What is the one thing every Southern University and A&M College parent needs to know before move-in?
Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College was established in 1880 in New Orleans and relocated to Baton Rouge in 1914, where it occupies a campus on a bluff above the Mississippi River with one of the most dramatic campus settings of any HBCU in the country.
In the 146 years since its founding, Southern University has grown into the flagship institution of the Southern University System (which also includes Southern University at New Orleans, Southern University at Shreveport, and the Southern University Law Center), a comprehensive land-grant university of approximately 6,000 students, and Louisiana’s only public HBCU.
The Human Jukebox is the defining cultural institution of Southern University athletics, one of the most celebrated and imitated marching bands in HBCU culture, named for its ability to “play any song, anywhere, anytime.” The Human Jukebox’s performances at the Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands, at major sporting events, and at national venues have made Southern University’s marching tradition nationally recognized and the primary cultural expression of the Jaguar identity.
The Bayou Classic (Southern University vs. Grambling State University, played annually at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Thanksgiving weekend) is the most widely attended HBCU football game in the country, drawing more than 60,000 fans to the Superdome for the game and tens of thousands more to the Smoothie King Center for the Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands on Friday night. The Human Jukebox versus Grambling’s World Famed Tiger Marching Band is the most anticipated marching band competition in HBCU culture, and the Bayou Classic weekend is the defining event of the Southern University academic and social calendar.

A Note on Jaguars Identity and Financial Aid
Southern University’s athletic teams are the Jaguars, competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) at the Division I level. The colors are columbia blue and gold. The football program plays at A.W.
Mumford Stadium (a 28,000-seat on-campus facility), and the full SWAC athletic program provides competition against Grambling, Prairie View A&M, Jackson State, Alabama A&M, and the other institutions of the most historically significant HBCU athletic conference in the country.
Financial aid at Southern University is need-based and merit-based through federal, Louisiana state, and institutional programs. Louisiana residents should verify eligibility for the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS). Contact subr.edu/financial-aid for current programs.
Getting to Baton Rouge
Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR) is approximately 15 minutes from the Southern University campus via I-110 north, served by American, Delta, and other carriers from hub markets. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is approximately 80 miles south via I-10, providing more comprehensive national connectivity for families whose home markets connect through New Orleans.
For families driving, I-10 connects Baton Rouge to New Orleans (80 miles east) and Lafayette (60 miles west). I-110 connects to the Southern University campus in northern Baton Rouge. The approach to Baton Rouge from New Orleans on I-10 over the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge (the longest bridge over water in the world in the United States at 18.2 miles) is one of the most dramatic interstate crossings in Louisiana.
What do parents need to know about Southern University and A&M College move-in day 2026?
Southern University’s fall move-in runs in mid-to-late August. Check subr.edu/housing for your student’s building and move-in window.
Baton Rouge in mid-August is hot and humid in the south Louisiana way: temperatures in the low to mid 90s with the dense subtropical Gulf humidity, afternoon thunderstorms arriving with regularity, and the Mississippi River bluff campus in full summer heat.
Southern University runs organized move-in with residential life staff and building-specific unloading areas.
Practical notes:
- Ship boxes ahead. Southern University holds packages.
- After unloading, the Baton Rouge restaurant scene and the campus dining facilities provide first-night options. Raising Cane’s (founded in Baton Rouge in 1996 by LSU student Todd Graves, now a major national chain but still most intensely connected to its Baton Rouge origin) and the Highland Road restaurant corridor provide accessible Baton Rouge dining. For a first night with Louisiana character, Parrain’s Seafood Restaurant (Perkins Road, Baton Rouge, the most celebrated seafood restaurant in the city) is the family visit standard.
The Residence Halls: Where Your Student Might Live
Southern University’s residential system provides on-campus housing for undergraduate students, with freshmen encouraged to live on campus.
Boley Hall, Moore Hall, and the other freshman-designated residence halls provide traditional room configurations for incoming students.
The upperclass residence halls and apartment communities on campus provide housing for continuing students.
The Southern University dining program operates through the campus cafeteria and other dining facilities, with meal plan options for on-campus residents.

Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana, a city of approximately 230,000 people in a metropolitan area of approximately 870,000, with a distinctive character shaped by the Louisiana state government, the petrochemical industry along the Mississippi River (the Baton Rouge-to-New Orleans corridor along I-10 is the most concentrated stretch of petrochemical refinery and processing infrastructure in the United States), the Louisiana State University campus (LSU), and the Creole and Cajun cultural traditions of south Louisiana.

The Magnolia Mound Plantation (Nicholson Drive, Baton Rouge) is one of the most carefully documented antebellum plantation sites in Louisiana, with interpretive programming that addresses the history of the enslaved people who built and maintained the plantation alongside the architectural history of the Creole cottage and its outbuildings.
The LSU Rural Life Museum (Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, on the LSU AgCenter campus) documents the material culture and built environment of rural Louisiana through an extensive collection of 19th-century buildings, agricultural equipment, and craft artifacts that is one of the most significant folk life museums in the South.
The Old State Capitol (North Boulevard, downtown Baton Rouge) is a gothic castle-style building from 1850 that houses exhibits on Louisiana political history and provides one of the most architecturally unusual political history museum settings in the country.
New Orleans (80 miles east via I-10, approximately 1.5 hours) is the cultural capital of Louisiana and the most culturally distinctive city in the United States, accessible as a day trip or overnight destination for Southern University students and families visiting for the Bayou Classic or other occasions.
The Atchafalaya Basin (accessible from the Breaux Bridge area, approximately 60 miles west via I-10) is one of the largest river swamp ecosystems in North America, with bayou boat tours, crawfish etouffee at the Cafe des Amis in Breaux Bridge, and the Cajun music and culture of the Teche country that is accessible as a parent visit extension.

Southern University refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
The refund percentage is tied to the official withdrawal date the Registrar’s Office records, and an unofficial or late filed withdrawal can be dated back only to the semester midpoint, which can forfeit both the tuition refund and part of the student’s financial aid.
Refund schedule: Before classes begin: 90% refund. First day of class through day 17 of the semester: 75% refund. Day 18 through day 24: 50% refund. Day 25 through the end of the semester: no refund. Summer sessions run the same four tier structure on a compressed timeline.. Confirmed via the official Southern University refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.
Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.
Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.
GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.
Residential freshmen with fewer than 24 college credit hours are barred from registering a car at Southern University.
A waiver requires documented extenuating circumstances (employment, a medical condition, a disabled parent needing transportation); “simple convenience” and parental permission are explicitly listed as reasons that get denied. Applications open only one week before the semester starts.
Freshman permit cost: $45/semester (2023-24 rate, not confirmed current for 2026-27). Confirmed via the official Southern University parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.
Southern University’s Homecoming and the SWAC athletics schedule provide the primary athletics events for families. The Bayou Classic (Thanksgiving weekend, New Orleans Caesars Superdome) is the most significant event in the Southern University calendar and the most widely attended HBCU football game in the country. Check subr.edu/athletics for current Family Weekend and home game schedules.
Hotel strategy: Baton Rouge has extensive hotel inventory at all price ranges along the I-10 corridor, the College Drive corridor, and the downtown Baton Rouge waterfront. For the Bayou Classic, New Orleans hotels should be booked many weeks ahead for Thanksgiving weekend.
How can parents support their Southern University and A&M College student’s mental health?
Southern University’s Counseling Services provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and psychiatric referrals.
The Baton Rouge community context, including the area’s significant petrochemical industry health considerations, the flood vulnerability of the south Louisiana landscape (the Baton Rouge area experienced significant flooding in August 2016, a 500-year flood event that affected tens of thousands of residents), and the economic inequality of north Baton Rouge (the Southern University campus sits in one of the economically most challenged corridors in the city) are all real dimensions of the student experience that the counseling center is prepared to address.
The Human Jukebox and Jaguar athletics culture creates a community of belonging for many Southern University students, and the counseling center’s programming builds on this community strength.

What is Southern University and A&M College’s graduation rate?
Southern University and A&M College graduates 10% of students in four years; another 17.1 points finish within six. About 60.3% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.
39 pts below national
36.9 pts below national
20.7 pts below national
Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
