UNR’s athletic teams are the Wolf Pack, competing in the Mountain West Conference. The colors are navy blue and silver. “Go Pack!” is the call. The Wolf Pack competes against UNLV (the Nevada rivals, 450 miles south in Las Vegas) in a rivalry that carries genuine statewide significance.

Lake Tahoe is 32 miles west of Reno via Mount Rose Highway or I-80 through Truckee. Confirm the schedule and registration on the official family weekend page. Hotels near campus sell out early, so book as soon as dates are confirmed.
UNR refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
The 100% window applies only to individual class drops, not a full withdrawal, so a parent whose student is withdrawing entirely should plan around the later, lower-value 50% deadline, and refunds beyond that require an appeal to the Student Refund Appeals Board for documented circumstances like illness or military induction.
Refund schedule: Two tiers keyed to the academic calendar (dates shift each term). Individual class drops get a 100% refund through roughly the first week of the term. If completely withdrawing from the university, the deadline for a 50% refund is about a month into the term. No refund after that date except by appeal.. UNR’s Academic Strengths

Nevada, Reno closes most residence halls over winter break, December 17 to January 14. Break housing is available only by special circumstance and costs a flat fee of about $689.
Plan on your student leaving unless they qualify and pay for break housing. One quirk to note: UNR holds its fall commencement December 5, before finals week, so graduation does not follow finals the way it does at most schools.
