Langston University was established in 1897 in Langston, Oklahoma Territory, two years before Oklahoma statehood, as the Colored Agricultural and Normal University, an HBCU land-grant institution serving the Black population of the Oklahoma Territory.
The university was named for John Mercer Langston, the Virginia-born lawyer, diplomat, abolitionist, and politician who served as dean of the Howard University Law School and was elected to the United States Congress from Virginia in 1888, becoming the first Black American to represent Virginia in the House of Representatives. In the 129 years since its founding in the territorial era, Langston University has grown into a university of approximately 2,000 students as Oklahoma’s only HBCU and the only historically Black university in the Great Plains states.
The all-Black town of Langston itself is one of the surviving all-Black towns of central Oklahoma, a historical phenomenon unique to the Oklahoma Territory and early Oklahoma statehood period. In the years following the 1889 Land Run and the subsequent land runs of the early 1890s, Black homesteaders established dozens of all-Black towns across the Oklahoma Territory, communities built by formerly enslaved people and their descendants who came to the territory seeking land, autonomy, and distance from the Jim Crow laws of the former Confederate states. At peak count in the early 1900s, Oklahoma had more all-Black towns than any other state in the country. Most no longer exist. Langston is among the survivors, and its university is the institutional anchor that has kept the community alive for 129 years.
The land-grant designation gives Langston University a specific agricultural and technical education mission rooted in the 1890 Second Morrill Act, which required states to either admit Black students to their existing land-grant colleges or designate a separate land-grant institution for Black students. A Note on Lions Identity and Financial Aid
Langston’s athletic teams are the Lions, competing in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) rather than the NCAA. The colors are orange, blue, and white. The Lions compete in football, basketball, and other NAIA sports. NAIA competition provides the full college athletics experience at a scale appropriate for a university of Langston’s enrollment.
