Vassar College was founded in 1861 in Poughkeepsie, New York, by Matthew Vassar, a Poughkeepsie brewer and businessman, as the first of the Seven Sisters women’s colleges founded in the northeastern United States between 1861 and 1889.

Vassar refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
The refund clock does not start when a student stops attending, it starts when the Office of the Dean of Studies receives written notice of withdrawal, so delaying the paperwork directly costs the family money on this declining scale.
Refund schedule: Prior to the first day of classes: 100% refund (less the nonrefundable $500 enrollment deposit). Week 1: 80%, declining by 10 percentage points roughly each week through week 7 (20%), then 10% in weeks 8 and 9, and no refund after the ninth week of the semester.
