A Note on Rams Identity and Financial Aid
VCU’s athletic teams are the Rams, competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference at the Division I level. The colors are black and gold. VCU men’s basketball is the most nationally recognized athletic program, with a Final Four appearance (2011) under coach Shaka Smart and a HAVOC defensive system that attracted national attention.

RIC’s connections through Charlotte, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Washington DC provide access to most US markets.
Washington DC’s Reagan National (DCA) is approximately 110 miles north of Richmond via I-95, and Dulles (IAD) is approximately 110 miles north-northwest, with both providing substantially broader national and international connections for families who prefer the Washington routing and are willing to drive.
Amtrak’s Northeast Regional and Carolinian trains serve Richmond’s Main Street Station (approximately 2 miles from the VCU Monroe Park Campus) with multiple daily trains north to Washington, Philadelphia, New York, and south to the Carolinas.

Richmond is one of the most underrated cities in the American South for its combination of historical depth, contemporary culinary culture, arts scene, and James River outdoor access, and the VCU parent visit takes place in this rich urban context.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Boulevard, Richmond, free general admission) is one of the most significant art museums in the Southeast, with a collection of more than 50,000 objects and particular strength in European art, American art, African art, and decorative arts. The VMFA is the primary art museum destination in the state and is 10 minutes from the VCU campus.
The Fan District surrounding the Monroe Park Campus is one of the most architecturally distinguished residential neighborhoods in Virginia, with late-19th-century rowhouses, the Carytown commercial corridor, and the restaurants along Park Avenue and Grove Avenue that make the VCU neighborhood one of the most walkable in the city.
The James River flows through Richmond 2 miles south of the Monroe Park Campus, and the James River Parks system provides rapids kayaking and canoeing (including class III-IV rapids within the city limits, one of the most unusual urban whitewater experiences in the eastern United States), hiking, and the Belle Isle park on the river. VCU refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
Separate from the tuition refund schedule, any student who withdraws before completing 60% of the semester (measured in calendar days) must repay all or a portion of any federal Title IV financial aid already disbursed to their account.
Refund schedule: For fall and spring semesters: dropping before the first day of classes or during the first week of the term refunds 100% of tuition and the university fee, withdrawing in week 2 refunds 80%, week 3 refunds 60%, week 4 refunds 40%, and after week 4 there is no refund. VCU closes its traditional first-year halls over winter break but keeps upper-division and apartment-style halls open. Closing halls include Brandt, Gladding, GRC III, Honors College, and Rhoads; students there must be out within 24 hours of their last final. Whether your student has to leave depends on which hall they live in. First-year students in the closing halls need a plan for break; those in apartment-style housing can usually stay.
