What is the one thing every Washington State University parent needs to know before move-in?
Washington State University move-in is New student move-in is Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16, 2026.
Fall 2026 classes begin Monday, August 24, 2026.
Early arrival starts Thursday, August 13 for a nightly fee. Classes begin Monday, August 24. WSU has no standalone fall break.
Verified against the official housing and academic calendar pages in July 2026. Move-in times are usually assigned individually, so confirm your student’s slot before booking travel.
Washington State University sits in Pullman, a small city in the Palouse region of southeastern Washington, in the rolling wheat fields near the Idaho border. It is not near Seattle (280 miles west). It is not near Spokane (80 miles northwest).
It is its own place, and the isolation is central to what makes the WSU experience distinctive.
The Palouse is one of the most visually striking agricultural landscapes in the United States: rolling hills of wheat and lentil crops that curve and fold against each other in a way that photographers and landscape painters have been attempting to capture for generations. The campus sits in and around these hills, with a downtown Pullman (a genuine, compact small city) immediately adjacent. The Moscow Mountain range is visible to the southeast. Moscow, Idaho, and the University of Idaho are 8 miles east, creating a two-university college town dynamic that gives students access to twice the social and cultural resources of either university alone.
The remoteness is not a bug. It creates the kind of residential campus community that is impossible to sustain in a city: everyone is there because they chose to be there, the social world is primarily the campus, and the bonds that form in Pullman tend to be lasting ones. The Apple Cup rivalry with UW, the tailgate culture at Martin Stadium, and the Cougar football culture are all amplified by the fact that this community is genuinely self-contained.
For parents: Pullman requires planning to visit. It is not a casual weekend trip from most cities. But the visits that families make are, consistently, ones they remember.

What makes Washington State University’s campus culture unique?
“Go Cougs” is the call. It is used everywhere, at all times, by all Cougars, including in airports, in business meetings, on LinkedIn connections when a WSU alum discovers another one.
The Cougar alumni network operates with the loyalty characteristic of students who spent four years in a place they genuinely loved and that was genuinely their own.
The Apple Cup is the annual football game between WSU and UW (the Huskies). It is one of the oldest and most contested rivalries in the Pacific Northwest, and Cougar students prepare for it with an intensity that is worth knowing about before your student arrives. The colors are crimson and gray. The Cougar mascot is Butch T. Cougar.
WSU is the land-grant university of Washington State, which shapes the agricultural, veterinary, and natural resource programs that are genuinely exceptional here. The College of Veterinary Medicine is consistently ranked among the top five programs in the country. The agriculture and viticulture programs benefit from WSU’s position in the heart of Washington’s wine country and wheat-growing economy.
Getting to Pullman
Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport (PUW) is 5 miles from campus, which is ideal when service cooperates. Alaska Airlines connects PUW to Seattle daily, and the flight is about 50 minutes. This is the best option for families from the Seattle area or connecting through Seattle.
For families from other cities without PUW connections, the routing often requires a Seattle connection.
Spokane International Airport (GEG) is 80 miles northwest on US-195, about 90 minutes by car. GEG has broader connectivity than PUW, with service on Alaska, Delta, Southwest, and United from most major western cities. Rental car from GEG is the standard approach for families whose origin cities have better GEG connections than PUW.
US-195 (Pullman to Spokane) and SR-26 (Pullman west toward the Tri-Cities and I-82) are the primary highway approaches. The Palouse region is scenic driving in good conditions. Winter driving on US-195, particularly in November through February, can involve significant snow and ice. Build extra time into any winter visit and check road conditions.
What do parents need to know about Washington State University move-in day 2026?
WSU’s fall move-in runs in late August, with specific dates and arrival windows assigned by residence hall. Check housing.wsu.edu for your student’s exact window. Pullman in late August is warm and dry, characteristically Palouse late summer, with temperatures in the low to mid-80s and low humidity that makes physical work manageable.
The campus is hilly in places, particularly around the residence halls on the College Hill area. Student crews assist with unloading.
Practical notes for the day:
- Pullman hotel inventory is very limited. Book your arrival night hotel as soon as move-in dates are announced. The Cougar Hotel on campus and the limited supply of Pullman-area hotels fill quickly.
- Know your student’s specific hall before arriving. The residence hall clusters are spread across a hilly campus.
- Ship boxes ahead. The Pullman logistics are significant enough that minimizing car weight makes a real difference.
- After unloading, Grand Avenue is Pullman’s main commercial strip. The Coug (formally Cougar Country Drive-In) on Grand Avenue is the local institution: milkshakes, burgers, Pullman-specific fast food that every WSU student knows. Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe on campus is another essential stop.
The Residence Halls: Where Your Student Might Live
WSU requires freshmen to live on campus, and the residential areas are spread across a campus with significant topographic variation.
Orton Hall and Stimson Hall are in the main residential cluster on College Hill, traditional-style halls with community bathrooms and strong first-year social cultures. These are among the most centrally located freshman assignments.
Stephenson Complex is the largest residential area on campus, a cluster of residence halls including Stephenson North, East, West, and South, organized around a central dining facility (Stephenson Dining). It is one of the primary freshman residential areas and has a well-developed community culture.
Streit-Perham Hall is one of the freshman assignments in the College Hill cluster, a traditional-style hall with a more intimate community size than Stephenson.
Waller Hall and McEachern Hall are additional freshman halls in the residential complex, often assigned to students in the Honors College or specific living-learning communities.
Global Scholars Hall is a living-learning community for students with international backgrounds or interest in international study, open to freshmen and upperclassmen.
After freshman year, many WSU students move to off-campus apartments in Pullman. The rental market in Pullman is dense for the city’s size and relatively affordable compared to most university towns.
How much does Washington State University cost? Tuition, financial aid, and scholarships for 2026-27
WSU provides strong value for Washington State residents, and the Palouse cost of living (housing, food, and transportation are all lower in rural eastern Washington than in most university markets) makes the effective cost of attendance competitive relative to the published figures.
| Expense | In-State | Out-of-State |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and Fees | ~$12,000 (verify at wsu.edu) | ~$28,000 (verify at wsu.edu) |
| Room and Board | ~$13,000-$15,000 (verify at wsu.edu) | ~$13,000-$15,000 (verify at wsu.edu) |
| Books and Supplies | ~$1,100 (verify at wsu.edu) | ~$1,100 (verify at wsu.edu) |
| Personal and Transportation | ~$2,500 (verify at wsu.edu) | ~$2,500 (verify at wsu.edu) |
| Estimated Total | ~$28,600-$30,600 (verify at wsu.edu) | ~$44,600-$46,600 (verify at wsu.edu) |
WSU’s flagship merit scholarship is the Regents Distinguished Scholarship for top incoming students. The Cougar Commitment program provides need-based grants that cover tuition for qualifying Washington State families at certain income levels. The College of Veterinary Medicine, the Carson College of Business, and the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture all administer departmental scholarships.
Out-of-state families from western states should check the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) discount program, which can significantly reduce out-of-state tuition for qualifying students in participating programs.
If there is a gap between available aid and total costs, private student loan rates are worth comparing carefully. SoFi is consistently competitive on rates for families with strong credit. Always exhaust federal loan options first.

Pullman and the Palouse: What Parents Need to Know
Pullman is a small city that functions as a complete community during the academic year, with everything a student needs within walking distance or a short drive. The downtown along Grand Avenue and Olsen Street has the restaurants, coffee shops, and bars that sustain student and parent social life.
For parent visit dining in Pullman: Sella’s Cal-Ital (downtown, the best dinner option in Pullman, Italian-influenced with good pasta and a wine list that reflects WSU’s viticulture program proximity), Valhalla Bar and Grill (downtown, reliable and popular with students and families alike), Swilly’s (Grand Avenue, casual, a Pullman institution), Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe on campus (WSU runs its own dairy and makes its own ice cream and Cougar Gold cheese, which has a national following; bring a tin home).
Moscow, Idaho, 8 miles east: The University of Idaho campus in Moscow gives the two-campus Pullman-Moscow community a surprising amount of cultural depth for rural eastern Washington/Idaho. Lodgepole restaurant in Moscow (farm-to-table, excellent) is one of the better dining options in the region. Third Street in Moscow has additional restaurants and bars.
Walla Walla wine country is 90 miles southwest and is one of the most respected wine regions in the Pacific Northwest, with dozens of tasting rooms concentrated on Main Street. A parent visit that includes a Walla Walla afternoon is a genuinely excellent extension. WSU’s wine science program has close ties to the Walla Walla wine industry.
For winter visits: Pullman winters are cold and can bring significant snow. US-195 can be difficult in winter storms. Plan accordingly.
When is Washington State University Family Weekend 2026 and how do parents plan for it?
Washington State Family Weekend 2026 is October 2 to 4, 2026.
Confirm the schedule and registration on the official family weekend page. Hotels near campus sell out early, so book as soon as dates are confirmed.
Planning the trip? Our WSU Family Weekend travel guide has the football details, Pullman and Moscow lodging, airports, and game day parking.
Washington State refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
On top of the prorated tuition owed, WSU adds a separate flat Term Withdrawal fee of 5% of assessed tuition (capped at $100), and if tuition was paid by credit card the 2.5% card processing fee is never refunded even on an otherwise full refund.
Refund schedule: Full refund only if withdrawn before about the 6th day of classes. After that it declines by roughly two-week bands, moving from full refund through the 80s, 60s, 50s, and 40s percent range over the following two months, and from about week 10 on the full 100% is owed with no refund.. Confirmed via the official Washington State refund policy page. Policies and dates change every term, so verify directly before making a decision.
Advertising disclosure: this is a paid partner link. UniversityParent may earn a commission if you purchase through it.
Most colleges do not refund 100% of tuition once the semester starts.
GradGuard Tuition Insurance can reimburse tuition, housing, and fees if a covered illness, injury, mental health condition, or other covered reason forces a withdrawal during the term. Plans must be purchased before the semester begins.
Freshmen may bring a car to Washington State University with a paid residential permit.
No ban or class-year restriction, but residence hall students (including freshmen) are limited to Blue, Gray, or Crimson permits rather than the full range of campus permits. Gray and Crimson are limited in quantity and sold first-come, first-served.
Freshman permit cost: $188.48/year for the standard Blue permit (2025-26 confirmed rate; 2026-27 was still a projection of up to about $194 at time of research). Confirmed via the official Washington State University parking page. Policies can change year to year, so verify before move-in.
WSU’s Family Weekend is in October, organized through Student Life. Details at studentlife.wsu.edu. The Pac-12/Big 12 football schedule means that Family Weekend often includes a home game at Gesa Field at Martin Stadium, and the tailgate culture in Pullman on game weekends is one of the more fully committed in the Pacific Northwest.
The Apple Cup is typically in November and is the defining athletic event of the Cougar year. Planning a parent visit around Apple Cup in Pullman, when the entire campus community is united in a single shared purpose, is one of the more memorable parent visit experiences available anywhere.
Hotel strategy: Pullman has very limited hotel inventory, period. The Cougar Hotel is the most convenient option and books out the moment game weekends and Family Weekend are announced. Moscow, Idaho (8 miles east) provides some additional options but also books quickly for WSU events. Book any visit overnight as soon as you know your dates.
How can parents support their Washington State University student’s mental health?
WSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and psychiatric referrals for enrolled students. The Palouse isolation factor is worth naming directly: there is no city to escape to, no anonymous crowd, no metropolitan buffer.
This is bonding for many students and challenging for some, particularly in January and February when the Palouse winters are cold and the social world is genuinely contained.
Students who find themselves struggling with the isolation should know that the community is genuinely warm and intentional about making the campus home for everyone. WSU’s community culture, forged in part by the shared remoteness, is one of the things alumni most consistently cite when explaining why they love the place.

WSU’s Academic Strengths
The College of Veterinary Medicine is the academic crown jewel of WSU and one of the top veterinary programs in the country. The program produces practicing veterinarians, veterinary researchers, and public health professionals through a curriculum that integrates the surrounding agricultural landscape as a working laboratory.
Admission is highly competitive (the vet school accepts only a fraction of qualified applicants), and the undergraduate pre-vet track is serious academic preparation.
The Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture has strong programs in civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and computer engineering, with research programs connected to agricultural technology, renewable energy, and the Hanford nuclear site cleanup (one of the largest environmental remediation projects in the country, 60 miles from Pullman). The Carson College of Business produces finance, accounting, hospitality management, and marketing graduates who are active in Pacific Northwest business.
The College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences benefits directly from the Palouse location, with working farmland, food science laboratories, and viticultural research connected to the Washington wine industry. WSU’s Cougar Gold cheese (a cheddar produced by WSU Creamery) has won national awards and is sold through Ferdinand’s; it is one of the more unusual and genuinely excellent academic-program byproducts at any American university.
The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, named for the WSU alumnus who defined American broadcast journalism in the 20th century, produces journalism and communications graduates with a strong professional legacy attached to the name.
Getting Your Student’s Stuff Home Between Semesters
Pullman’s remoteness makes the end-of-semester logistics genuine: for out-of-state students, moving belongings from the Palouse to home and back is a significant logistics challenge that most families underestimate the first time.
Storage Scholars specializes in student storage with residence hall pickup and delivery, so your student does not need to arrange transportation from Pullman to a storage facility independently. Worth knowing before the first semester ends.

You Are a Cougar Family Now
Pullman is one of those places that reveals itself slowly. The remoteness that seemed like a limitation turns out to be the thing that creates the community.
The wheat fields that seemed like just scenery turn out to be the context for programs that are exceptional precisely because they are here, in the Palouse, where the wheat actually grows and the cows actually produce the milk that makes the cheese that has a national following.
Your student chose a place. Not a city attached to a campus, not a credential factory, but a place, with a landscape and a culture and a set of traditions that exist because a community of 28,000 people chose to build them in the middle of the Palouse.
Go Cougs.

What is Washington State University’s graduation rate?
Washington State University graduates 41.3% of students in four years; another 19.2 points finish within six. About 78.3% of first-year students return for sophomore year. Each bar is compared to the national average, marked by the vertical line.
7.7 pts below national
3.5 pts below national
2.7 pts below national
Here is how to read these numbers: the four-year and six-year rates show how many students finish on time and eventually, and retention shows how many return after the first year. Wherever your student lands, the habits that keep them on track matter most: a full, well-sequenced course load, an advisor meeting every term, and using campus support early. See why most students don’t graduate in four years and how to choose the right classes in the right order.
