UMass Amherst Parents Weekend Travel Guide 2026
UMass calls it Family Weekend, and it runs October 2 to 4, 2026 in Amherst, Massachusetts. Saturday is a home football Saturday against Eastern Michigan, and the Pioneer Valley has fewer hotel rooms than a weekend like this needs. Lodging is the first decision to make.

When is UMass Parents Weekend 2026?
UMass Amherst Family Weekend 2026 is October 2 to 4, 2026. UMass writes it as “Save the date for Family Weekend 2026, October 2-4.” Registration is open, and the university says a late registration fee is added starting September 15.
Most families search for this as “UMass parents weekend.” UMass itself calls it Family Weekend, so that is the phrase to use on the official pages and at check-in.
UMass states that a late registration fee is added starting September 15. If you already know you are coming, registering before that date is the cheapest version of this trip. The fee is non-refundable either way, which UMass also states plainly.
What registration costs and covers
| Item | What UMass says |
|---|---|
| Adult registration | $40 per person |
| Children under 12 | $10 per person |
| Late fee | Added starting September 15 |
| Refunds | Non-refundable, regardless of the reason |
| Does your student register? | No. Students do not need to be registered with their families |
| What the fee covers | Registration logistics, materials, refreshments, wagon rides, performances, and other activities |
| Check-in | Friday 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon |
UMass describes the weekend as Family Fest check-in, campus tours, informative sessions on student resources and career development, and PondFire, a campus tradition. As of early September the university had not yet posted a timed schedule, so confirm individual event times on the official page before you build a plan around any one of them.
Where to stay for UMass Parents Weekend
This is the part of the weekend that is genuinely constrained. Amherst has limited hotel rooms for a town of its size. The realistic options sit in Northampton, Hadley, and Holyoke, with Springfield as the overflow market when the valley fills up. Add a home football game and foliage season on top of that and the good rooms go early.
How the lodging geography actually works
| Where | Distance from campus | Why you would stay there |
|---|---|---|
| Amherst | Walking distance to campus | Closest, smallest inventory, books first |
| Hadley | Route 9 east, a few minutes | Most of the chain hotels, plus Target, Walmart and Best Buy if your student needs something |
| Northampton | Route 9 west, about 10 minutes | The best evening in the valley. Hotel Northampton on King Street is the comfortable option |
| Holyoke | South on I-91 | Additional inventory when Amherst and Northampton are gone |
| Springfield | About 25 miles south on I-91 | Largest hotel market in the area, and the fallback when the valley is full |
Booking it
There is no single search box that covers this valley well, so work the table above from the top down. Call or book the Amherst options first, then Hadley, then Northampton. If all three are gone, Springfield has the depth and is a 30-minute drive. Booking direct with the property is worth a phone call here, because small New England hotels often hold rooms back from the aggregators on a weekend like this one.
UMass also links its own visitor information page, which lists places to stay near campus.
Flying or driving in
Bradley is the practical airport for most out-of-state families, and almost everyone rents a car once they land. Neither of those gets cheaper by waiting.
UMass vs. Eastern Michigan: the Family Weekend game
UMass hosts Eastern Michigan on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. UMass Athletics labels this game Family Weekend on its own schedule, alongside Band Day. It is a Mid-American Conference game.
Kickoff was still listed as TBD in early September. Check the official schedule before you book a Friday night or a Sunday morning flight, because a night kickoff changes the whole shape of Saturday.
Single-game tickets were on sale from $25 through UMass Athletics as of early September, which is unusually reasonable for a Family Weekend game and is the reason to start there rather than on a resale site.
UMass Athletics is also promoting a 2026 UMass Family Weekend ticket package for this game. That is an official UMass offer, not an affiliate link, and it is the first place to look.
If the school allotment is gone by the time you look, the resale market is the backup. Prices there move with demand, so check both before you buy.
One more reason to be in the stadium: the UMass marching band, the “Power and Class of New England,” is one of the most celebrated college marching bands in the country, and October 3 is Band Day.
Family Weekend is not Homecoming
These are two different weekends at UMass and families mix them up every year.
| Weekend | Date | Opponent |
|---|---|---|
| Family Weekend Yours | Saturday, October 3, 2026 | Eastern Michigan |
| Homecoming Alumni | Saturday, October 10, 2026 | Miami (OH) |
If you booked a room for the wrong October Saturday, this is the moment to fix it. Both weekends draw crowds into the same small hotel market.
A suggested weekend plan
Built around what UMass has confirmed. Adjust once the timed schedule and the kickoff are published.
- 3 to 7 p.m. Family Weekend check-in. This is the window UMass publishes, and doing it Friday means Saturday starts with the game rather than a line.
- Evening. Dinner in Amherst center, a 10-minute walk from campus, or drive 10 minutes west to Northampton if you want the better restaurant night.
- Before bed. Confirm Saturday’s kickoff time. It changes the whole day.
- 9 a.m. to noon. Second check-in window if you arrive Saturday morning.
- Morning. Campus tour or an informative session. UMass is a big campus and the residential areas are genuinely spread out, so this is worth doing on foot with your student.
- Kickoff, time TBD. UMass vs. Eastern Michigan at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Band Day.
- After the game. PondFire is the campus tradition UMass names for this weekend. Confirm the time on the official page.
- Morning. Breakfast with your student, then the practical errand: Route 9 east to Hadley for whatever they have realized they need.
- Before you go. Atkins Farms Country Market on Bay Road, for cider doughnuts and the New England farm market experience, is the right last stop in early October.
Getting to Amherst
By air
Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, serving the Hartford and Springfield area, is roughly 35 miles south of campus and is the most convenient option for most out-of-state families. It is smaller and easier to navigate, with reasonable rental car availability. Boston Logan (BOS) is the alternative at roughly 90 miles east. Logan has more flight options but adds real drive time, particularly on fall weekends when I-90 westbound slows down.
By car
From Boston, take I-90 west (the Massachusetts Turnpike) to the Springfield area, then north on I-91 and east on Route 9 into Amherst. Budget about two hours under normal conditions and more on a foliage weekend, which this is. From New York and the south, I-91 north from Hartford to Northampton is straightforward and genuinely scenic along the Connecticut River.
By bus and train
Peter Pan Bus Lines runs service from New York City, Boston, and Springfield directly into Amherst, which makes UMass one of the more bus-accessible public flagships in the country. Amtrak’s Vermonter stops in Springfield, about 25 miles south, with a bus or rideshare connection to campus from there.
Parking and getting around campus
UMass Amherst is a large campus and the residential areas, Northeast, Orchard Hill, Southwest, Sylvan and Central, are meaningfully spread out. Before you arrive, look up the specific residential area your student lives in rather than just the hall name. The campus map at maps.umass.edu is accurate and worth having on your phone.
Amherst town center has limited parking, so if you are eating downtown on Friday night, plan to walk from campus or arrive early. Game-day parking is run by UMass Athletics and is separate from general campus parking, so check the athletics site rather than assuming a weekday lot rule applies.
Game-day essentials
Two things routinely catch families out at an early-October game in New England: the temperature drop after sunset if the kickoff is late, and a phone that dies before halftime because it has been taking photos since the campus tour.
- Layers, including something warmer than you think you need for a possible night kickoff
- A rain shell. Early October in the valley is unpredictable
- Shoes you can walk a large campus in
- A charged power bank
- Cash for the farm market on the way out
- Your student’s building name and residential area written down
Need Minutemen gear for the weekend?
Maroon in the stands is the easy way to look like you have done this before. Buying before you travel is cheaper than buying at the stadium.
Where to eat in Amherst and the valley
Parents who write off western Massachusetts as “not Boston” are making a mistake. Amherst, Northampton and the surrounding towns are a genuinely interesting cluster, and a Family Weekend is enough time to see two of them.
Amherst center
A 10-minute walk from campus, with a walkable main street of restaurants, coffee shops and independent retail. Judie’s Restaurant on North Pleasant Street has been a local institution for over 40 years. The Amherst Brewing Company downtown does a full menu alongside its own beers.
Northampton
Ten minutes west on Route 9, and remarkable for its size. It has the independent retail, restaurants and arts programming of a city twice as large. Spoleto on Main Street is a reliable choice for a dinner that feels like an occasion, and the Calvin Theatre is worth checking for programming on your dates.
Hadley
Route 9 east is where the practical errands live. Target, Walmart, Best Buy and the rest cluster here. If your student texts you a list, Hadley is the answer.
Restaurant hours change, and Family Weekend fills the good tables. Book Friday and Saturday dinner before you travel. UMass links the Amherst downtown directory and Explore Western Mass for current listings.
October weather and what to pack
Early October in the Pioneer Valley is peak foliage season, which is exactly why it is beautiful and exactly why the hotels are full. Expect a real swing between a cool morning campus tour and a warm afternoon, and a sharper drop after sunset if the kickoff lands late. Layers, a rain shell and comfortable shoes cover almost every version of the weekend. Check the forecast the week of, not the month of.
Frequently asked questions
When is UMass Parents Weekend 2026?
UMass Amherst Family Weekend 2026 is October 2 to 4, 2026. UMass publishes the dates on its official Family Weekend page. Most families search for it as “parents weekend,” but the university’s own name for it is Family Weekend.
Do I have to register, and what does it cost?
Yes. UMass states the Family Weekend registration fee is $40 per person, and children under 12 are $10 per person. The fee is non-refundable, and UMass adds a late registration fee starting September 15. Students do not need to be registered with their families.
Is there a football game during UMass Family Weekend?
Yes. UMass hosts Eastern Michigan at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and UMass Athletics labels that game Family Weekend on its own schedule. The kickoff time was still listed as TBD in early September, so confirm it before booking travel.
Is Family Weekend the same as Homecoming?
No. Homecoming 2026 is the following Saturday, October 10, when UMass hosts Miami (OH). They are separate weekends with separate crowds, and both compete for the same hotel rooms.
Which airport should I fly into?
Bradley International (BDL), about 35 miles south near Hartford, is the practical choice for most families. Boston Logan is about 90 miles east with more flight options but meaningfully more drive time, especially on a fall weekend.
Where should I stay if Amherst is sold out?
Hadley has most of the chain hotels a few minutes east on Route 9. Northampton is about 10 minutes west and has the best evening options. Holyoke adds inventory to the south, and Springfield, about 25 miles down I-91, is the overflow market when the valley is full.
When should I book a hotel?
As early as you can. Amherst has limited rooms for a town its size, and Family Weekend lands on a home football Saturday during peak foliage season. That is three sources of demand on one small market.
