The University of Nevada Las Vegas is a public research university with approximately 30,000 students, located 1.5 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip in the Thomas and Mack area of the city. The Mojave Desert surrounds it. The neon-lit casino hotels of the Strip are visible from campus.
Red Rock Canyon is 15 miles west. The Grand Canyon is 4 hours east. Las Vegas is the most visited city in the United States, hosting over 40 million visitors per year, and the economy that supports that tourism employs hundreds of thousands of people in hospitality, entertainment, food and beverage, and the service industries that UNLV’s professional programs are specifically designed to train.
UNLV’s Harrah College of Hospitality is one of the most directly relevant professional programs in America: it is a hospitality college literally in the world’s hospitality capital, and the internship, practicum, and employment connections to the Strip’s major operators (MGM, Caesars, Wynn, Las Vegas Sands, Station Casinos) are immediate and real. Students in the hospitality program can walk across the street and apply for positions at properties that are teaching case studies at other universities. This is not a metaphor. It is a practical daily reality.
Las Vegas is also a real city that is rapidly diversifying beyond gambling and tourism. The Raiders (NFL) and Golden Knights (NHL) have established professional sports franchises that add to the city’s cultural infrastructure. Getting to and from Las Vegas by air is rarely a logistical challenge.
For families driving, I-15 connects Las Vegas to Los Angeles (4 hours west) and Salt Lake City (5 hours north). US-93 runs north to the Nevada-Arizona border and south toward Phoenix. The Las Vegas highway network is expansive and well-maintained in the urban area, and the campus is accessible from I-515/US-95 via Flamingo Road or Tropicana Avenue.
What do parents need to know about UNLV move-in day 2026?
UNLV’s fall move-in runs in mid-to-late August, with specific dates and arrival windows assigned by residence hall. Check housing.unlv.edu for your student’s exact window.
Las Vegas in mid-August is extremely hot: temperatures regularly exceed 105 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and the Mojave Desert heat is dry, intense, and physically demanding in ways that are genuinely different from humid heat. Move-in in Las Vegas August heat is one of the most physically challenging of any university in the country.
UNLV runs organized move-in with student volunteer crews, but the heat requires specific preparation.
Practical notes:
- Nevada desert heat requires preparation that families from other climates do not instinctively apply. Cold water, sunscreen, a hat, and moving in stages with indoor rest breaks are essential.
- Start as early in the morning as possible. By noon, outdoor activity in Las Vegas August is uncomfortable even for experienced desert dwellers. Before 9 AM is strongly recommended.

Las Vegas: What Parents Need to Know
The Las Vegas context for parent visits is unlike any other university in the country, and families visiting their UNLV student have access to a set of experiences and attractions that are genuinely unique.
The Las Vegas Strip is 1.5 miles west of campus, and while the casino culture is not the academic context of UNLV, the entertainment, culinary, and hospitality infrastructure of the Strip is directly connected to what UNLV’s hospitality program teaches and produces. For parent visit dining in and near Las Vegas: The Cosmopolitan’s restaurant corridor (Zuma, Nobu, Momofuku, The Wicked Spoon buffet), Lotus of Siam on E. Sahara (widely cited as one of the best Thai restaurants in America, off-Strip, a serious food destination), Casa di Amore (family-style Italian, east of campus, a Las Vegas institution), and the various restaurant halls at Station Casinos (Red Rock Casino, 15 minutes west) for more casual and affordable dining away from Strip pricing.
When is UNLV Family Weekend 2026 and how do parents plan for it?
UNLV has not yet published its 2026 Family Weekend date.
Check the official UNLV parents and families page for the announcement. Most schools post fall dates by late spring or early summer, so check back. If you may travel, booking a refundable hotel now protects you, since rooms near campus sell out fast once the date is set.

UNLV refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
The 50% mid-term refund is only available if the student’s account is paid in full at the time of withdrawal, and all withdrawals must be filed officially through the Office of the Registrar (not simply stopping attendance) for any refund percentage to apply.
Refund schedule: UNLV publishes two key cutoff dates each term for a total withdrawal (dropping all classes): a 100% refund of tuition and fees if withdrawal is processed through roughly the end of the first week of classes, and a 50% refund if withdrawal is processed by about the sixth week of instruction. There is no refund at all for a total withdrawal after that sixth-week date.. Confirmed via the official UNLV refund policy page.
