campus in 15 to 20 minutes on a normal traffic day (DC traffic being what it is, budget 30 minutes to be safe). DCA is accessible by Metro (Blue and Yellow Lines), but you will still need a rideshare or bus for the final mile to campus.
For families hauling move-in cargo, a rideshare from Dulles directly to campus is the practical choice.
Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) is roughly 60 minutes north. It is connected to the Amtrak and MARC commuter rail system, which reaches Washington’s Union Station on the Metro Red Line. Union Station to Foggy Bottom is a straightforward Metro trip, but again: the Circulator or GUTS shuttle for the final connection to campus.
By train: Amtrak serves Washington’s Union Station, which is accessible via the Metro Red Line. Foggy Bottom/GWU is on the Blue and Orange Lines, not the Red Line, so you will transfer at Metro Center. From Foggy Bottom, the GUTS shuttle or DC Circulator completes the trip to campus.
By car: Families driving to Georgetown should be aware that parking in the neighborhood is limited and metered. The campus has limited visitor parking. For move-in and Family Weekend, Georgetown provides specific guidance and often shuttle coordination from off-site locations. Read the University’s posted instructions carefully before attempting to navigate there in a packed minivan.
GUTS and Circulator: The Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle (GUTS) runs routes to Dupont Circle Metro, Rosslyn Metro, and several other destinations on a schedule that shifts seasonally. The DC Circulator’s Georgetown-Dupont Circle route runs frequently during peak hours. Both are free or low-cost for Georgetown students and convenient for parents who are already on campus. Download the DC Circulator app before your first visit.
What do parents need to know about Georgetown University move-in day 2026?
Georgetown’s move-in typically occurs in late August. The University assigns specific move-in dates and time windows, and the system is tighter than it might seem from the outside. This is not a complaint about Georgetown’s logistics team.
What to Expect
Georgetown’s move-in typically occurs in late August. The University assigns specific move-in dates and time windows, and the system is tighter than it might seem from the outside. This is not a complaint about Georgetown’s logistics team. It is a description of reality: the campus sits in a dense residential neighborhood with narrow streets, real neighbors who live there year-round, and a geography that makes uncontrolled vehicle flow genuinely unworkable.
Follow your assigned move-in instructions precisely. Arrive during your assigned window, not before it. Georgetown will tell you where to go, where to park or unload, and how the cart system works. Trust those instructions. Improvising on move-in day in Georgetown neighborhood is a good way to spend an hour stuck on a one-way street.
The Weather Problem
August in Washington, DC is among the most uncomfortable move-in conditions of any university in the country. The city sits in a river basin, and August humidity regularly feels like wearing a warm, damp blanket while standing in front of a hair dryer. Temperatures routinely run into the upper 80s and low 90s with heat indices that push well beyond that.
Pack accordingly: light clothing, water bottles, small personal fans for the room, and realistic expectations about how many trips between the car and the dorm everyone will want to make. Wear shoes you can actually walk in, not sandals. Bring a change of clothes. The dining halls and residence hall lobbies are air-conditioned. The sidewalks between them are not.
What to Pack (and What to Leave Home)
Georgetown’s residence halls, particularly the freshman halls, are traditional dormitory-style rooms. Measure twice before buying a loft. Many freshmen halls have built-in furniture or specific layouts that affect what actually fits. Georgetown’s housing website posts room dimensions by hall, and those dimensions are worth consulting before your student orders a 10-drawer dresser.

Storage
Students who are flying in for move-in or who need to ship items in advance have real options. Storage Scholars offers storage and shipping coordination specifically for college students.
Hotels for Move-In
The Georgetown neighborhood has several hotels within walking distance of campus, but they are expensive and fill quickly around move-in dates. Book early or look for options in nearby Foggy Bottom, Dupont Circle, or across the river in Rosslyn and Arlington, Virginia.
Where do Georgetown University freshmen live? A guide to residence halls and dorms
The large majority of Georgetown freshmen live in one of two adjacent halls on the south end of campus: New South Hall and Harbin Hall. Together these buildings house most of the incoming first-year class, and they function as the social nucleus of freshman Georgetown.
The Freshman Experience
The large majority of Georgetown freshmen live in one of two adjacent halls on the south end of campus: New South Hall and Harbin Hall. Together these buildings house most of the incoming first-year class, and they function as the social nucleus of freshman Georgetown. If your student mentions “going to Leo’s” or “hanging out in New South,” this is the geography they mean.
New South Hall is a high-rise building by Georgetown standards, housing a substantial portion of incoming freshmen. It is where freshman Georgetown life happens most visibly. The rooms are traditional doubles. The density of first-year students in one building accelerates the community-formation process that makes or breaks a freshman year.
Harbin Hall is adjacent to New South and similarly oriented toward freshmen. Harbin residents and New South residents form one extended first-year community across both buildings. The distinction between the two, from the outside, is mostly architectural.
Darnall Hall is part of the Village A complex on the south end of campus and houses a mix of freshmen and upperclassmen. It tends to be slightly quieter in character than the New South/Harbin corridor.
Village A and Village C are apartment-style complexes generally occupied by upperclassmen. They represent the housing trajectory many Georgetown students aim for as they move through their four years.
Kennedy Hall and Reynolds Hall are smaller, traditional-style residence halls. Students in these buildings often describe a closer-knit community given the smaller population.
LXR (Loyola, Xavier, and Ryan Halls) is a complex near the main academic buildings on the upper campus. It is generally considered convenient for students whose academic departments cluster in that part of the university.
Dining: Leo’s
Leo J. O’Donovan Hall, universally called “Leo’s,” is the main dining facility on campus and the social hub of mealtimes. Parents visiting campus will find Leo’s the most practical option for a meal with their student. The Faculty Club is available for more formal parent dining when it is open.
Georgetown’s residential dining program is largely structured around meal plan access at Leo’s for freshmen, with additional retail dining locations across campus. Your student’s first-semester meal plan structure will be explained during orientation and in the housing materials.
How much does Georgetown University cost? Tuition, financial aid, and scholarships for 2026-27
Georgetown is a high-cost, high-investment institution. The following figures reflect recent published rates. All figures should be verified at georgetown.edu as annual updates typically take effect each summer.
What Georgetown Costs
Georgetown is a high-cost, high-investment institution. The following figures reflect recent published rates. All figures should be verified at georgetown.edu as annual updates typically take effect each summer.
| Cost Component | Approximate Annual Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | approximately $65,000 (verify at georgetown.edu) |
| Room and Board | approximately $18,000-$21,000 (verify at georgetown.edu) |
| Total Cost of Attendance | approximately $83,000-$86,000+ (verify at georgetown.edu) |
These are published sticker prices. For families who qualify for need-based aid, the actual cost may be substantially lower. This is the most important financial fact about Georgetown, and it shapes everything else in this section.
Georgetown’s Financial Aid Philosophy
Georgetown practices need-blind admissions for United States citizens and permanent residents, and it meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted students. Read that again, because it is the sentence that changes the financial calculus for many families.
Georgetown does not offer merit-based scholarships as a general program. If your student was admitted to Georgetown, they were admitted on their merits, but they will not receive a scholarship offer based on GPA or test scores. Georgetown’s model is entirely need-based. Families with significant demonstrated financial need may receive aid packages that reduce the net cost dramatically. Families without demonstrated financial need pay near the full sticker price, because there is no merit scholarship program to bridge the gap.
The Regents Scholarship is given to a very small number of students of exceptional accomplishment. If your student receives a Regents Scholarship notification, it is a genuine distinction. For the overwhelming majority of students, the financial aid conversation is entirely a need-based one.
This distinction matters when families are comparing Georgetown to schools with strong merit aid programs. A school offering a $30,000/year merit scholarship may end up costing less for a family with no demonstrated financial need than Georgetown does. Families should run the net price calculator at georgetown.edu and compare actual award letters before making enrollment decisions based on cost.

The Georgetown Neighborhood and Washington, DC
Georgetown the neighborhood is one of the finest urban neighborhoods in the United States, which is a statement that requires no qualification.
The Neighborhood Itself
Georgetown the neighborhood is one of the finest urban neighborhoods in the United States, which is a statement that requires no qualification. The Federal period rowhouses along N Street, the boutiques and restaurants on Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, the cobblestone stretches near the old canal: this is not a college town that exists to serve the university. It is a historic residential neighborhood that happens to contain a university, and parents visiting for the weekend will find themselves somewhere genuinely worth exploring.
Restaurants near campus for parent visits:
Clyde’s of Georgetown is the classic, reliably good parent dinner destination. It has been on the corner of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue in various forms for decades and remains a reasonable choice when you want something familiar and reliably executed.
Sequoia Restaurant sits on the Georgetown waterfront at the Washington Harbour complex and offers what is probably the best setting for a parent dinner in the immediate area. Tables with Potomac views, consistent food, and the pleasant sense of being in a city that knows what it is doing with river real estate.
The Tombs is the undergraduate institution of Georgetown dining, a subterranean bar and restaurant on Prospect Street that has been absorbing Georgetown students since 1962. Parents who visit will immediately understand why their student talks about it.
Farther into the city:
Farmers and Distillers in Penn Quarter is a good option if you are heading toward a Georgetown basketball game at Capital One Arena or exploring the museums nearby.
The National Mall is approximately 3 miles from campus by GUTS shuttle, rideshare, or transit. The Smithsonian Institution’s free museums line the Mall, and the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Washington Monument are within walking distance of each other. If your student has not taken you to the Mall by the time you visit for the second time, take yourself. Block three hours minimum.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is about a mile from campus along the river and offers student rush tickets at steep discounts. Worth mentioning to your student, and worth attending with them if the schedule aligns with a visit.
For Parents: What the City Asks of You
Washington is a walkable city in the neighborhoods that matter most for Georgetown families. Comfortable shoes are not optional. The Georgetown neighborhood itself is hilly: the campus sits above the waterfront, and walks from the river back up to campus will remind you that it is, in fact, a hill. The Exorcist Steps (formally known as the 75 Steps), made famous by the film, connect M Street to Prospect Street and function as an unofficial Georgetown landmark. They are also genuinely steep. Use them for the experience, not as a daily commuting strategy.
When is Georgetown University Family Weekend 2026 and how do parents plan for it?
Georgetown University Family Weekend 2026 is October 16 to 18, 2026.
Confirm the schedule and registration on the official family weekend page. Hotels near campus sell out early, so book as soon as dates are confirmed.
Georgetown University refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
Credit is calculated from the date the student’s Dean’s office, not the professor or Registrar, is formally notified in writing, so the clock only starts once that specific office has the paperwork, a delay in routing the notice can cost a refund tier.
Refund schedule: for Fall 2026 (Main-Full Session): 100% refund through September 8, 80% through September 22, 70% through October 6, 50% through October 20, 40% through October 27, 0% after that (though withdrawal is still permitted through November 18). Confirmed via the official Georgetown University refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.
Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.
Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.
GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.
Georgetown prohibits ALL undergraduates, not just freshmen, from bringing a car to campus.
The ban covers not just campus lots but nearby public residential streets, so parking off campus isn’t a workaround; the university points students to Metro, the free GUTS shuttle, Zipcar, and Capital Bikeshare instead.
Confirmed via the official Georgetown parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.
Georgetown Family Weekend typically falls in October. Specific dates vary by year; check the official calendar at georgetown.edu well in advance of booking travel, as hotel rooms in the Georgetown neighborhood and across DC fill quickly once dates are announced.
Family Weekend
Georgetown Family Weekend typically falls in October. Specific dates vary by year; check the official calendar at georgetown.edu well in advance of booking travel, as hotel rooms in the Georgetown neighborhood and across DC fill quickly once dates are announced.
The programming typically includes campus tours, department open houses, performances, and athletic events. Georgetown basketball season opens in the fall, and Family Weekend sometimes coincides with early-season games. Capital One Arena hosts Georgetown’s major home games and is accessible from Foggy Bottom via Metro, which makes it easier to reach than campus itself for an evening event.
Midnight Madness
When basketball season officially begins in October, Georgetown marks the occasion with Midnight Madness, a celebration of the first official practice open to the student community. The atmosphere is genuinely energetic, and for students who care about basketball (which, at Georgetown, is a meaningful subset of the campus), it represents the first real gathering of the athletic year. If your student mentions Midnight Madness during a fall phone call, they are not being dramatic about a sporting event. They are describing a real tradition.
The Jesuit Academic Tradition
Georgetown’s academic traditions are shaped by its Jesuit identity in ways that are practical rather than merely ceremonial. The requirement that students engage with diverse disciplines, including theology and philosophy, reflects a genuine institutional commitment to education as formation rather than credentialing. First-year students encounter this most directly in the core curriculum requirements, which may surprise students who expected to specialize immediately.
Hotels for Family Weekend
The Georgetown neighborhood hotels are excellent and expensive. The Rosewood Georgetown and The Graham Georgetown are both walkable to campus and offer a comfortable parent experience, at a price point that reflects their location. The Kimpton George Hotel, closer to Capitol Hill, offers a quieter option with good service.
More affordable alternatives: hotels in Foggy Bottom (a 15-minute walk or short GUTS shuttle ride from campus), Dupont Circle (Metro-accessible), and Rosslyn, Virginia (just across the Key Bridge, walkable in good weather). Rosslyn in particular tends to run meaningfully cheaper than the Georgetown neighborhood while remaining genuinely convenient.
Book as early as possible. October hotel availability in Washington fills from multiple directions simultaneously.
How can parents support their Georgetown University student’s mental health?
Asking about mental health resources is one of the most important things a parent can do when researching any university. Georgetown has invested in this infrastructure, and knowing what exists before your student needs it is the practical version of that parental instinct.
Georgetown Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) is the primary mental health resource for undergraduate and graduate students. CAPS provides both short-term counseling and psychiatric services, including urgent care for students in acute distress. The office is staffed by licensed clinical professionals, and students can access services through the online scheduling portal. Contact information and appointment scheduling are available at caps.georgetown.edu.
TimelyCare is available to Georgetown students as a telehealth platform providing 24/7 mental health support, including on-demand talks with counselors outside of CAPS business hours. This is the resource students can reach at 2 a.m. when CAPS is not staffed. Knowing it exists matters more than knowing exactly how the login works.
Peer counseling programs exist through CAPS and through student organizations. Georgetown’s campus culture supports peer-to-peer mental health conversations in ways that supplement formal clinical services.
The Hilltoss mental health program is Georgetown’s peer education initiative around mental health awareness and destigmatization. Students involved in Hilltoss are trained to have conversations about mental health in dorm and community contexts.
What parents can do: Normalize using these resources before your student leaves for campus. The barrier to making the first CAPS appointment is partly logistical and partly psychological. Families who have already talked openly about counseling as a reasonable tool remove some of the psychological barrier. Your student does not need to be in crisis to use CAPS. Counseling is for managing ordinary life stress as much as it is for acute situations.
For students who want additional support or who prefer to work with a therapist outside the campus system, online therapy platforms are worth knowing about.

What is Georgetown University known for academically? Top programs and research strengths
Georgetown’s academic identity is defined by the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, and if your student is enrolled there, they have chosen one of the most prestigious international affairs programs in the world. The Walsh School is not simply a strong regional program with national recognition.
It is the school that trains the people who go on to shape American foreign policy, work in multilateral institutions, and staff the State Department, intelligence agencies, and foreign embassies. The academic pedigree and the professional pipelines are both real.
The McDonough School of Business is similarly well-regarded, particularly for students interested in finance, consulting, and the intersection of business and policy that Washington’s economy produces in unusual concentration.
Georgetown Law is among the most consistently top-ranked law schools in the country. The undergraduate students who attend with law school in their long-term plans benefit from being embedded in an institution where legal thinking permeates the intellectual culture, and from the proximity to federal courts, regulatory agencies, and the legal firms that cluster in DC.
The School of Medicine and School of Nursing serve pre-health students in ways that reflect Georgetown’s location: proximity to major medical centers, clinical training opportunities, and a research environment shaped by the public health dimensions of governing a major city.
The College of Arts and Sciences is where students outside the professional schools pursue traditional liberal arts disciplines, and Georgetown’s emphasis on cross-disciplinary engagement through the core curriculum means that students in McDonough and Walsh also receive grounding in philosophy, theology, history, and writing.
The Washington advantage: No campus in the country offers what Georgetown offers in terms of proximity to the machinery of American power. Internship pipelines to the State Department, the Congress, the White House, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, major think tanks, and K Street law firms are routine for Georgetown students. When faculty mention that a former student is currently serving in a particular role, they are often not speaking in abstractions. The city is the curriculum in ways that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
Students who come to Georgetown without taking advantage of DC are missing the point. The city is not backdrop. It is the laboratory.
You Are a Hoya Family Now
The transition your family is going through is not only your student’s transition. The parent experience of the first year, in particular, involves its own set of adjustments: new communication rhythms, the strange experience of having someone you raised be suddenly less available, the mixture of pride and anxiety that accompanies any major launch.
Georgetown has a Family Programs office specifically because the university understands that parents are stakeholders in this process. Use it. The newsletters, parent weekend programming, and family-oriented communications that flow through that office are not marketing. They are connection points.
Hoya Saxa. Your student is part of one of the oldest Catholic universities in the United States, in one of the most consequential cities in the world, with access to academic programs and professional networks that will shape the next several decades of their working life. That is worth something, and you played a role in getting them there.
Stay in contact. Let them call when they are ready. Send food occasionally (Leo’s is good, but it is dining hall food). And if you visit during basketball season, learn the cheer before you get to the arena.

What is Georgetown University’s graduation rate?
Georgetown University graduates 87.2% of students in four years; another 7.6 points finish within six. About 96.8% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.
38.2 pts above national
30.8 pts above national
15.8 pts above national
Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
