What is the one thing every St. Olaf College parent needs to know before move-in?

St. Olaf College was founded in 1874 in Northfield, Minnesota, by Norwegian Lutheran immigrants who established the college as an expression of their community’s commitment to education and faith in the upper Midwest.

The Norwegian Lutheran heritage is not merely historical: it shapes the campus architecture (the Bø Chapel and the Norwegian-influenced design elements across the campus), the civic culture (the emphasis on service, community, and personal integrity that characterizes the St. Olaf ethos), and the musical culture that has made St. Olaf’s choral program one of the most celebrated in the world.

The St. Olaf Choir, founded in 1912, is one of the most distinguished collegiate choral ensembles in the United States and has performed at Carnegie Hall, on international tours, and at presidential inaugurations. The St. Olaf Christmas Festival, broadcast nationally each December on PBS stations across the country and performed annually in Northfield and in Minneapolis, is one of the most watched choral performance broadcasts in American television and has been a defining feature of the St. Olaf identity since the radio era. The broader music program at St. Olaf includes more than 500 student musicians in multiple ensembles, making music one of the largest and most active curricular programs at the college.

St. Olaf is located in Northfield, Minnesota, one mile north of Carleton College, creating one of the most unusual higher education concentrations in the United States: two nationally recognized liberal arts colleges (St. Olaf with approximately 3,000 students, Carleton with approximately 2,100) in a town of 20,000 people, sharing a community, a library consortium, a local transportation system, and an academic atmosphere that is richer than either college would produce alone. Students at both colleges cross-register, share events, and date each other with a frequency that reflects the proximity and the shared intellectual culture.

St. Olaf is a member of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM), the same consortium to which Carleton belongs, providing additional cross-registration and collaborative program access.

A Note on Oles Identity and Financial Aid

St. Olaf’s athletic teams are the Oles (short for Olaf), competing in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) at the Division III level. The colors are black and gold. St.

Olaf’s MIAC athletics include football, hockey, basketball, and the full range of Division III sports, and the Ole-Carleton rivalry (in most MIAC sports) is one of the most genuinely contested college rivalries in Minnesota, given the proximity and the cultural contrast between the two institutions.

St. Olaf’s financial aid program meets demonstrated financial need for admitted students, with aid packages designed to make the college accessible across the full range of income levels. Check stolaf.edu/offices/financial-aid for the current aid commitment and whether a no-loan pledge is in effect for the entering class. The CSS Profile may be required in addition to the FAFSA; verify at stolaf.edu.

Getting to Northfield

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is approximately 40 minutes north of Northfield via I-35W or MN-3, served by Delta (MSP is a major Delta hub), Sun Country, American, United, Southwest, and most major domestic and international carriers. The comprehensive MSP hub service makes Northfield accessible from virtually every domestic market and many international origins.

For families driving, I-35 connects Northfield to the Twin Cities in the north and to Iowa and points south. The approach to Northfield from the north via MN-3 through the Minnesota River Valley farmland is the quintessential upper Midwest drive. St. Olaf’s campus sits on a hill on the north side of Northfield, visible from the highway approach.

Amtrak does not serve Northfield, but the Minneapolis Union Station connection (on the Empire Builder) provides access for families arriving from those corridors, with a connecting shuttle or rideshare to Northfield.

What do parents need to know about St. Olaf College move-in day 2026?

St. Olaf’s fall move-in runs in late August, with specific dates and arrival windows per residence hall. Check stolaf.edu/offices/registrar/residentiallife for your student’s building and move-in window.

Northfield in late August is warm and humid in the Minnesota late-summer way: temperatures in the low to mid-80s, the surrounding farmland at its most dense and green, and the St. Olaf hilltop campus visible from the MN-3 approach.

St. Olaf runs organized move-in with orientation volunteer crews and building-specific unloading areas.

Practical notes:

  • The St. Olaf campus sits on a hill, with some residence halls requiring attention to the unloading logistics of a hillside campus. Follow housing instructions.
  • Ship boxes ahead. St. Olaf holds packages.
  • After unloading, downtown Northfield on Division Street has good restaurants for a family dinner. The Contented Cow pub (in a historic brick building on the Cannon River, a Northfield institution) and Hogan Brothers Acoustic Cafe (excellent coffee) are the primary downtown recommendations.

The Residence Halls: Where Your Student Might Live

St. Olaf’s residential system houses the large majority of students on campus, with residential living required for freshmen and strongly encouraged for upperclassmen.

Mohn Hall and Ellingson Hall are the primary freshman-designated residence halls, housing incoming students in traditional double-room configurations with community bathroom access and proximity to the main campus dining facilities at Stav Hall.

Kittelsby Hall, Rand Hall, and other residence halls provide a range of housing options for upperclassmen, including suite-style configurations and the larger dormitory buildings that accommodate significant portions of the student body.

The campus residence halls are organized around neighborhoods of buildings that create smaller community clusters within the larger residential system, reflecting St. Olaf’s investment in residential community as a dimension of the educational experience.

Stav Hall, the primary St. Olaf dining facility, is among the most celebrated college dining programs in the midwest, with a reputation for quality, variety, and the sourcing from Minnesota’s agricultural economy that reflects the college’s institutional values. The dining program’s quality is a feature of the St. Olaf experience that alumni consistently describe with specific enthusiasm.

Northfield and the Upper Midwest: What Parents Need to Know

Northfield is a small city of approximately 20,000 people with two nationally significant liberal arts colleges, a historic downtown on the Cannon River, and a community character shaped by the presence of both colleges and by the surrounding agricultural landscape of southern Minnesota.

The St. Olaf campus rewards extended exploration during a parent visit: the Bø Chapel (the center of the campus’s spiritual life and one of the architecturally significant buildings in Minnesota), the Steensland Library, and the views across the Cannon River valley from the hilltop are the primary campus circuit.

Downtown Northfield on Division Street has the Contented Cow pub (in a historic brick building, a Northfield institution for decades, excellent for lunch or dinner), Hogan Brothers Acoustic Cafe (excellent coffee and live music), and the independent retail that serves both college communities.

The 1876 Raid Museum preserves the site of the famous James-Younger gang bank robbery attempt at the First National Bank of Northfield, in which Northfield citizens repelled the raid. The First National Bank building (now the Northfield Historical Society Museum) is on Bridge Square, and the Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration in September is a significant Northfield community event.

Carleton College is one mile south of the St. Olaf campus, and the relationship between the two institutions is a defining feature of Northfield that parents should understand: students from both colleges share the town, cross-register in each other’s courses, and constitute a combined intellectual community of approximately 5,000 students in a town of 20,000. The Ole-Carleton social and athletic dynamic is one of the most distinctive features of the Northfield experience for students and families.

Minneapolis is 40 miles north, providing full metropolitan access: the Minneapolis Institute of Art (free general admission), the Walker Art Center, the Guthrie Theater, and the Minneapolis food scene.

For parent visit dining: Contented Cow (Northfield, atmospheric and reliable), Hogan Brothers (Northfield, coffee and conversation), and Minneapolis for a day trip north: Spoon and Stable (Warehouse District, nationally acclaimed) or Midtown Global Market.

Tuition Refund if Withdrawing

St. Olaf refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.

Room and tuition run on very different clocks: room charges drop to zero the moment classes start while tuition still has an 80% and then a 40% window, so a family withdrawing in week two can lose the entire room charge while still recovering 40% of tuition.

Refund schedule: Tuition: 100% refund if withdrawn before the first day of class, 80% refund through the 10th day of class, 40% refund within two weeks after the 10th day, no tuition refund after that. Room: 100% refund only if withdrawn before the first day of class, no refund once classes begin. Board (meal plan): 100% before the first day, 75% within the first 3 weeks, 50% within the first 5 weeks, no refund after week 5.. Confirmed via the official St. Olaf refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.

Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.

Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.

GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.

Freshman Car & Parking

First-year students are generally ineligible for a parking permit at St. Olaf.

The only exceptions are living 250+ miles from campus or a disability-related need. Even eligible first-years aren’t guaranteed a permit; applications are processed first-come, first-served with priority by class year, so freshmen are last in line.

Freshman permit cost: not published; cost is only shown after a permit application is approved through the Flex Port portal. Confirmed via the official St. Olaf parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.

St. Olaf’s Family Weekend is in the fall; check stolaf.edu/students for current year dates. The MIAC athletics schedule provides the fall sports draw, and the Ole-Carleton rivalry events are the most emotionally charged of the year. The St.

Olaf music calendar is worth checking before any parent visit: the choral ensembles, the orchestra, and the chamber music groups perform throughout the academic year, and attending a St. Olaf Choir performance is among the most distinctive experiences that a liberal arts college parent visit can offer anywhere in the country.

Hotel strategy: Northfield has limited hotel inventory. The Archer House River Inn (on Division Street, downtown Northfield, most atmospheric option, a historic 1877 hotel) and the chain hotels on MN-3 near Northfield provide local inventory. Minneapolis hotels (40 miles north) provide the broadest backup options. Book Family Weekend and major event weekends 6 to 8 weeks ahead.

How can parents support their St. Olaf College student’s mental health?

St. Olaf’s Counseling and Wellness Center provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and psychiatric referrals. The Minnesota winter, which begins in November and extends through April with significant cold, snow, and limited daylight, is a genuine mental health challenge for students from warmer climates. St.

Olaf’s faith-based community character, while deeply supportive for many students, is also a dimension that students whose religious identity is different from the ELCA Lutheran heritage should understand before arrival: the chapel programs, the required religion and biblical studies courses, and the faith community emphasis are genuine features of the St. Olaf environment.

The music program’s demanding schedule is a mental health factor for students in the music ensembles: the rehearsal and performance commitments of the St. Olaf Choir and other major ensembles are substantial, and the balance between music commitments and academic work requires intentional management.

St. Olaf’s Academic Strengths

The General Education requirements at St. Olaf reflect the liberal arts college curriculum organized around a broad engagement with the humanistic, scientific, and artistic traditions that constitutes the St. Olaf understanding of education.

Two requirements are specifically distinctive: a Biblical/Theological Studies requirement (reflecting the ELCA Lutheran heritage) and a Christian Vocation requirement, which reflect the college’s conviction that questions of meaning, purpose, and ethical life are central to a genuine liberal education. These requirements are approached as academic courses rather than devotional exercises, but their presence distinguishes St. Olaf from its non-denominational MIAC and ACM peers.

The music program is the most nationally recognized academic program at St. Olaf, and the breadth and depth of the music curriculum is exceptional for an institution of the college’s size. The St. Olaf Choir (the premier ensemble), the Viking Chorus, the Manitou Singers, the Chapel Choir, the St. Olaf Band, and the St. Olaf Orchestra provide ensemble opportunities at multiple levels of selectivity and commitment. The annual Christmas Festival represents the highest expression of the music program, but the regular performance calendar throughout the academic year reflects the music department’s investment in performance as an ongoing community event.

The mathematics department at St. Olaf is nationally recognized as one of the most effective undergraduate mathematics programs in the country, with a faculty-to-student engagement and a track record of producing mathematics PhD students that is disproportionate to the college’s size. The mathematics and statistics programs attract students from across the country specifically because of this reputation.

The chemistry, biology, and physics departments are strong, with undergraduate research opportunities and a pre-professional health preparation track that produces competitive medical school applicants. The Regents Hall of Natural and Mathematical Sciences provides research facilities that support the science curriculum.

The economics, political science, and history departments reflect the strength of the social science curriculum at St. Olaf, and the college’s off-campus study programs (through the ACM consortium and St. Olaf’s own international programs) provide study abroad access in more than 30 countries.

St. Olaf was founded by Norwegian immigrants who believed that education and faith and community were not separate things but expressions of a single human commitment. 150 years later the choir is still singing, the math department is still producing doctoral students, and the Cannon River still runs between the two colleges that have defined this small Minnesota town for generations.

What is St. Olaf College’s graduation rate?

St. Olaf College graduates 77.4% of students in four years; another 6.6 points finish within six. About 92.2% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.

Four-year graduation77.4%

28.4 pts above national

Six-year graduation84%

20 pts above national

First-year retention92.2%

11.2 pts above national

Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
