What is the one thing every Montana State University parent needs to know before move-in?
Montana State University is a public land-grant research university with approximately 17,000 students, located in Bozeman, Montana, in the Gallatin Valley at approximately 4,800 feet elevation, with the Bridger Mountains rising immediately to the northeast and the Madison and Gallatin mountain ranges extending south toward Yellowstone National Park.
Bozeman has been one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States throughout the 2020s, attracting technology workers, outdoor recreation-oriented businesses, and residents fleeing the cost and density of the Pacific Coast cities, which has transformed the city’s restaurant scene, real estate market, and cultural infrastructure within the span of a few years.
MSU was established in 1893 as the Montana State Agricultural College, and the land-grant mission remains central to its identity: the College of Agriculture, the College of Engineering, the Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship, and the College of Education are the professional anchors that reflect the university’s service to Montana’s agricultural, engineering, and education workforce needs. The research enterprise has grown significantly, with R1 designation reflecting investment in engineering research, biomedical sciences, and the earth sciences that reflect MSU’s position in one of the most geologically active and ecologically significant landscapes in North America.
Yellowstone National Park is 90 miles south of Bozeman via US-191 through the Gallatin Canyon, and Big Sky Resort (one of the largest ski resorts in North America by acreage) is 45 miles south. These are not distant aspirational destinations for MSU students; they are regular destinations for day trips, weekend recreation, and the outdoor culture that defines the Bozeman undergraduate experience.

What makes Montana State University’s campus culture unique?
MSU’s athletic teams are the Bobcats, competing in the Big Sky Conference. The colors are blue and gold. “Go Cats!” is the call.
The Cat-Griz rivalry between Montana State and the University of Montana in Missoula (the Grizzlies) is the most celebrated rivalry in Big Sky Conference history and one of the most emotionally invested college football rivalries in the Mountain West. The game is called simply “the Brawl of the Wild” and is held alternately in Bozeman and Missoula, drawing the largest crowds for any regular-season Big Sky game. The result of the Cat-Griz game determines bragging rights across the state for the entire following year, and the social media intensity around the game is disproportionate to the geographic scale of either city.
MSU football plays at Bobcat Stadium on campus. The Big Sky Conference also includes Northern Arizona, Weber State, Sacramento State, and other Mountain West programs with national FCS relevance.
Getting to Bozeman
Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) is approximately 10 minutes north of campus, with service on Alaska, Delta, United, American, and Southwest from Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Minneapolis, and other western and midwestern hubs. The airport has expanded significantly with Bozeman’s growth, and connectivity has improved substantially.
Direct flights from major western cities are available; east-of-Rockies families typically connect through Salt Lake City or Denver.
For families driving, US-90 runs east-west through Bozeman, connecting to Billings (140 miles east) and to Idaho Falls (175 miles west). US-191 runs south from Bozeman through the Gallatin Canyon toward Yellowstone. The approach to Bozeman from the east on I-90 through the Bozeman Pass, with the Bridger Mountains visible ahead and the Gallatin Valley opening below, is one of the most beautiful interstate arrivals of any university city in the Mountain West.
What do parents need to know about Montana State University move-in day 2026?
MSU’s fall move-in runs in late August, with specific dates and arrival windows assigned by residence hall. Check montana.edu/housing for your student’s exact window. Bozeman in late August is warm and pleasant by mountain standards: temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s, low humidity, clear blue skies typical of the Northern Rockies in late summer.
Some smoke from wildfires is possible in late August and early September, particularly in dry years.
Practical notes:
- Bozeman’s late summer weather is excellent for move-in. Light layers for the evening are appropriate even in August.
- Check AQI for fire smoke during late August if smoke conditions are reported in the region.
- Ship boxes ahead. MSU holds packages, and BZN’s proximity makes flight-in arrivals practical.
- After unloading, downtown Bozeman on Main Street is a 10-minute drive from campus with an excellent restaurant scene.
The Residence Halls: Where Your Student Might Live
MSU’s residential system has expanded with the university’s enrollment growth, offering both traditional and modern facilities.
Hapner Hall and Langford Hall are traditional-style freshman residence halls in the main campus residential area, housing the majority of incoming freshmen with proximity to the main Fieldhouse dining facility. These halls are the most concentrated first-year community environment on campus.
Johnstone Hall and Hedges Hall are additional traditional-style halls in the north campus residential cluster, with community bathrooms and double rooms in buildings that have served MSU students for decades.
Miller Hall is a residence hall near the center of the academic campus with a strong community culture and proximity to the library and main classroom buildings.
Residence on South is a newer residential complex on the south edge of campus with more modern facilities, popular with upperclassmen who want updated amenities while remaining on campus.
The Strand Union Building area and community homes provide additional upperclassman options. After freshman year, many MSU students move to the surrounding Bozeman neighborhoods. Bozeman’s rental market has become significantly more expensive with the city’s growth, and the combination of a growing student population and a general population influx means that finding affordable off-campus housing requires planning well in advance.
How much does Montana State University cost? Tuition, financial aid, and scholarships for 2026-27
MSU is affordable for Montana residents and competitively priced for out-of-state students from WUE-eligible western states.

|---|---|---|
| Tuition and Fees | ~$8,000 (verify at montana.edu) | ~$27,000 (verify at montana.edu) |
| Room and Board | ~$12,000-$14,000 (verify at montana.edu) | ~$12,000-$14,000 (verify at montana.edu) |
| Books and Supplies | ~$1,000 (verify at montana.edu) | ~$1,000 (verify at montana.edu) |
| Personal and Transportation | ~$2,500 (verify at montana.edu) | ~$2,500 (verify at montana.edu) |
| Estimated Total | ~$23,500-$25,500 (verify at montana.edu) | ~$42,500-$44,500 (verify at montana.edu) |
Montana residents should verify eligibility for the MSU Merit Scholarship and the Montana University System high school scholarship programs. Out-of-state students from WUE-eligible states should check WUE eligibility for reduced tuition rates. The College of Engineering and Jake Jabs College of Business administer departmental scholarships.
If there is a gap between available aid and total costs, private student loan rates are worth comparing carefully. SoFi is consistently competitive on rates for families with strong credit. Always exhaust federal loan options first.

Bozeman and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem: What Parents Need to Know
Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley provide a parent visit context that is among the most extraordinarily beautiful of any university setting in the country, and the outdoor recreation access is genuinely exceptional.
Downtown Bozeman on Main Street has been transformed by the city’s growth into one of the best restaurant and retail corridors of any small city in the Mountain West. The independent restaurant scene, the outdoor gear shops, the craft brewery culture (MAP Brewing, 406 Brewing, Bozeman Brewing are all excellent), and the general quality of the walkable downtown make Bozeman a genuinely excellent parent visit city that far exceeds what most families expect.
Big Sky Resort is 45 miles south of Bozeman via US-191 through the Gallatin Canyon, one of the most beautiful mountain canyon drives in Montana. Big Sky’s ski terrain (the largest in the continental United States by some measures, with over 5,800 acres) and the Spanish Peaks Wilderness above it provide world-class skiing and snowboarding from November through April, with summer hiking access to alpine terrain that is spectacular.
Yellowstone National Park is 90 miles south of Bozeman through the Gallatin Canyon and through the town of West Yellowstone at the park’s west entrance. The drive from Bozeman to Yellowstone is itself one of the most beautiful drives in North America. Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, the Yellowstone caldera, the wolf packs reintroduced in 1995, and the bison herds are all within 90 minutes of campus. MSU students access Yellowstone multiple times throughout their undergraduate years.
The Gallatin River runs through the Gallatin Canyon immediately south of Bozeman, providing blue-ribbon fly fishing for trout that draws anglers from around the world. The river also provides kayaking access in the canyon’s whitewater sections, and the A River Runs Through It landscape of the Gallatin is one of the defining natural assets of the Bozeman experience.
For parent visit dining in Bozeman: Blackbird Kitchen (wood-fired pizza, locally praised, downtown), Montana Ale Works (in a converted railroad warehouse, broad menu, reliable for a group family dinner), Plonk (wine bar, downtown, excellent wine list and charcuterie), Garage (creative casual, locally beloved), and the Bozeman Hotel’s John Bozeman’s Bistro for special occasions.

Montana State University refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
Several fees, including the registration fee, orientation fee, ID fee, and dorm deposit, are non-refundable regardless of withdrawal date. The schedule is explicitly overridden by federal Title IV requirements where applicable.
Refund schedule: based on days of instruction completed: 100% refund on registration day, 90% for days 1 to 5, 75% for days 6 to 10, 50% for days 11 to 15, 0% from day 16 onward. Confirmed via the official Montana State University refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.
Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.
Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.
GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.
Freshmen may bring a car to Montana State with a paid residential permit.
Permit eligibility opens about 48 hours after registering for classes or orientation, and permits sell out lot by lot, so early purchase matters. Only one registered vehicle may be parked on campus at a time.
Freshman permit cost: $300-$395/year depending on which hall a freshman is assigned to (Bison, Bobcat Resident, or Fox permit for East Julia Martin freshman apartments). Confirmed via the official Montana State parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.
MSU’s Family Weekend is in the fall; check montana.edu/student-success for current year dates. The Big Sky football schedule at Bobcat Stadium on campus provides the fall athletics draw, and the Cat-Griz game (alternating between Bozeman and Missoula each year) is the most attended and most emotionally intense event in the MSU athletics calendar.
Hotel strategy: Bozeman’s hotel market has grown with the city’s general expansion, and hotel inventory is broader than it was a decade ago. Home game weekends and the Cat-Griz game still create meaningful booking pressure. Book any major athletics weekend and Family Weekend 6 to 8 weeks ahead. The Residence Inn Bozeman Downtown, the AC Hotel by Marriott Bozeman, and the boutique properties downtown provide the most atmospheric options.
How can parents support their Montana State University student’s mental health?
MSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and psychiatric referrals for enrolled students.
The Bozeman context has a specific mental health dimension related to the outdoor culture: the pressure to always be skiing, climbing, hiking, or otherwise performing in the landscape can create social anxiety for students who are not as outdoorsy as the general campus culture assumes. CAPS has programming that addresses the full range of student experience, including students who came to MSU for academic reasons and find the outdoor performance culture socially challenging.
The Bozeman winter (November through March) is long, dark, and cold, with significant snowfall, and students from warmer climates should plan for seasonal adjustment.

MSU’s Academic Strengths
The College of Engineering is the flagship of MSU’s research enterprise, with strong programs in civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and industrial engineering. The engineering research programs in renewable energy, biomedical devices, and environmental systems reflect Montana’s specific geographic and economic context.
The electrical engineering and computer science programs have benefited from Bozeman’s technology sector growth and the presence of technology companies that have established operations in the Gallatin Valley.
The College of Agriculture has deep connections to Montana’s wheat, livestock, and hay farming economy, with programs in agricultural science, animal science, and range science that produce graduates for Montana’s and the broader Mountain West’s agricultural sector. The Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship has grown rapidly with Bozeman’s economic expansion, with programs in entrepreneurship, finance, and management that reflect the city’s start-up culture.
The College of Arts and Architecture and the Department of Earth Sciences (whose research in geology, paleontology, and volcanology reflects Montana’s extraordinary geological heritage, including Glacier National Park, Yellowstone’s caldera, and some of the richest dinosaur fossil fields in the world) round out the academic profile. The Museum of the Rockies on the MSU campus is the most significant paleontological museum in the Mountain West, housing the largest T. rex skull ever discovered.

Bozeman is one of the most beautiful places to spend four years in America, in a landscape that asks something of everyone who lives in it. The Cat-Griz game. The first powder day of the season at Big Sky. The elk visible from the highway driving back from Yellowstone in November. These are the things that MSU students describe when they explain what college was like.

What is Montana State University’s graduation rate?
Montana State University graduates 36.7% of students in four years; another 20.4 points finish within six. About 78.5% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.
12.3 pts below national
6.9 pts below national
2.5 pts below national
Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
