I-64 connects Williamsburg to Richmond in the west and Norfolk/Virginia Beach in the east. Colonial Williamsburg is the largest living history museum in the United States, and it is immediately adjacent to the campus. Walking from the Wren Building along Duke of Gloucester Street into the historic area is a direct transition. The Raleigh Tavern, the Governor’s Palace, the Bruton Parish Church, and the Capitol building are all within a 15-minute walk of the campus. W&M students have a complex relationship with the tourist town on their doorstep, but parent visits are ideally positioned to enjoy it.
Jamestown and Yorktown are 8 miles away in each direction along the Colonial Parkway, completing the “Historic Triangle.” Jamestown Settlement and the Jamestown National Historic Site cover the 1607 English settlement. Confirm the schedule and registration on the official William & Mary family weekend page. Most schools open registration in August and hotel rooms near campus sell out fast, so book as soon as the dates are confirmed.
William and Mary refunds tuition on a declining schedule after the semester starts, so timing a withdrawal matters.
A student required to withdraw by the university, rather than withdrawing voluntarily, is not eligible for any tuition or fee refund at all, and William and Mary separately warns families to contact Financial Aid before withdrawing since Title IV federal aid is returned under its own calculation that can claw back aid independent of the tuition refund percentage.
Refund schedule: For full time students withdrawing in a Fall or Spring semester, the refund is set by which school week the withdrawal falls in: 100% in week 1, then declining through 80%, 70%, 60%, and 50% over the following four weeks, and 40% in week 6, with no refund after week 6. A W&M football game with tailgating adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg is genuinely distinctive.
