What is the one thing every Spelman College parent needs to know before move-in?

Spelman College was founded in 1881 in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta by Sophia Packard and Harriet Giles, two New England educators who traveled to the post-Reconstruction South with the specific mission of educating Black women at a moment in American history when almost no institution in the country was willing to do so. In the 145 years since, Spelman has become one of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the United States, producing more Black women who go on to earn doctoral degrees than any other institution in America, and building an alumnae network that includes Alice Walker, who received her undergraduate degree at Spelman before transferring to Sarah Lawrence, Marian Wright Edelman, who graduated from Spelman before earning her law degree from Yale and founding the Children’s Defense Fund, Bernice King, who earned her undergraduate degree at Spelman before becoming a civil rights leader in her own right, and Keshia Knight Pulliam, whose visibility reflects the breadth of the Spelman alumnae achievement across professional and cultural life.

Spelman is not simply an HBCU. It is a highly selective liberal arts women’s college with admission rates that rival or exceed selective private colleges nationally, a commitment to academic rigor and intellectual formation that reflects the founders’ conviction that Black women deserved the very best of what American higher education could offer, and a campus culture built around the specific power of being a Black woman at an institution that has always centered that identity rather than accommodated it. The Sisters Chapel. The Honor Code. Founders Day in April, when the full weight of 145 years of Spelman history is made present in a single ceremony on the quad.

Spelman is also the anchor institution of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Consortium, one of the most extraordinary concentrations of HBCU academic resources in the world. The AUC includes Morehouse College (the men’s liberal arts partner across the street), Clark Atlanta University (the research university component), Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Interdenominational Theological Center. Spelman students can cross-register at Morehouse and Clark Atlanta, have access to the Robert W. Woodruff Library (shared among the AUC institutions and housing one of the most significant collections of African American historical materials in the country), and live within the AUC’s 20-square-block campus, which sits five miles southwest of downtown Atlanta in the Vine City and English Avenue neighborhoods that have been at the center of Black Atlanta life since Reconstruction.

For parents sending a daughter to Spelman: she is joining one of the most selective, historically significant, and academically rigorous women’s colleges in America, at an institution that has been proving what Black women can achieve for 145 years.

What makes Spelman College’s campus culture unique?

Spelman’s students are the Jaguars in athletics, competing in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The colors are blue and white. Spelman’s athletic program is Division II, and the college has invested in its athletic culture as an expression of Spelman women’s full capability and presence.

But athletics are not the defining social institution at Spelman in the way they might be at a large research university. The defining institutions of Spelman life are the honor societies, the academic departments, the campus organizations, the sorority chapters of the Divine Nine (particularly Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, which have deep roots in the AUC and Spelman specifically), the chapel community, and the alumnae network.

The AUC Social Calendar is significant. Spelman women’s social lives extend across the consortium, with Morehouse homecoming, the AUC Step Shows, and the formal and informal gatherings among students from Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and the other AUC institutions creating a social ecosystem that is specific to the AUC and unlike anything at any other institution in the country. AUC Homecoming in the fall is the defining collective event of the consortium year, drawing alumni from all member institutions for a multi-day celebration that extends from the AUC campus into the surrounding Atlanta neighborhoods.

Getting to Atlanta

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is the busiest airport in the world by passenger volume, approximately 20 minutes south of the Spelman campus via I-85 and I-20.

ATL has direct service from virtually every major domestic market and comprehensive international connections, served by Delta (ATL is Delta’s primary hub), American, Southwest, United, Spirit, Frontier, and most domestic and many international carriers. Families from anywhere in the continental United States can reach Atlanta with a direct or one-stop connection, and the logistics of getting to and from Spelman are among the most straightforward of any residential college because ATL’s size and connectivity are simply unmatched.

The MARTA rail system connects ATL to the Five Points station in downtown Atlanta, with connections to the Vine City station (one stop west of Five Points on the Green and Blue lines), which is a 10-minute walk from the Spelman campus. Families comfortable with rail travel can reach campus from ATL without a car. Rideshare from ATL to Spelman is typically 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic, and I-20 westbound from the airport to the AUC exit provides the primary driving route.

What do parents need to know about Spelman College move-in day 2026?

Spelman’s fall move-in runs in mid-to-late August, with specific dates and arrival windows assigned by residence hall. Check spelman.edu/housing for your student’s exact window. Atlanta in August is hot and humid, with temperatures regularly reaching the low to mid-90s with high humidity.

Move-in is physically demanding in the Atlanta August heat, and the compact campus with limited adjacent parking means that following the housing office’s move-in logistics instructions precisely is essential.

Spelman runs organized move-in with student volunteer crews and designated unloading zones per residence hall. The campus is walkable in scale, but the distance between parking and some residential buildings requires planning.

Practical notes:

  • Atlanta August heat is significant. Begin early, bring cold drinks and electrolytes, and take breaks.
  • The MARTA option (Vine City station, 10-minute walk) is practical for families arriving at ATL without a rental car and shipping most belongings ahead.
  • Ship boxes ahead. Spelman holds packages, and reducing what needs to be carried through Atlanta August heat is strongly worth the shipping cost.
  • After unloading, the West End neighborhood adjacent to the AUC, the restaurants along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, and the broader southwest Atlanta restaurant scene provide family dinner options. The Paschal’s restaurant on MLK Drive, a legendary Atlanta institution since 1947 where civil rights leaders organized over meals during the movement, is within 10 minutes of campus and essential for any Spelman family visit.

The Residence Halls: Where Your Student Might Live

Spelman’s residential system is a traditional women’s residential college model: the campus is fully residential for freshmen, with a strong expectation that first-year Spelman women live on campus and fully engage in the residential community that is central to the Spelman experience.

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Hall is one of the most storied freshman residence halls on campus, a traditional dormitory that has housed generations of Spelman women and carries the weight of the institution’s history in its architecture and community culture. The hall is named for Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, whose philanthropic support was instrumental in Spelman’s early development.

Tapley Hall and MacVicar Hall are additional traditional-style residence halls in the main campus residential cluster, providing the community bathroom and shared-room configurations that support the first-year community building the college prioritizes.

Howard-Harreld Hall is a residential hall in the campus center area that houses upperclassmen and first-year students in a traditional dormitory configuration with strong community programming.

The Spelman College Suites and newer residential facilities on campus reflect investment in updated residential amenities while maintaining the community structure central to the Spelman model. Upperclassmen who remain on campus benefit from the AUC’s residential options, including housing managed through the consortium for advanced students.

Many Spelman upperclasswomen move to the surrounding Atlanta neighborhoods after freshman year, including the West End, Vine City, and the broader southwest and midtown Atlanta apartment market. Atlanta’s scale and the AUC’s location mean that the range of off-campus housing options accessible to Spelman students is among the broadest of any women’s college in the country.

How much does Spelman College cost? Tuition, financial aid, and scholarships for 2026-27

Spelman’s tuition is significantly below peer selective private liberal arts colleges nationally, reflecting the college’s mission commitment to providing access to elite liberal arts education. The college’s UNCF membership and HBCU status provide access to a range of institutional, foundation, and federal aid programs.

Expense Cost
Tuition and Fees ~$30,000 (verify at spelman.edu)
Room and Board ~$16,000-$18,000 (verify at spelman.edu)
Books and Supplies ~$1,200 (verify at spelman.edu)
Personal and Transportation ~$3,000 (verify at spelman.edu)
Estimated Total ~$50,000-$52,000 (verify at spelman.edu)

Spelman’s scholarship and financial aid programs include the Spelman Presidential Scholarship, departmental and merit awards through the STEM programs, and the range of UNCF scholarships available to students at member institutions. The Gates Scholarship, the Ron Brown Scholar Program, and other national scholarships targeted at Black students have historically produced significant awards for Spelman women. Spelman participates in the FAFSA process for federal aid, and the financial aid office administers need-based and merit aid in combination.

Families whose students are considering Spelman should also investigate the AUC Financial Aid resources, HBCU-specific private scholarships from foundations including the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the United Negro College Fund directly, and the range of corporate and foundation scholarships that have historically prioritized Spelman women.

If there is a gap between available aid and total costs, private student loan rates are worth comparing carefully. SoFi is consistently competitive on rates for families with strong credit. Always exhaust federal loan options first.

Atlanta and the AUC Neighborhood: What Parents Need to Know

Atlanta is one of the most culturally, historically, and economically significant cities in the American South, and Spelman’s location in the heart of Black Atlanta provides parent visit access to a concentration of history and culture that is specifically relevant to the Spelman experience.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights in downtown Atlanta (20 minutes from campus by rideshare) provides one of the most powerful museum experiences in the South, with exhibits that connect the history of the American civil rights movement to contemporary human rights struggles globally. The museum includes the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection and is directly relevant to the Spelman mission and community.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood of Atlanta (15 minutes from campus) includes Dr. King’s birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as co-pastor, and the King Center (established by Coretta Scott King in 1968), which houses Dr. King’s crypt and archives. For Spelman families, this concentration of civil rights history five miles from campus is not background context; it is the living landscape that shaped Spelman’s institutional identity through the movement years when Spelman students participated in Atlanta sit-ins and marches alongside Morehouse students and other AUC community members.

The West End neighborhood immediately adjacent to the AUC has been a center of Black Atlanta life for generations, and the restaurants, shops, and community spaces along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Lee Street connect the AUC to the neighborhood that surrounds it. The West End is also home to a growing arts and food scene that reflects Atlanta’s broader reinvestment in its historic Black neighborhoods.

Paschal’s Restaurant on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (within 10 minutes of campus) opened in 1947 and was a gathering place for civil rights leaders during the movement years. Ralph David Abernathy, Andrew Young, Julian Bond, and Dr. King himself met at Paschal’s during the Atlanta campaign. Dining there with your student during a Spelman parent visit is an experience that contextualizes the institution in a way that no campus tour can replicate.

The Beltline and Ponce City Market (20 minutes from campus by rideshare) represent Atlanta’s most celebrated recent urban development: the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile loop of parks, trails, and transit being built on a former railroad corridor around the city’s core, with Ponce City Market (a converted 1926 Sears warehouse, now a mixed-use market, restaurant, and office space) as its anchor destination. The BeltLine’s Eastside Trail, with the food hall at Ponce City Market, the restaurants along Krog Street Market, and the arts venues along the corridor, is the defining family visit destination in Atlanta.

For parent visit dining: Paschal’s (historic, essential, MLK Dr), Slutty Vegan (plant-based, nationally known, multiple locations, beloved in the AUC community), Poor Calvin’s (contemporary Asian-Southern fusion, Midtown, excellent), Watershed on Peachtree (Southern, Midtown, celebrated), and Staplehouse (James Beard Award-winning, Inman Park, exceptional for a special occasion dinner).

Tuition Refund if Withdrawing

Spelman refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.

Because the refund is calculated as a straight percentage of days remaining rather than fixed weekly tiers, it shrinks every single day a student stays enrolled, so filing the official withdrawal with the Registrar promptly makes a real dollar difference, and financial aid is separately subject to federal and state repayment rules on top of this institutional calculation.

Refund schedule: Spelman refunds tuition and fees on a pro rata basis equal to the percentage of the semester still remaining, but only within the first 60% of the term. Once the percentage of remaining days drops to 40% or less, no refund of institutional charges is given at all.. Confirmed via the official Spelman refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.

Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.

Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.

GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.

Freshman Car & Parking

On-campus first-year students are not permitted to have cars anywhere on campus or in the parking deck at Spelman.

The ban is tied to residency status, not class year alone; an off-campus (commuter) first-year is allowed a car during the day but barred from overnight parking on campus.

Freshman permit cost: not applicable for on-campus first-years; commuter students pay $300/semester. Confirmed via the official Spelman parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.

Spelman’s most important family-connected event is Founders Day, celebrated in April each year to commemorate the college’s founding on April 11, 1881.

The Founders Day convocation is the most solemn and most moving ceremony in the Spelman calendar, a formal gathering in Sisters Chapel at which the weight of the institution’s history is made present in music, address, and community. Families who attend Founders Day understand Spelman in a way that no other campus visit can produce. If you can attend only one Spelman event in four years, attend Founders Day.

AUC Homecoming in the fall is the other defining collective event. Check spelman.edu and the AUC consortium calendar for current year dates. The AUC Homecoming draws alumni from Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and the broader HBCU community for a multi-day event that includes performances, step shows, formal balls, the Greek plaza events, and the full expression of AUC consortium culture. Atlanta’s size means that hotel inventory near the AUC is not as constrained as at smaller university cities, but AUC Homecoming still creates booking demand that rewards advance planning.

Hotel strategy: Atlanta has enormous hotel inventory, and parent visit weekends at Spelman do not typically create the acute scarcity that smaller college towns experience. That said, Atlanta hotel rates can be high, and AUC Homecoming and Founders Day create real demand. Hotels near the Vine City MARTA station (Omni Atlanta at CNN Center, downtown properties near Five Points, hotels in Midtown near the Arts Center MARTA station) provide good transit connectivity to campus. Book Founders Day and Homecoming weekends 6 to 8 weeks ahead to secure the best rates.

How can parents support their Spelman College student’s mental health?

Spelman’s Counseling Center provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and psychiatric referrals for enrolled students.

The Spelman mental health context is specific and worth understanding: the psychological reality of being a high-achieving Black woman in America, dealing with the intersection of excellence and the external pressures that the dominant culture continues to place on Black women in professional and academic settings, is a recognized focus of Spelman’s counseling programming. The “strong Black woman” archetype, which asks Black women to suppress vulnerability and present as perpetually capable regardless of internal experience, is a documented source of mental health burden, and Spelman’s counseling center has programming that directly addresses this dynamic.

The intensity of the Spelman academic environment, the expectations of the institution and the alumnae community, and the experience of being on a predominantly Black campus surrounded by the broader Atlanta context that includes both extraordinary Black achievement and persistent racial inequity are all part of the specific context of Spelman’s mental health environment. Counseling services are a resource your student should know is available, culturally competent, and not a sign of weakness.

Spelman’s Academic Strengths

Spelman is a liberal arts college, and the breadth and rigor of the liberal arts core are the foundation of the academic experience.

Every Spelman student engages with the African Diaspora and the World (ADW) course, a two-semester intellectual foundation that centers the history, literature, and intellectual traditions of the African diaspora as the lens through which students encounter the full range of academic disciplines. The ADW is the signature Spelman academic experience and is unlike any comparable course at any other institution in the country.

The sciences at Spelman are a particular point of institutional pride and national recognition. Spelman produces more Black women who go on to earn doctoral degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics than any other college in the United States. The Comprehensive Science Research Building houses state-of-the-art laboratories, and the partnerships with neighboring Georgia Tech (which shares the west Atlanta campus boundary, approximately five miles from the AUC), with Emory University (eight miles northeast), and with the CDC (headquartered in Atlanta) provide research access and pipeline opportunities that far exceed what the college’s enrollment size would suggest. The NASA-funded programs, the biomedical research partnerships, and the NSF HBCU-UP grants that have funded STEM infrastructure at Spelman over the past two decades reflect national investment in what Spelman’s STEM programs produce.

The arts and humanities at Spelman are anchored by the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, which houses one of the most significant collections of art by African and African American women in the world and provides curatorial and research access that shapes the college’s visual arts culture across departments. The Department of English at Spelman, whose alumnae include writers, scholars, and editors who have shaped Black literary culture, and the Departments of Sociology, Economics, and Political Science provide the liberal arts framework for students pursuing careers in law, public policy, social justice, and social science research.

Pre-health is among the most prominent student trajectories at Spelman, reflecting both the college’s science strength and the alumnae culture of professional achievement. The pre-health advising program, the relationships with Morehouse School of Medicine (located on the AUC campus), and the broader Atlanta hospital and health system infrastructure create a pre-health pipeline that places Spelman near the top of any list of HBCUs producing Black women who go on to medical school.

The cross-registration arrangement with Morehouse and Clark Atlanta allows Spelman students to take courses across the AUC consortium, expanding the range of available coursework substantially. The AUC also gives Spelman students access to Morehouse’s programs in business, Clark Atlanta’s graduate programs, and the full intellectual community of 12,000 students across the consortium.

The Sisters Chapel on a Tuesday morning when the full choir sings. The African Diaspora and the World course in the fall semester of freshman year. Founders Day in April with the full weight of 1881 made present in a single convocation.

Alice Walker and Marian Wright Edelman and Bernice King and the thousands of Spelman women whose names are less famous but whose lives are no less significant to what the college has built.

Spelman does not merely educate Black women. It has been proving, for 145 years, what Black women are capable of when an institution is built entirely around their intellectual, professional, and personal formation. The alumnae who go on to earn doctoral degrees and run hospitals and argue before the Supreme Court and write novels and lead civil rights organizations are not exceptions to what Spelman produces. They are the point.

What is Spelman College’s graduation rate?

Spelman College graduates 69.5% of students in four years; another 9 points finish within six. About 94.1% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.

Four-year graduation69.5%

20.5 pts above national

Six-year graduation78.5%

14.5 pts above national

First-year retention94.1%

13.1 pts above national

Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
