Norfolk State University was founded in 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University, established to provide higher education access to the Black community of the Hampton Roads area of Virginia during an era when Virginia’s segregated public universities excluded Black students from their campuses.

A Note on Spartans Identity and Financial Aid
Norfolk State’s athletic teams are the Spartans, competing in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) at the Division I level. The colors are green and gold. The Spartans compete in basketball, football, baseball, softball, and other CAA sports.

This is a full-withdrawal-from-the-university schedule, distinct from NSU’s separate drop-a-class rule which is a simple 100%-then-0% cutoff with no proration. Housing and meal charges follow a separate, more generous prorated schedule than tuition.
