Lock lodging before the schedule is even final
You do not need a finished itinerary to book a refundable hotel room, and in Ames, rooms are the scarcer resource. Reserve first, then check the official event schedule PDF once it is posted.
Why hotels still book up, even without a game
Ames is a college town built around a campus of roughly 30,000 students, and its hotel inventory reflects that. Family Weekend still concentrates real demand on one weekend, football or not.
Book now, cancel later
Reserve a refundable room as soon as your dates are set. Iowa State’s own guidance points families to the Ames CVB rather than a hotel block, which means there is no held inventory reserved for families.
Check Main Street first
The historic Main Street Cultural District downtown sits closest to campus and carries the tightest hotel supply.
Widen the radius toward Des Moines
If Ames itself is full or priced out, the Des Moines metro, about 40 to 50 minutes south, has far deeper hotel inventory.

Why there is no home football game that weekend
Iowa State used to schedule Cyclone Family Weekend around a home game. It does not anymore, and the university explains why on its own site.
Past Family Weekends built around a home game created a lack of parking availability, prohibitively expensive hotel costs, and less time for families to learn about other opportunities on campus. Family Weekend now runs independent of the football schedule for exactly those reasons.
If you want to catch the Cyclones, they play at Arizona on Saturday, October 24, so you can watch from Ames without competing for a game-day parking spot or hotel room. Iowa State separately offers discounted tickets to select other home games through the Family Connection portal; 2026 details are announced there closer to the season.

Ames does not have its own commercial airport, so Des Moines is the practical choice for nearly every family.

Things to do around Iowa State
With no game to build the day around, Family Weekend leaves real time to see campus and Ames itself.
The Campanile and central campus
Built in 1899, the Campanile is Iowa State’s signature landmark, with a climbable spiral staircase and views over campus. The Farm House, Beardshear Hall, and Jack Trice Stadium are all worth a walk-by even on a non-game weekend.
Reiman Gardens
