What is the one thing every Purdue University parent needs to know before move-in?
Purdue move-in is Housing contracts begin Friday, August 21, 2026, with the first meal served that morning.
Fall 2026 classes begin Monday, August 24, 2026.
Classes begin the following Monday. Purdue does have a real fall break, October 12 and 13.
Verified against the official academic calendar and housing calendar in July 2026. Move-in times are assigned individually, so confirm your student’s slot in the housing portal before booking travel.
Here is the number that changes the math for every family comparing engineering and technical programs: in-state tuition at Purdue University is approximately $10,000 per year (verify at purdue.edu). As of 2026, Purdue has held that number flat for over a decade, the longest tuition freeze among major research universities in the country.
This is a documented institutional policy, maintained through leadership changes and through years when virtually every comparable institution raised prices. A student pursuing a Purdue engineering degree, one of the top-10 programs in the country, does so at a price that families with real budget constraints can reach. The degree has been going up in value. The price has not been going up at all.
This guide covers what Boilermaker parents need to know: move-in logistics, residence halls, the full cost picture, financial aid, what the town is like, Family Weekend, mental health resources, and the key contacts you will use across four years.

Being a Boilermaker Family: Identity and Culture
“Boiler Up!” You will hear it at orientation, at football games, at commencement, and in the group chats of Purdue parents who have never even met each other. “Hammer Down!” is the response. Together they are the call-and-response of a community that takes genuine pride in where they come from and what they build.
The Boilermaker identity is not abstract. It is tied to a specific history of practical excellence. Purdue was built on engineering, agriculture, and applied science at a time when those things built the country. The mascot, Pete the Boilermaker, is a burly construction-worker figure, not a regal animal or a warrior. He represents the ethos: Purdue is a place that values work, craft, and results over polish.
Neil Armstrong graduated from Purdue in 1955 and was the first human being to walk on the moon. Purdue holds that connection as institutional pride, not just a footnote. The connection to American aerospace achievement runs deep: 24 of the first 24 NASA astronauts who were not military test pilots were Purdue graduates.
The Purdue Marching “All-American” Band is one of the largest college marching bands in the country. They perform at Ross-Ade Stadium, which holds approximately 57,000 people, on Big Ten game days that define fall in West Lafayette. The Boilermaker Special, a full-scale replica locomotive, drives through the stadium on game days. These are not novelties. They are the touchstones of what it means to be part of this place.
Purdue competes in the Big Ten Conference. The athletic culture is strong, and football season in particular creates a campus energy that families experience most directly at Family Weekend in October.
How do parents get to Purdue University? Travel guide from Indianapolis International Airport
West Lafayette sits in the heart of central Indiana, and the most practical way to get there is by car. If you are flying, Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is the primary option, about 65 miles south of campus. The drive on I-65 North takes approximately 60 to 70 minutes under normal conditions.
IND is a modern, manageable airport with direct routes from most major cities. Rental cars are the standard choice once you land.
Chicago O’Hare (ORD) is the secondary option, approximately 100 miles northwest of West Lafayette. The drive is roughly two hours in normal traffic, though Chicago-area congestion can extend that meaningfully on Friday afternoons. O’Hare serves more international routes and often has more competitive fares than IND, so for some families it is worth the longer drive.
Lafayette Municipal Airport (LAF) is immediately adjacent to campus but has very limited commercial service. Do not plan around it for regular travel.
West Lafayette is a classic Midwest college town in its transportation profile: thoroughly navigable by car, not transit-dependent, and genuinely straightforward to drive around once you arrive. The campus is compact and walkable for students, but parents visiting from out of town will want a car for the full visit experience.
For move-in weekend and Family Weekend, hotel inventory in West Lafayette and Lafayette fills quickly. Book accommodations as early as possible. to check availability in both cities. If local options are sold out, Indianapolis (65 miles south) offers significantly more hotel inventory and is a viable base for parents who do not mind the commute.
What do parents need to know about Purdue University move-in day 2026?
Purdue move-in takes place in late August. Residence hall assignments determine your student’s specific move-in date and time window, communicated through the University Residences portal in advance. Arrive during your assigned window. Purdue processes thousands of students across multiple halls simultaneously, and the logistics are carefully orchestrated.
Early arrivals outside assigned windows create congestion for everyone.
Late August in West Lafayette is warm, typically reaching the mid-80s, with Indiana humidity. Plan for a physically demanding day in heat. Dress accordingly, bring water, and pace the work across your family.
Move-in is a well-organized operation given Purdue’s scale. Student volunteers in matching shirts will be at the entrance to every hall, and they are genuinely helpful. They will carry boxes, answer questions, and direct you through the building. Accept the help. These volunteers are current Purdue students who have done this before.
Practical checklist for move-in day: a collapsible hand truck makes multiple trips easier. A small toolkit handles most room assembly tasks. Command strips are essential since most halls prohibit nailing. Pre-order dorm supplies to arrive at the hall rather than transporting them from home. covers everything from bedding and storage to shower caddies and desk lamps.
For items that do not fit in the room, handles student storage logistics at move-in and move-out, including pickup and delivery at the hall.
Full printable Purdue dorm packing list
for move-in weekend accommodations. Book early. Home football game weekends and Family Weekend create the highest demand, but move-in weekend itself also stresses local hotel supply.
Purdue Residence Halls: Named Halls and What to Know
All Purdue freshmen are required to live on campus. The residential system is one of the largest in the country, and the halls vary in size, age, amenity level, and community feel. Here is a practical overview of the major options your student may be assigned to.
Hawkins Hall and Shreve Hall sit in the north residential area and are among the most common freshman assignments. They are traditional double-occupancy halls with shared bathrooms and the full community life of a large residence corridor. These halls are active, social, and positioned close to dining and green space.
Harrison Hall is a residential quad complex, co-ed, and popular with freshmen. The quad configuration gives it a slightly different social geography than a single tower hall, with more natural outdoor gathering space between buildings.
McCutcheon Hall and Tarkington Hall form the Owen Residential College complex. This pairing combines two large halls with themed academic and social programming, and its proximity to the engineering buildings makes it a practical choice for students in technical programs who want to walk to class quickly.
Windsor Hall is Purdue’s all-women’s residence hall. It has its own dining court and a close-knit community culture that many residents find distinctive within the larger system.
Earhart Hall and Third Street Suites represent newer residential options with updated facilities and more modern room configurations than the older corridor-style halls. Third Street Suites in particular offers a layout closer to apartment-style living.
Hilltop Apartments are primarily for upperclassmen and are apartment-style. Freshmen assigned here are typically in specific programs or have made specific requests.
Dining: Purdue’s dining program is large and generally well-regarded for a residential university of its scale. Earhart Dining Court consistently earns strong reviews and has been recognized nationally for quality among university dining facilities. Wiley Dining Court is one of the primary dining options in the north residential area. Windsor Dining Court serves that hall community. The Purdue Memorial Union serves as a central campus gathering and food option as well. Freshmen on a residential meal plan will have access to the dining system across halls.
One practical note for parents: Purdue’s winters are real. West Lafayette in January is cold in a sustained, ground-level way. If your student is arriving from a warm climate, they need a genuinely warm winter coat, waterproof boots that handle snow and ice, thermal underlayers for long outdoor walks between classes, and warm gloves. This is not optional gear. Plan for it before they leave home, not after they call from campus in November asking why they are so cold.
How much does Purdue University cost? Tuition, financial aid, and scholarships for 2026-27
Purdue’s cost structure is genuinely unusual among major research universities.
Estimated annual costs (2026-27):
| Cost Category | Indiana Resident | Out-of-State |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | Approximately $10,000 (verify at purdue.edu) | Approximately $28,000-$30,000 (verify at purdue.edu) |
| Room and board | Approximately $11,000-$13,000 (verify at purdue.edu) | Approximately $11,000-$13,000 (verify at purdue.edu) |
| Books and personal expenses | Approximately $2,500-$3,200 | Approximately $2,500-$3,200 |
| Estimated annual total | Approximately $23,000-$26,000 | Approximately $41,000-$45,000 |
All figures are estimates. Verify current costs at purdue.edu before making financial decisions.
Financial aid for Indiana residents:
Indiana families have access to several programs that reduce the actual out-of-pocket cost. Purdue Promise provides free tuition for Indiana residents whose family income falls below certain thresholds. The Twenty-first Century Scholars Program supports lower-income Indiana students who enrolled in middle school. The Frank O’Bannon Grant is Indiana’s primary need-based grant, distributed through the FAFSA process. File the FAFSA as early as October 1 of your student’s senior year.
Merit scholarships:
Purdue offers the Trustees Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship to incoming freshmen based on academic achievement. National Merit Finalists who designate Purdue as their first-choice institution may receive corporate sponsor awards. Review current award amounts at finaid.purdue.edu.
For out-of-state families:
Out-of-state tuition runs approximately $28,000-$30,000 per year (verify at purdue.edu), with total cost of attendance around $41,000-$45,000. This is competitive with comparable out-of-state flagships and substantially below most private universities with comparable engineering programs. Purdue does offer merit awards to out-of-state students. Review specifics at finaid.purdue.edu.
FAFSA guide for Purdue families
Full college cost planning guide
for families who need to supplement federal aid with private financing. Federal loans and grants should always be exhausted first. The FAFSA establishes your federal eligibility and should be filed as early as October 1 of your student’s senior year.
West Lafayette and Lafayette: Life Off Campus
West Lafayette is a college town in the truest sense. The campus is the center of gravity, and the community around it is built around the rhythms of student life.
The adjacent city of Lafayette, across the Wabash River, provides additional amenities and a somewhat broader urban feel, though the combined area is still a mid-sized Midwest market rather than a major metro.
For parents visiting and wanting to eat well, a few names worth knowing. Nine Irish Brothers, a West Lafayette institution, offers a full pub menu with a lively atmosphere and is a reliable choice for a family dinner near campus. Arni’s has been a Purdue tradition for decades and serves pizza in a setting that feels genuinely connected to the university’s history. The Big Apple Diner on State Street is a classic diner option for a low-key breakfast or lunch.
The Wabash River Walk connects the two cities along the riverbank and is a pleasant option for a walk during a family visit, particularly in fall when the foliage is strong and the weather is still comfortable.
West Lafayette is not a destination city and should not be evaluated as one. Parents whose students are drawn to urban environments may need to reframe expectations around what makes a Purdue experience rich: the campus itself, the engineering community, the traditions, and the proximity to Indianapolis. Indianapolis is 65 miles south and provides city-scale dining, museums, professional sports, and entertainment for students and parents who want it within a reasonable drive.
What West Lafayette does reliably is create a genuine campus-centered college experience. Students who came to Purdue for the program and the community find that the town delivers exactly what they need for four years. Students who were hoping for a bigger surrounding city sometimes adjust to this more gradually.
When is Purdue University Family Weekend 2026 and how do parents plan for it?
Purdue Family Weekend 2026 is October 16 to 18, 2026.
Family Weekend coincides with Purdue against Washington on October 16. Homecoming is a separate weekend, November 5 to 7, with the parade Friday November 6 and the game against Maryland Saturday November 7.
Confirm the schedule and registration on the official family weekend page. Hotels near campus sell out early, so book as soon as dates are confirmed.
Purdue University refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
This is the same schedule Purdue applies to a full university withdrawal, not just an individual course drop. Special course fees are nonrefundable after the first week, and the International Student Fee is nonrefundable regardless of timing.
Refund schedule: for the Fall 2026 full term: 100% refund before September 1, 80% by September 8, 60% by September 22, 40% by October 6, 0% after October 6. Eight-week sub-terms hit 0% much sooner, the applicable schedule depends on which term length a student’s courses fall under. Confirmed via the official Purdue University refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.
Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.
Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.
GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.
First-year students are not eligible for a standard Residence Hall parking permit at Purdue, regardless of earned credits.
An exception process exists for documented off-campus needs (medical appointments, off-campus classes, military duty, employment, though rideshare/delivery jobs don’t qualify), but approval isn’t automatic and requires a form with supporting documentation.
Freshman permit cost: not applicable for a standard permit; a $75/year exception-only permit exists for a gravel lot away from central campus. Confirmed via the official Purdue parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.
Purdue’s Parents and Families Weekend typically takes place in October, timed to coincide with Big Ten football season. In most years, a home game anchors the weekend and gives families the full Boilermaker game-day experience.
Ross-Ade Stadium holds approximately 57,000 people. On a full autumn afternoon with the Purdue Marching “All-American” Band performing in the stands, it is the kind of experience that is difficult to convey to someone who has not been in it. The band is one of the largest in college football and is a point of genuine Purdue pride. The Boilermaker Special locomotive making its way through the stadium is a tradition that stops people who have seen it dozens of times. “Boiler Up!” travels through the crowd in a way that is louder than 57,000 people should be able to produce.
For parents who want the game-day experience, plan ahead. Ross-Ade stadium general admission and reserved seating sell through the ticket office at purdue.edu. Tailgating around the stadium is a family-friendly tradition with a strong showing from parent groups and alumni.
Beyond the game, Family Weekend programming typically includes campus tours, academic open houses, college-specific events for students in engineering, agriculture, business, and other programs, and social events organized by student groups. Check the official Family Weekend schedule at purdue.edu/parents each fall, as specific events vary by year.
Lodging during Family Weekend is genuinely tight. West Lafayette and Lafayette together do not have the hotel volume of a larger city, and Family Weekend combined with a home game creates the highest-demand weekend of the fall semester. as early as possible once dates are announced. Indianapolis, 65 miles south, provides a much larger pool of hotel options for families who do not mind the drive. Kokomo, approximately 40 miles southeast, is another overflow market worth checking.
Purdue’s fall traditions extend beyond Family Weekend. The Homecoming celebration includes the Purdue Grand Prix go-kart race, which is entirely student-organized and student-run and is one of the more genuinely unique college traditions in the country. If you are visiting in April, the Grand Prix is worth seeing.
How can parents support their Purdue University student’s mental health?
Purdue’s academic culture is demanding. Engineering and CS programs in particular attract students who were top performers throughout their academic lives and who encounter, often for the first time in their first semester, a genuine calibration experience.
A room full of students who all graduated near the top of their class becomes, by definition, a room where most of them are no longer at the top. This adjustment is normal, common, and temporary for most students. It is also disorienting and can feel isolating to students who have never struggled academically before.
Being proactive with your student about this dynamic before they arrive makes a difference. Normalize that difficulty at Purdue is not a sign they chose the wrong school. It is a sign they are among talented peers doing rigorous work.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is Purdue’s primary mental health resource. CAPS provides individual counseling, group therapy, crisis services, and psychiatric support. For students who need timely access, Purdue has expanded same-day and urgent appointment availability in recent years. Encourage your student to engage early rather than waiting until a crisis point. Reach CAPS at caps.purdue.edu.
Let’s Talk is a Purdue program that offers informal, drop-in consultation with counselors at various locations across campus, including in some residence halls. No appointment is required. It is a low-barrier entry point for students who want to talk through something without committing to formal counseling. Many students who eventually engage with CAPS start with a Let’s Talk session.
TimelyCare is a telehealth platform available to Purdue students that provides both medical and mental health services, including on-demand mental health support at times when CAPS may not be immediately available.
Online therapy is a supplemental option for students who want flexible mental health support from their dorm room. It is not a replacement for crisis services, but for students who want consistent ongoing support with scheduling flexibility, it is a genuine resource.
Parents dealing with a mental health concern from a distance should know that FERPA and HIPAA apply at Purdue as at every university. Your student’s records are confidential unless they choose to share. The Dean of Students office (dos.purdue.edu) can speak with parents about general resources even when it cannot share specifics about your student’s situation.
Purdue’s health center will not start a new stimulant prescription, and may not continue one already in place.
PUSH (student health) prescribes non-stimulant ADHD medication only. CAPS states it “may not continue” an existing stimulant script, and instead favors non-stimulant options and ADHD coaching. Students who need to keep a stimulant prescription should plan to fill it through a provider back home or a local off-campus psychiatrist.
Verified against Purdue CAPS, August 2026.

What is Purdue University known for academically? Top programs and research strengths
Purdue’s reputation is built on technical excellence, and the programs that define that reputation are among the strongest in the country.
College of Engineering is the cornerstone. Purdue Engineering is consistently ranked among the top 5 to 10 undergraduate programs in the country. Aeronautics and astronautics is among the best in the world. Electrical, computer, mechanical, and civil engineering all carry comparable national standing. The 24-of-24 astronaut statistic reflects a sustained pipeline to NASA, SpaceX, Boeing, and the major defense contractors that continues today.
Purdue Polytechnic Institute includes the aviation technology program, backed by a university-owned airport where students can pursue a pilot’s license as part of their academic work. This is one of a small number of programs in the country where this credential is available.
Krannert School of Management is well-ranked for undergraduate business and its MBA, with particular strength in supply chain management and operations.
College of Agriculture is one of the best in the country, with strong programs in agricultural economics, food science, and related fields.
College of Science houses the CS program, which ranks in the top 15 nationally and places graduates at major technology companies, along with strong programs in mathematics, statistics, chemistry, and physics.
College of Pharmacy and College of Liberal Arts complete the academic profile. Pharmacy is a professional program with competitive admission and strong outcomes.
Purdue’s employer recruiting presence on campus is extensive, drawing from defense, aerospace, automotive, agriculture, and technology. The combination of program quality, industry relationships, and cost efficiency makes the ROI case for a Purdue degree among the most defensible of any major university.
Sending Your Student to West Lafayette
Purdue families do not tend to be loud about it in the way that some university alumni communities are. The pride is quieter and more practical. It shows up in the way Purdue graduates talk about their jobs, their preparation, the rigor of what they went through, and what the degree actually opened for them.
Your student chose West Lafayette, in most cases, because something about the program, the value, the aerospace culture, the agricultural history, or the particular kind of excellence Purdue represents aligned with what they were looking for. That alignment tends to deepen across four years. The Boilermaker identity, which might feel abstract at orientation, becomes genuinely personal by junior year.
There will be difficult semesters. There will be nights when the workload feels impossible and your student wonders whether they chose the right place. Those moments are not a sign that they made the wrong choice. They are a sign that they are doing something hard, in the company of people doing equally hard things, in a place that has been building capable people for a long time.

Purdue is the most parent-friendly winter break policy we have found. Students keep their assigned room, can leave belongings in it over break, and return free. There is no application and no extra fee. One thing to flag: because Elliott Hall of Music is closed for construction until January 2027, Purdue is combining its Summer and Fall 2026 commencements into a single December ceremony at Mackey Arena.
Most families are surprised by this one. Residence halls closing means your student cannot stay on campus, so international students, athletes, and anyone with a long flight home need a plan well before December. Confirm current closure dates on the official housing calendar.
Universities do adjust these dates. Always reconfirm on the official academic calendar before booking anything nonrefundable.

What is Purdue University’s graduation rate?
Purdue University graduates 65.1% of students in four years; another 18 points finish within six. About 92.7% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.
16.1 pts above national
19.1 pts above national
11.7 pts above national
Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.

Sending Mail or a Care Package to a Purdue Student
Purdue addresses mail to the specific residence hall your student lives in, using that hall’s real street address and a room or box number.
What you need from your student first: your student’s exact residence hall and room or box number.
Purdue also runs an Amazon Hub locker at the Krach Leadership Center as an alternative pickup point, and discourages shipping anything that needs refrigeration.
Because the exact street address depends on your student’s specific hall, use the College Student Mailing Address Finder and select Purdue to get the verified, hall-by-hall format rather than guessing from a campus map.
