North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University was founded in 1891 in Greensboro, North Carolina, as the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race, established as North Carolina’s land-grant institution for Black students (while North Carolina State handled the equivalent mission for white students).
In the 135 years since, NC A&T has grown into the largest HBCU in the United States by undergraduate enrollment (approximately 12,000 to 13,000 undergraduate students), a Carnegie R2 doctoral research university, and one of the most nationally significant institutions in Black higher education.
Greensboro is a city of approximately 300,000 people in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina (the metro that also includes Winston-Salem and High Point, with a combined metropolitan population of approximately 1.7 million), and it is one of the most significant cities in the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. On February 1, 1960, four NC A&T freshmen (Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain, and Joseph McNeil, known collectively as the Greensboro Four) sat down at the Woolworth’s lunch counter on Elm Street in downtown Greensboro and refused to leave when denied service, initiating the Greensboro sit-in that became one of the defining events of the Civil Rights Movement and sparked sit-in protests across the South. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum (in the original Woolworth’s building at 134 S. Elm Street) preserves the lunch counter and the history of the sit-in, and every NC A&T student lives in proximity to one of the most important sites in American history.
The Blue and Gold Marching Machine is NC A&T’s celebrated marching band, one of the most recognized and admired in HBCU band culture, with performances at bowl games, national events, and the annual MEAC homecoming festivities.

A Note on Aggies Identity and Financial Aid
NC A&T’s athletic teams are the Aggies, competing in the Big South Conference at the Division I level. The colors are blue and gold. The Charlotte, Atlanta, and Philadelphia connections from GSO provide access to most national markets.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is approximately 75 miles east of Greensboro via I-40, providing more comprehensive domestic connections for families from western US and international markets.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is approximately 90 miles south of Greensboro via I-85, and is the largest airport in the Carolinas with direct connections from virtually every US domestic market and many international cities.
For families driving, I-85 connects Greensboro to Charlotte (90 miles south) and Durham and the Research Triangle (75 miles east). I-40 runs east-west through Greensboro connecting to Winston-Salem and the Research Triangle.

The International Civil Rights Center and Museum at 134 S. Elm Street (the original Woolworth’s building where the 1960 sit-ins occurred) is the most important civil rights museum in the Carolinas and among the most significant in the country. This schedule applies to students with non-Title IV aid; students receiving federal aid are additionally subject to a separate Return of Title IV Funds policy that can create a balance owed to the university independent of this schedule.
