Logan and Cache Valley provide a college town experience in one of the most beautiful agricultural valleys in the Mountain West, with excellent outdoor recreation access in every direction.
Logan Canyon begins at the eastern edge of the city, where US-89 enters a spectacular limestone canyon cutting through the Bear River Range to Bear Lake 30 miles northeast. The canyon has campgrounds, hiking trails, fly fishing on the Logan River, and the stunning Jardine Juniper Trail (one of the oldest living trees in the state) accessible within 30 minutes of campus. Fall color in Logan Canyon (mid-to-late September through mid-October) is among the most celebrated in Northern Utah, with the maple and oak slopes along the canyon walls turning brilliant red and orange.
Bear Lake on the Utah-Idaho border at the top of Logan Canyon is a turquoise-blue lake caused by light refraction in the glacially clear water, sometimes called the Caribbean of the Rockies. Utah State has a single cutoff date for a tuition refund if a student withdraws.
Most families only see the hard 100 percent to 0 percent cliff at the Add/Drop deadline, so the real safety net is the Tuition Reversal Request petition (filed with the Registrar’s Office, documented extenuating circumstance required, decision appealable once), which is the only path to a partial refund after that date.
Refund schedule: Automatic refund is all or nothing at the Add/Drop deadline (roughly the end of week 2 to 3, exact date set each semester): 100% tuition reversal through that date, 0% after it for a standard withdrawal. A separate declining scale exists only for students who file a Tuition Reversal Request petition citing an extenuating circumstance, running from 100% early in the course down to 0% after about 60% of the course has elapsed, if the petition is approved.. This is not a problem statement, many students find the community values positive, but it is a social context worth naming before arrival.
The winter months in Cache Valley (November through March) can produce an inversion event in which cold air is trapped in the valley under warmer air above, creating poor air quality and gray skies for extended periods.
