Oberlin College was founded in 1833 in the Western Reserve of Ohio, approximately 35 miles southwest of Cleveland, and it distinguished itself immediately from every other college in the United States in two foundational ways: it was the first college in the country to admit women alongside men (1837), and it was the first to admit Black students alongside white students (1835, before the Civil War). These two decisions, made when the country’s institutional consensus about who deserved higher education was unambiguous, define what Oberlin is: an institution with a 190-year commitment to the radical proposition that education is a human right rather than a privilege of race or gender. Oberlin has always been ahead of the country, and the campus culture that has developed from that founding reflects this history in ways that are palpable in the social and intellectual life of the institution today.
Oberlin is also unique in American higher education in that it contains two degree-granting institutions on a single campus that share faculty, facilities, and community: Oberlin College (the liberal arts college) and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (one of the premier music conservatories in the United States, the oldest conservatory in continuous operation in the country, founded 1865). Students can be admitted to the College only, the Conservatory only, or, through the Double Degree Program, to both simultaneously, completing both a Bachelor of Arts from the College and a Bachelor of Music from the Conservatory in five years. Oberlin’s athletic teams are the Yeomen and Yeowomen, competing in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) at the Division III level. The color is crimson.
Division III athletics at Oberlin means no athletic scholarships and a student-athlete culture where the academic and musical life of the campus takes precedence over athletics in the institutional culture. Oberlin has teams across the standard range of Division III sports, and participation rates are high, but athletics is not the defining social institution of the campus.
The defining social institutions of Oberlin are the residential cooperatives (8 cooperative houses that function as student-run living and eating communities outside the mainstream campus dining system), the Conservatory performance culture, the student political and activist organizations, and the cooperative social culture that reflects Oberlin’s founding commitment to community and shared responsibility.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is approximately 40 minutes northeast of Oberlin via I-480 and US-20, served by Delta, United, American, and Southwest from major domestic hubs. Cleveland is a mid-size hub with good connectivity from the Midwest, East Coast, and major national markets; west-of-Rockies families typically connect through Chicago or Denver.
For families driving, US-20 runs west-east connecting Oberlin to Cleveland, and US-511 connects the north-south between the Ohio Turnpike (I-80) and Oberlin. The Ohio Turnpike provides the primary east-west corridor connecting Cleveland to Toledo and Chicago.
