When is JMU Family Weekend 2026?

If you searched for JMU Parents Weekend 2026, this is the event you want. James Madison calls it Family Weekend, and that is the name on every official page, sign, and ticket. Parents Weekend is simply the phrase most people type. Nothing separate happens under that name.

There is no arrival registration. JMU states plainly that there is no need to formally register when you get to campus. That surprises parents who have been to weekends at other schools with a check-in tent and a lanyard. At JMU you simply show up. What does require registration is the individual ticketed events, and several of those have small caps and an October 1 deadline, which is covered further down.

One more piece of context worth having early. Family Weekend is not the only busy weekend on JMU’s fall calendar, and it is not Homecoming. The two are two weeks apart, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake for a JMU family. There is a short section on that below.

Find a place to stay for JMU Family Weekend

The map is centered just south of downtown Harrisonburg, about a mile from campus, which is where the closest lodging actually sits. Dates are preset to October 2 to 4. UniversityParent may earn a commission on bookings made through it, at no extra cost to you.

We are not going to tell you a percentage of rooms is gone or that prices have spiked, because nobody publishes that and inventing it would not help you book. What we can do is lay out the geography honestly, so you know which compromise you are making. Drive times below were measured to campus in normal conditions in August 2026.

JMU vs. Marshall: the Family Weekend football game

This is the section to read carefully, because the football game is both the anchor of the weekend and the part most likely to go wrong for a family that assumes it can sort tickets later.

The game is sold out, and that is official

JMU states on both its Family Weekend schedule and its Family Weekend details page that single game football tickets are sold out. Duke Club members got first access on June 22 and general public sales opened June 29. Reserved game day parking for the whole 2026 season is sold out too.

Sold out is not the same as impossible. Schools release returns, and season ticket holders sell seats they cannot use. But it does mean you should stop treating tickets as a formality and start treating them as the thing you solve first, alongside lodging.

Where to actually look

In this order.

1. The JMU Athletic Ticket Office. Call 540-568-3853 or check the official JMU ticket store. Inventory does come back. This is the cheapest path when it works, and it is not an affiliate link.
2. SeatGeek, which JMU names as the official secondary ticket marketplace of JMU Athletics. That designation is on JMU’s own Family Weekend page and JMU Athletics links to it directly. If you are buying resale, buy there.

We are deliberately not sending you to a third marketplace. JMU designates one, and for a sold out game with anxious buyers, adding a less official option to the pile makes the decision worse rather than better.

If you want your student sitting with you

This is the detail JMU spells out and most families miss. Student tickets and general seating are separate systems. JMU says that if you want to sit with your student during the game, you need to buy a General Admission ticket for them rather than relying on their student ticket. Students reserve their own tickets at student.JMUTickets.com starting 12 days before game day, and Student Duke Club members get 24 hours of early access to that window.

So the conversation to have with your student is this week, not the week of the game: do they want to sit in the student section with their friends, which is genuinely part of the experience, or with you. Both are fine. They lead to different purchases.

Kickoff time, and why it matters more here than usual

JMU has not announced a kickoff time, and its own Family Weekend schedule says the time is announced 12 days before game day. JMU Athletics currently lists a time for most other 2026 home games and none for this one, which is consistent.

Kickoff drives more of this weekend than it does at most schools, because several JMU Family Weekend events are positioned relative to it rather than at a fixed hour. The Honors Tailgate runs from three hours before kickoff to one hour before. The game day shuttle starts two hours before. Tailgating in general lots opens four hours before. Until the time is published, every one of those is a moving target. Plan the shape of Saturday now and the clock in late September.

Family Weekend is not Homecoming

These are two different weekends at JMU, two weeks apart, and they draw different crowds.

If your student mentions a big weekend in October and you are not sure which one they mean, ask. Booking a hotel for the wrong one is an expensive mistake, and both weekends put pressure on the same small lodging market.

Friday night: Train with Moon Taxi

This is the event that should decide what time you leave home on Friday, so it is worth settling early even if you are not sure you want to go.

The practical question is simple. If you want the concert, you need to be in Harrisonburg, parked, and fed before 6 p.m. on Friday. For most families driving in from Virginia, Maryland or North Carolina, that means leaving mid-afternoon at the latest, and it rules out an evening arrival. If you are skipping the concert, Friday is much softer. You could arrive at 7 p.m., take your student to dinner, and lose nothing from the weekend.

Parking is worth doing in advance. The venue sells parking for 20 dollars per car in the Ballard Parking Deck directly next to the arena and encourages buying it ahead. Surface lots around the arena are free and first come, which is a reasonable gamble on a normal night and a worse one on a Family Weekend evening with a concert.

Friday has quieter alternatives if a stadium concert is not your family’s thing. Men’s soccer hosts Coastal Carolina at Sentara Park at 7 p.m. with free admission, and the JMU Brass Band plays Forbes Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Family Weekend events worth planning around

JMU publishes a long schedule and keeps adding to it. Most of it you can decide on the morning of. This is the shorter list that actually affects what you book and when you arrive, split by whether it needs a decision now.

Book ahead, and several of these are small

The recreation trips in particular have caps in the teens and twenties, not the hundreds. JMU asks that ticketed UREC events be registered by October 1.

Walk up, no ticket, decide that morning

This is the useful half of the schedule for a family that arrives without a plan, and it is genuinely substantial.

A suggested weekend plan

This is UniversityParent’s suggested itinerary, not an official JMU schedule. It is built around a kickoff time that has not been announced yet, so Saturday is written as a shape rather than a clock. Adjust it once JMU publishes the time in late September.

You do not have to attend something every hour. The families who enjoy this weekend most tend to book one or two things and leave the rest open.

Parking and getting around campus

JMU publishes parking guidance per event, which is unusually helpful, but it also means one event’s parking instructions tell you nothing about another’s. Here is what applies across the weekend.

The rules that catch families out

Reserved football lots start filling Friday afternoon

From 4 p.m. on Friday, football lot reservations take effect and run until the game ends on Saturday. JMU says vehicles left in reserved lots after 9 p.m. Friday may be cited and towed. Reserved lots are marked with temporary signage posted at the entrances, so the sign at the lot is the thing to read, not your memory of where you parked in August.

Everything else on campus is open to visitors

Beginning Friday of Family Weekend, all JMU lots are open to visitors except those reserved football lots. Pay station parking is enforced around the clock, so check whether the lot you are in has one.

Tailgating times move with kickoff

In general lots, tailgating is permitted starting four hours before game time and must stop at kickoff. In reserved lots the rule is different and also depends on the clock: 8 a.m. for kickoffs at or before 6 p.m., and noon for kickoffs after 6 p.m. This is another reason the September kickoff announcement matters.

Use the parking decks

JMU Athletics explicitly encourages fans to use the free parking garages around campus. For a family without a reserved spot that is usually the better play than circling a surface lot.

Which deck for which event

These are the assignments JMU publishes on its own schedule. They are event specific, so do not assume one carries over to another.

Getting off the interstate

JMU’s own directions route you by exit rather than by address, which works better than a map app on game day. Exit 245 and Port Republic Road for the Warsaw Deck side of campus. Exit 247B and US-33 west for the Mason Street, Cantrell and Grace Street decks. Exit 247A and US-33 east for the Ballard Deck and the Festival lots.

Shuttles and accessibility

The football game day shuttle runs from two hours before kickoff until one hour after the game. Routes include campus points at Festival, the Convocation Center and C3, and JMU says hotel shuttles run from select Harrisonburg area hotels. The 2026 route list has not been published, so ask your hotel directly.

Accessible parking on game day is in lot C3 from 8 a.m. and requires a valid hang tag or plate. An accessible shuttle drops at the Godwin Transit Center and at Gate A for elevator access.

One practical note that has nothing to do with rules: Family Weekend events are spread across main campus, UPARK, the Arboretum and Sentara Park, and some of that is uphill. Comfortable shoes matter more here than at a compact campus, and moving the car between events is often easier than walking between them.

Airports and getting to Harrisonburg

Harrisonburg sits in the Shenandoah Valley on Interstate 81, roughly two hours from Washington. There is no useful train or bus connection from any major airport, so this section really answers one question: which airport, and how long is the drive.

You will want a car

This is not a walkable weekend from an airport. Family Weekend events are spread across campus and out to UPARK and the Arboretum, several of the recreation trips meet at a lot rather than a building, and the lodging that is actually available may be several miles out or in Staunton. Budget for a rental from wherever you land.

Campus dining during Family Weekend

JMU Dining runs three Family Weekend meals, and they are a genuinely good deal compared with taking a family of four out downtown. All three are cashless and take credit, debit, Flex and Dining Dollars. If your student has a meal plan, they eat free with one JACard punch, and if they have Flex or Dining Dollars they can pay for you.

The Fantastic Feast is the one to decide on early. It is the only one with fixed seating times and a hard reservation requirement, it requires setting up an IRIS account, and JMU asks that you print the ticket rather than show it on a phone. It is also the one that collides with an unknown kickoff, so hold off until the game time is announced if you can.

One thing to be aware of: JMU’s schedule page lists Family Brunch under Sunday, October 4, while its Family Weekend details page heads the same item as Saturday. Saturday already has Game Day at D-Hall and the Fantastic Feast, so Sunday looks correct, but confirm on the official page before you plan around it.

Where to eat in Harrisonburg

Harrisonburg punches above its size for food, and downtown is a short drive or a long walk from campus. These are places worth a reservation or a detour rather than a full directory. Hours were checked in late August 2026 and are worth reconfirming, especially on a Family Weekend.

What to do if Family Weekend events are sold out

This is a real scenario, not a hypothetical. Football is already sold out, several recreation trips cap at 10 to 30 people, and the Fantastic Feast has limited seatings. If you are reading this in September, some of it is gone. Here is a full weekend that costs almost nothing and requires no ticket.

And if you did not get football tickets, consider watching the game somewhere downtown with your student rather than treating the day as a loss. Plenty of JMU families do exactly that, and the parts of Family Weekend your student will remember are mostly not the three hours in the stadium.

October weather in Harrisonburg and what to pack

Harrisonburg sits at about 1,300 feet in the Shenandoah Valley, and early October is one of the better weeks of the year to be there. This is climate history, not a forecast, and you should check an actual forecast in the last week.

Across the last thirty years, October 1 to 7 in Harrisonburg has averaged a high near 70 degrees and a low near 51. Most days land between 57 and 81 for the high and between 41 and 61 overnight, and about three days in ten see measurable rain. The valley cools off quickly after sunset, which matters more than the daytime number.
