Georgia Family Weekend 2026
UGA Fall Family Weekend runs November 5 to 8. It is a campus weekend rather than a game day, since the Bulldogs are on the road that Saturday, which makes it a calmer time to visit, though Athens lodging still fills up. Here is everything you need to plan the trip.

Start with the essentials
Lodging is the piece that fills up first, so it is worth locking in first.
Official dates
The University of Georgia holds Fall Family Weekend on November 5 to 8, 2026, a Thursday through Sunday of campus events, tours, and gatherings. Note that the football team is away that Saturday (at Ole Miss on November 7), so this is a calmer campus visit than a game weekend. If you want to pair a home game with your trip, see the schedule below.
Athens has a limited hotel supply and it fills for Family Weekend and for every home game, often with two-night minimums on football weekends. Treat your dates as fixed and book lodging first, then handle registration and any game tickets.

Registration and getting a game
Three things to handle, in this order.
Register for Family Weekend
UGA releases the Family Weekend schedule and registration through its Parent and Family Programs office. Registration opens late summer 2026, so sign up for early-bird updates at families.uga.edu to catch it the day it opens.
Decide if you want a game
Family Weekend Saturday is an away game, so it is not a game day in Athens. The nearest home game is the following Saturday (Missouri, November 14), and the big home rivalry is Georgia Tech on November 28. Buy tickets separately if you add a game.
Lock lodging early
You do not need a registration confirmation to book a refundable room. Athens rooms are limited and go fast for both Family Weekend and home games, so reserve first and adjust later.
When hotels sell out (and how to beat it)
Athens is a mid-size town with a limited hotel supply, so Family Weekend and every home Saturday fill it, usually at raised rates and with minimum-night stays on game weekends.
Book now, cancel later
Reserve a refundable room today even if your plans are not final. On a busy weekend the price only climbs, and the closest rooms disappear first.
Widen the radius
If downtown Athens and the near-campus hotels are full, the Athens loop, Watkinsville, and the Atlanta suburbs still have rooms. See the Where to Stay table below.
Watch the minimum-night rules
Many hotels require two or three nights on a game or Family Weekend. A whole-home rental can be the more flexible option.

This is the part generic travel sites cannot produce at scale. Every area around Athens, what it is best for, roughly how far it is from campus, and how much lodging actually exists there. Drive times are approximate and heavier on game day.
| Area | Drive to campus | Best for | Typical price | Hotel density |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Athens | Walk to 5 min | Walking to campus and the music-and-food scene | $$$ | Low to medium, goes first |
| Near campus (Five Points) | 5 to 10 min | Close-in and a bit quieter | $$ to $$$ | Medium |
| Athens loop / Atlanta Hwy | 10 to 15 min | Value chains and the most availability | $$ | High |
| Watkinsville / Oconee | 15 to 20 min | Quieter, newer hotels, better rates | $$ | Medium |
| Atlanta suburbs (Gwinnett) | About 1 hr | Endless rooms, the reliable overflow | $$ to $$$ | High |

2026 Georgia home football schedule
Family Weekend (November 5 to 8) is not a home-game weekend, but many families plan a visit around a game. Georgia plays at Sanford Stadium on the dates below. The Oklahoma, Auburn, and Georgia Tech weekends are when Athens lodging peaks, so plan those the furthest ahead.
| Date | Opponent | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sat, Sept 5 | Tennessee State | Home opener |
| Sat, Sept 12 | Western Kentucky | Non-conference |
| Sat, Sept 26 | Oklahoma | Marquee, highest demand |

Georgia plays Florida on October 31 in Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a neutral site) while Jacksonville renovates, and has a bye on October 24. Kickoff times are set by TV networks 6 to 12 days out.
Closest airports
Atlanta is the practical airport for almost everyone. Athens has its own small airport, but it is barely served, so check before you count on it.
| Airport | Distance | Drive time | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATL Atlanta | About 70 mi | About 1.5 hr | Your default. The world’s busiest hub with endless fares. |
| AHN Athens (Ben Epps) | In town | Under 15 min | Right by campus, but very limited commercial flights. |
Find flights
Search Atlanta first for the widest and cheapest selection. Athens (AHN) is closest to campus but has very few flights, so it rarely works unless the schedule lines up.
Kiwi.com searches hundreds of airlines at once, including the budget carriers many sites skip.
Rental cars
You will want a car. Atlanta to Athens is about ninety minutes, and Athens and the surrounding towns are spread out.
GetRentACar compares the rental companies at Atlanta (ATL) in one search. If you would rather not drive the highway in, a private airport transfer is an option.
Things to do around Athens
Family Weekend is Thursday through Sunday. Here is how families fill the hours, plus a module for tours and tickets.
The UGA essentials
Walk North Campus and the Arch, see the historic Chapel and Sanford Stadium, and take in one of the prettiest campuses in the South.
State Botanical Garden of Georgia
Trails, a conservatory, and gardens on the edge of town for a calm morning.
Athens music and food
A legendary live-music scene, the Georgia Theatre, and a deep restaurant and bar district a short walk from campus.
Atlanta
Museums, the aquarium, and big-city dining make an easy add-on to the trip.
For tours, attractions, and city passes, these reach Atlanta better than Athens itself. Useful for an Atlanta day.
Where to eat
A short, honest list of parent-friendly spots. Reservations are essential for a busy Saturday, so book the moment your dates are set.
Athens proper
Downtown Athens has one of the best small-city food-and-music scenes anywhere, all within walking distance of campus. Reserve ahead on a busy weekend.
Near campus
A few minutes from campus with easier parking and a strong sit-down lineup. A good plan for a family dinner.
Worth the drive
If you base near Atlanta, its dining scene is a destination on its own for a Friday or Sunday night.
Game-day parking and getting around
For a Family Weekend campus visit, normal visitor parking works. If you add a home game, game-day rules differ from a normal visit.
For Family Weekend
Family Weekend is a campus weekend, so standard visitor parking decks and lots near campus are fine. Check the UGA visitor parking map for the closest deck to your events.
For a home game
Reserved game-day parking goes early. If you add the Missouri or Georgia Tech game, check UGA Athletics for passes and arrive early.
Stay close or drive in early
Downtown and near-campus lodging lets you walk to most Family Weekend events and skip the parking hunt entirely.
