The Miami RedHawks identity runs through two things that are not immediately obvious from the outside: the Love and Honor motto, and the Upham Arch tradition.
Love and Honor is the official university motto and also the way Miami students and alumni address each other. It is used in graduation speeches, alumni newsletters, texts between classmates a decade after graduation, and chance encounters at airports. It is not ironic. It is the lingua franca of a community that has genuinely strong ties.
The Upham Arch stands at the south entrance to the main campus quad. Tradition holds that freshmen walk under the arch on the way in to their first year, and seniors walk under it again at graduation, in the other direction, as they walk out. The arch frames the four years. Many families photograph it on move-in day without fully understanding what it represents yet.
Miami also carries the “Cradle of Coaches” designation, earned through the football program’s history of producing head coaches: Woody Hayes, Ara Parseghian, Bo Schembechler, Weeb Ewbank, and Sid Gillman all coached at Miami before going on to legendary careers. Getting to Oxford
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is the practical airport for most Miami families, 45 minutes south of Oxford. American, Delta, United, and Southwest all serve CVG with connections from major hubs. Families flying from the East Coast, South, or Midwest typically find CVG the most direct routing.
Dayton International Airport (DAY) is 40 miles north of Oxford and smaller than CVG, with more limited routes, but worth checking for certain origin cities.
Oxford is not on a major interstate. The I-75 corridor (Dayton, Cincinnati) is 30 to 35 miles west, and the I-71 corridor (Columbus, Cincinnati) is 35 miles east. Families driving into Oxford come in on US-27 from the south or north, or SR-73 from the east. The roads are fine but two-lane in places, and the GPS route through rural Butler County can feel longer than the mileage suggests. Budget extra time.
There is no Amtrak service convenient to Oxford. Driving or flying into CVG and renting a car are the two practical options for most families.

The campus has gently rolling terrain in places, particularly around the Western Campus residential area where most freshmen live. Student volunteers from orientation programs and Greek organizations staff the halls and help carry boxes. A few practical notes for the day:
- The residential quads on Western Campus are compact enough that parking and unloading are manageable, but time windows matter. Arriving outside your assigned window creates backups for everyone.
- Ship boxes ahead to your student’s hall address. Miami holds packages and this removes a significant amount of weight from the car.
- Bring a hand truck. Even short hall distances add up.
- The Upham Arch walk is worth making time for, even on move-in day. Walk through it with your student on the way to the dorm. You will be glad you did at graduation.
- Pack layers for the car trip home. Oxford in September drops faster than families from warm states expect, and if your student left their fleece in a box at the bottom of a stack, they will need it by the third week of classes.
After unloading, Uptown Oxford (the campus-adjacent downtown, always called Uptown by Miami students) is the right destination for the family dinner. The brick streets along High Street and Poplar Street form the center of student and parent social life. Brick Street Bar is a campus landmark. Skipper’s Bar and Grill is the comfortable local option. For a family dinner before the goodbye, Kofenya Coffee and the surrounding Uptown restaurants are worth the walk.

McBride Hall and Emerson Hall are the primary Western Campus freshman halls, traditional double-room style, organized around the Western quad, with Maplestreet Station dining hall and the Western Campus programming as the center of first-year community life. Anderson Hall is a mid-campus assignment common for freshmen in the College of Arts and Science and the Farmer School of Business. It sits closer to the academic core and the central dining facilities.

Miami University refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
The clock runs on school days, not calendar days, and withdrawal must be officially processed by 5pm on the qualifying day, filing even one day late drops a family into the next lower tier.
