What is the one thing every University of Missouri parent needs to know before move-in?
The University of Missouri in Columbia occupies a campus that spreads from the Columns on Francis Quadrangle through a dense residential and academic footprint into a college town that exists almost entirely to serve the university community. Columbia, Missouri, is not a large city.
It is a very good college town, meaning that every restaurant, bookshop, coffee house, and bar within two miles of campus is oriented around student and faculty life. Everything is walkable from campus.
The Missouri School of Journalism is not merely well-regarded. It is the oldest journalism school in the world, founded in 1908, and it operates on a teaching hospital model: students produce actual journalism for actual audiences from their first semester. KOMU-TV is the only university-owned commercial TV station in the country.

What makes University of Missouri’s campus culture unique?
“M-I-Z” is the first half of the call-and-response. “Z-O-U” is the second. Your student will learn this within hours of arriving on campus, and they will use it for the rest of their lives.
The Columns on Francis Quadrangle are the campus landmark, six Greek Revival columns that survived the fire that destroyed Academic Hall in 1892. The tradition is to walk through them only twice: entering as a freshman and graduating as a senior.
Getting to Columbia
Columbia Regional Airport (COU) is 10 minutes from campus. St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) is the primary gateway for most Mizzou families, about 2 hours east on I-70. I-70 is the spine of Missouri east-west travel and runs directly through Columbia.
What do parents need to know about University of Missouri move-in day 2026?
Mizzou’s fall move-in is in late August. Columbia in August is warm and humid: 88 to 95 degrees, heavy air, occasional afternoon thunderstorms. The university runs a well-organized move-in with student volunteers, designated unloading zones, and hand trucks available to borrow.
The Residence Halls: Where Your Student Might Live
Mizzou requires freshmen to live on campus. Mark Twain Hall is one of the larger freshman residential buildings, a high-rise on the east side of campus. Schurz Hall and Hubbell Hall are traditional-style halls in the eastern residential cluster. Gateway Hall is a newer residential building with a suite-style configuration.

Columbia: What Parents Need to Know
Broadway is the main student and parent strip. Shakespeare’s Pizza at 225 South Ninth Street is the single most important Columbia dining institution: a pizza-by-the-slice operation that has been feeding Mizzou students since 1973. Flat Branch Pub and Brewing is the most respected of Columbia’s craft brewing operations. CC’s City Broiler is the special occasion dinner in Columbia.
When is University of Missouri Family Weekend 2026 and how do parents plan for it?
University of Missouri Family Weekend 2026 is October 23 to 25, 2026.
Mizzou calls it Family Weekend.
Confirm the schedule and registration on the official family weekend page, and reconfirm the date before booking travel in case it changes. Hotels near campus sell out early, so book as soon as dates are confirmed.

University of Missouri refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
Any credit generated by dropping classes is applied first to any outstanding balance owed to the Cashiers Office (fees, prior charges, etc.) before a refund check is issued, so a family expecting a cash refund may see it partially or fully absorbed by an existing account balance instead.
Refund schedule: Mizzou calls this a fee reassessment rather than a refund. Three tiers for a standard full length session: 100% before the first day of classes/during the add period, 50% through the deadline to drop without a grade, 25% up to the halfway point of the class’s duration, then 0% after that. Non-standard part-of-term courses are calculated against that specific course’s own dates rather than fixed calendar dates.. Confirmed via the official University of Missouri refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.

Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.
GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.
Freshmen may bring a car to University of Missouri with a paid residential permit.
Mizzou’s own page states plainly that all undergrads can purchase a permit. Housing residents get priority placement in their neighborhood’s lots over commuter students, and purchase windows are staggered by residence hall assignment.
Freshman permit cost: $156/semester (Tier 2) or $104/semester (Tier 3) for 2026-27, depending on which residential neighborhood a freshman is assigned to. Confirmed via the official University of Missouri parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.
Mizzou’s Family Weekend is in October. The SEC home football schedule means Family Weekend almost always coincides with a home game at Faurot Field (Memorial Stadium), which seats about 62,000.
How can parents support their University of Missouri student’s mental health?
Mizzou’s Counseling Center provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and psychiatric referrals for enrolled students. Crisis line: 988.

What is University of Missouri’s graduation rate?
University of Missouri graduates 55.7% of students in four years; another 19.2 points finish within six. About 92.7% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.
6.7 pts above national
10.9 pts above national
11.7 pts above national
Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
