Wesleyan University was founded in 1831 in Middletown, Connecticut, as a Methodist institution providing liberal arts education, and it has spent the intervening 195 years evolving from its religious founding into a secular research university that is, by any meaningful measure, one of the most intellectually and culturally vibrant liberal arts universities in the United States. Wesleyan is part of the “Little Three” (with Williams and Amherst), is a member of the Twelve College Exchange (with Amherst, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Trinity, Vassar, Wheaton, and Williams), and is consistently one of the most selective liberal arts institutions in New England.
Wesleyan operates an open curriculum, with no distributional requirements for graduation beyond the 32 courses that comprise the degree and the completion of a major or double major. The Wesleyan open curriculum has a more explicitly research-oriented character than the Brown or Amherst models: Wesleyan has invested in combining undergraduate research access with the curricular freedom that open curriculum provides, and the Center for the Arts, the College of Film and the Moving Image, the Wesleyan Science Center, and the Wesleyan Social Sciences program all reflect an institution that takes seriously the proposition that undergraduates should have access to research-level resources and inquiry.

Wesleyan’s athletic teams are the Cardinals, competing in NESCAC at the Division III level. The color is cardinal red and black. Getting to Middletown
Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, approximately 30 minutes north of Middletown via I-91, is served by American, Delta, United, Southwest, and JetBlue from major northeastern and national markets. BDL is the most convenient air gateway.
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City is approximately 100 minutes south of Middletown via I-95 and CT-9. LaGuardia (LGA) is approximately 90 minutes. The New York metro area airports provide comprehensive domestic and international connections for families who prefer the New York routing.
Hartford’s Union Station is served by Amtrak (Northeast Regional, connecting to New York and Boston) with a 20-minute drive from Middletown. The CT Rail (Hartford Line, Shore Line East) provides additional regional connections.

Middletown and Central Connecticut: What Parents Need to Know
Middletown is a small city of approximately 47,000 people on the Connecticut River, with a historic downtown on Main Street that serves both the university and the surrounding community. The Wesleyan campus is directly adjacent to the south end of Main Street, making the downtown walkable from campus.
Main Street in Middletown has undergone significant reinvestment and offers a range of independent restaurants, the Real Art Ways gallery and media arts center (a nationally recognized non-commercial arts venue that hosts film, visual art, and performance), and the Wesleyan-connected arts spaces that make Middletown a more culturally active small city than its size would predict.

Wesleyan refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
Refunds are not automatic: the student (not a parent) must submit a Credit Balance Withdrawal Request form, and the Student Activity Fee and Matriculation Fee are non-refundable once classes begin regardless of the tuition refund tier.
Refund schedule: 100% tuition and fees through about the first week, 90% of tuition only for the following week, then declining through 75%, 50%, and 25% over the next three weeks, with no refund after about week 5.. Wesleyan’s Academic Strengths
The College of Film and the Moving Image (CFILM) is one of the oldest and most respected undergraduate film programs in the country, with courses in production, theory, and history and a Wesleyan Cinema Archives that holds more than 10,000 prints of films from the earliest years of cinema through the contemporary.
The film alumni network (Joss Whedon, Lin-Manuel Miranda as arts and performance alumni more broadly) provides professional connections across the entertainment industry.
The sciences at Wesleyan are organized around the Wesleyan Science Center and include strong programs in biology, chemistry, physics, earth and environmental sciences, and the neuroscience and behavior major (which combines biology, psychology, and neuroscience in an interdisciplinary program that reflects Wesleyan’s investment in research-oriented undergraduate education).
