Washington State University Family Weekend 2026: A Parent’s Guide to Pullman
Fall Family Weekend at Washington State University is October 2 to 4, 2026 in Pullman, and it lands on a Saturday night home football game against Fresno State. Pullman is a small town with a small hotel market, so lodging is the first thing to settle.

Start with lodging
Pullman is a town of roughly 30,000 people with a correspondingly small hotel market, and Family Weekend falls on a home football Saturday. Settle where you are sleeping before you book anything else.
WSU Family Weekend 2026 dates
Washington State University fall Family Weekend is October 2 to 4, 2026, in Pullman, Washington. Spring Family Weekend is April 2 to 4, 2027.
WSU Pullman runs two family weekends every academic year, one each semester. Both are published on the university official Family Weekends page.
WSU describes the structure plainly: the university hosts two family weekends each academic year, one in the fall and one in the spring, formerly known as Dad’s and Mom’s Weekends. If you are searching for WSU Parents Weekend, Dad’s Weekend, or Mom’s Weekend, this is the event you want. The current name is Family Weekend.
One point of confusion worth clearing up first. Washington State University is in Pullman, in the southeast corner of the state, about 285 miles and four and a half hours from Seattle. It is a different university from the University of Washington. If a search result sends you toward Seattle lodging, it is the wrong school.
Two schools compete for rooms on this weekend. Nine miles away in Moscow, Idaho, the University of Idaho hosts Montana State at the Kibbie Dome on Friday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m. Moscow is the usual overflow market when Pullman fills, so on the Friday night of WSU Family Weekend both towns are working against you at once.
Does WSU Family Weekend require registration?
No. WSU states that no formal RSVP is required for Family Weekend.
In the university’s own words: “No formal RSVP is required for Family Weekend. You are welcome to come when it works for you and participate in what interests you and your Coug.”
There is no registration fee, no sign-up form, and no check-in desk you must clear before the weekend counts. You show up and pick what you want to do.
That applies to the weekend itself, not to everything inside it. The football game is a separate, ticketed event sold through WSU Athletics, and it is the one thing most families need to buy in advance. Other activities can carry their own arrangements depending on what WSU and student groups schedule.
WSU also says that events for Family Weekends are added and updated frequently. Treat the official page as a live document rather than a fixed program, and check it again in the week before you travel.
The university Family Weekends page is the only authoritative source for what is actually happening. It is where new events appear first.
The Family Weekend football game
Washington State hosts Fresno State at Gesa Field on Saturday, October 3, 2026. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. Pacific, on USA Network.
WSU Athletics labels this game Family Weekend on its official schedule, and the schedule entry links directly to the university Family Weekend page.
This is not an inference from the calendar. The athletics department and the family programs office point at each other for this date, and a March 2026 WSU Athletics release states that Family Weekend is scheduled for the October 3 game against Fresno State.
The 6:30 p.m. kickoff shapes the day more than parents expect. Sunset in Pullman on October 3 is about 6:26 p.m., so effectively the entire game is played after dark. Plan Saturday daytime around campus and the town, treat the game as the evening, and read the packing section before you decide what to bring.

Tickets
Start at the WSU Athletics box office. That is the primary market, and it is where your seats will be cheapest if inventory is still available. Family Weekend participation does not include a football ticket.
Buy from WSU first. If the official listing is sold out or the seats left are not workable for your group, a resale marketplace is the fallback rather than the starting point, and prices there move with demand.
Stadium rules that catch parents out
The clear bag limit is 14 by 8 by 14
WSU permits clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags not exceeding 14 by 8 by 14 inches, one-gallon clear resealable bags, and small clutches no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Note that this is not the 12 by 12 by 6 rule used at many other stadiums, so a bag that worked elsewhere may not work here.
Gates open two hours before kickoff
For a 6:30 p.m. kickoff that is 4:30 p.m. Arrive earlier than that if you are parking on campus.
You cannot leave and come back
Re-entry is not permitted at Gesa Field once your ticket has been scanned. Sort out food, layers, and anything left in the car before you go in.
Umbrellas are not allowed
Umbrellas are on the prohibited list, along with coolers, outside food and drink, hard-sided bags, and noisemakers. In October that makes a rain shell the practical choice.

Family Weekend is not Homecoming
These are two different weekends three weeks apart. Family Weekend is October 2 to 4 with the Fresno State game. Homecoming is October 24 with the Boise State game.
This is worth checking before you book, because Homecoming coverage dominates search results in October and it is easy to buy the wrong flight.

Where to stay for WSU Family Weekend

The honest picture: Pullman has a small hotel market, and the realistic alternatives are all a drive rather than a walk. Here is every option worth considering, with drive times measured to Gesa Field.

Book refundable, then relax
Reserve something cancellable now and keep looking. On a weekend with two home football games nine miles apart, having a room you can walk away from is worth more than holding out for the perfect one.

Airports and getting to Pullman
Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport is closest, about 3 miles from campus, but Alaska Airlines is the only carrier and it flies nonstop only to Seattle and Boise. Spokane International is 79 miles and about 90 minutes away with far more routes.
This is the single biggest planning difference between WSU and a big-city campus. The convenient airport is genuinely tiny, so the right answer depends entirely on where you are flying from.

PUW is served by Alaska Airlines operated by Horizon Air, and on a typical day it handles a handful of departures, all to Seattle or Boise. That means limited recovery options if a flight cancels, which matters more on a Sunday departure than a Friday arrival. Avis, Budget, and Hertz have counters there, and airport parking is $10 per day. From Spokane, US-195 south is the standard route; WSU suggests Highway 27, which becomes Grand Avenue in Pullman, when US-195 backs up.
With a 6:30 p.m. Saturday kickoff, the game will not end until roughly 10 p.m. If you booked an early Sunday flight out of Spokane, you are looking at a 90 minute drive on a short night. A late morning departure is worth the extra hotel hours.
Find flights
Price Pullman and Spokane against each other before you commit. The 90 minute drive from Spokane is often worth it, and sometimes it is not.

Rental cars
A car is effectively required unless you are staying in downtown Pullman and never leaving it. If you are landing in Spokane, it is not optional.

Parking and getting around campus
Do not assume weekend parking is free. WSU states that the lots which normally require no permit after 5 p.m. or on weekends are the exception on campus event weekends like home football games.
That one line is the most expensive thing parents get wrong here. On a normal Saturday much of campus parks free. On October 3 it does not.
Get your permit online, not on arrival
Daily permits are sold same-day at parking.wsu.edu, and hourly parking runs through aimsmobilepay.com or the AMP Park app. Both need a card, not cash.
The Visitor Center is not open Saturday
The Brelsford WSU Visitor Center sells permits in person, but it operates Monday to Friday. If you want a permit over the counter, do it Friday.
Stadium Way closes around the game
WSU establishes a restricted traffic zone on Stadium Way from Grimes Way north to Orchard Drive and Cougar Way, from three hours before kickoff until as much as two hours after. Only emergency, transit, stadium support, and disability-permit vehicles get through.
Accessible parking is space-available
Accessible spaces are offered on a space-available basis in WSU lots on game day for vehicles with valid placards or plates, and a valid game day parking permit is still required. WSU lists 509-335-9684 for accessible parking questions.
Leaving town afterward
Everyone exits at once toward SR-195 and Colfax, and it backs up. WSU publishes alternate exit routes through Albion, Palouse, and Oakesdale precisely for this, and recommends Bishop Boulevard with Highway 195 and Highway 27 to skip downtown congestion. If you are driving to Spokane after a night game, look at the alternates before you sit in the queue.
Buses and walking
Pullman Transit runs city and campus routes, adult cash fare is about a dollar, and it operates a dedicated football service on home game days. As of late August its 2026 football page says maps and other information are coming soon, so check it in the week before you travel rather than planning around last season’s routes.
Campus is walkable but genuinely hilly. Between the stadium, the Compton Union Building, and downtown you will cover real elevation change, so comfortable shoes matter more here than on a flat campus.

The 2026 Family Weekend event schedule
WSU has not yet published the full 2026 Family Weekend event schedule.
As of late August, the university says it is planning events for the fall and that they will start appearing on the official page in early September.
We are not going to invent a program or copy last year’s. Here is what is actually known.
WSU describes its family weekends as carrying “fun activities such as sporting events, concerts, comedians, outdoor and recreation activities, fundraisers, tours, and more.” Many events are student-driven and planning starts at the beginning of each semester, which is why the calendar fills late.
The practical read for a parent booking now: the Saturday evening football game is the fixed point, and everything else fills in around it during September. Book travel against the dates and the kickoff, then choose activities once the schedule appears.
We will update this section once WSU publishes the 2026 events. In the meantime the official page is where they land first.
A suggested weekend plan
This is our editorial suggestion, not an official WSU schedule. Your student will have their own ideas, and that is the point of the weekend, so treat it as a frame rather than a plan.
- Afternoon: Arrive and check in. There is no required check-in for Family Weekend, so your time is your own.
- Before 4:30 p.m.: Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe at the WSU Creamery, home of Cougar Gold cheese. It normally runs Monday to Friday until 4:30 p.m., so Friday is the reliable window.
- Late afternoon: Let your student walk you through their actual routine. The dorm, the dining hall, the building where their hard class meets. This is usually the part parents remember.
- Evening: Dinner downtown. Friday is the better night for a sit-down meal, because Saturday is built around a 6:30 kickoff.
- Morning: A slow breakfast, then whichever Family Weekend events WSU has posted by then.
- Late morning: The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on campus opens at 10 a.m. and is free.
- Midday: Lunch early. Restaurants get busy well before kickoff on a home Saturday.
- 4:30 p.m.: Gates open. Park first, and remember free weekend parking does not apply today.
- 6:30 p.m.: Kickoff, Washington State vs. Fresno State at Gesa Field. Sunset is 6:26 p.m., so bring the layers you would bring to a night game.
- Morning: Brunch. Several Pullman restaurants close on Sunday, so check the list below before you pick.
- Midday: A grocery or supply run with your student is usually more welcome than another meal out.
- Afternoon: Head to PUW, or allow 90 minutes to Spokane plus airport time.

Things to do beyond the game
Family Weekend leaves real gaps, particularly Saturday daytime before a 6:30 kickoff and Sunday morning.
Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
WSU’s art museum on Wilson Road, with a collection of several thousand works. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday, so Saturday morning is your window.
Downtown Pullman
Main Street and Grand Avenue along the South Fork of the Palouse River hold most of the town’s independent restaurants, coffee shops, and stores. Compact enough to cover on foot in an afternoon.
Moscow, Idaho
The University of Idaho town next door, with a larger downtown and a different feel. Easy to fold into a Sunday morning if you are staying on that side.
Kamiak Butte County Park
A forested butte rising out of the wheat country north of Pullman, with a summit trail and long views over the Palouse. The best short hike near town, and early October is a good time for it.
Palouse Discovery Science Center
A hands-on science center in Pullman, useful if you are traveling with a younger child who will not sit through a campus tour.
October weather and what to pack
Pullman averages a high near 59F and a low near 38F in October, with about 1.6 inches of rain across the month. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. and sunset is 6:26 p.m., so plan for the low, not the high.
Those are 1991 to 2020 normals from the weather station at Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport, so they describe a typical October rather than a forecast. Check an actual forecast about five days out and adjust. What does not change is that this is a night game in the first week of October at elevation, and the temperature will be dropping through all four quarters.

- A rain shell, because umbrellas are prohibited in the stadium
- A warm hat and gloves in a bag, even if the afternoon feels mild
- Comfortable shoes for a hilly campus

Spring Family Weekend: April 2 to 4, 2027
WSU has already confirmed spring Family Weekend for April 2 to 4, 2027.
If fall does not work, or if you want to come twice, the spring weekend is a genuinely different trip rather than a repeat.
The most important difference is football. April falls outside the regular season, so spring Family Weekend does not carry the game day logistics that dominate October: no 6:30 p.m. kickoff, no stadium bag policy to plan around, no restricted traffic zone on Stadium Way, and no weekend when campus parking rules flip. That removes most of the hard constraints from the fall trip.
April normals at Pullman-Moscow are a high near 56F and a low near 37F with about 1.8 inches of rain, so slightly cooler and wetter than October, but with much longer evenings. Sunset on April 3, 2027 is about 7:21 p.m.
On lodging, be realistic rather than alarmist. We have no evidence the spring weekend draws football-Saturday demand, so book early for the ordinary reason that Pullman is small, not an urgent one. Do not assume the spring program mirrors the fall one either. WSU builds each weekend separately and posts events as they are planned.
