University of Texas at Austin Packing List for Parents (2026)
Packing for UT Austin has one rule that changes everything: the university puts a MicroFridge, a small fridge with a microwave built in, in every traditional dorm room. Do not buy a fridge or a microwave, because both are prohibited and there is no space for them. UT Austin dorm rules that change your packing list
Read this before you buy anything. These UT Housing and Fire Marshal policies decide what belongs on the list.
- A MicroFridge is provided in every room. Do not bring a personal fridge or microwave; both are prohibited and there is no room for them.
- Beds are extra-long twin (Twin XL). Standard twin sheets will not fit, so buy Twin XL bedding.
- Air conditioning is provided in all residence halls, so you do not need a large fan.
- Open-coil appliances are banned by the University Fire Marshal. That covers air fryers, toasters, toaster ovens, rice cookers, crock pots, hot plates, and electric grills. Leave all of them home.
- Electric kettles with a fully enclosed element are allowed, and so are coffee makers. The open-coil ban does not apply to modern sealed kettles.
- Extension cords are not allowed. Use a UL-listed surge-protected strip only, no basic cords or cube taps.
- Ethernet is strongly recommended. Campus WiFi slows during peak hours, so pack a cable.
